  1. Rooting against? No. Wanting to see our best players play every game they can? Yes. It isn't my fault that Holland signed a overrated always hurt player. The new trend here is Babcock is doing what he has been saying: The best play regardless of age/contract status/experience etc..... That is something everyone should be excited about!

He's only played 26 games as a Red Wing.....26. Again, he's only played 26 games as a Red Wing. I can't imagine why anyone has written him off after only ~32% of a single season. It's just utter nonsense.

  2. Lol. Is that what you said to begin with?

You went from "Smith had the best offensive stats" to "Smith had the best 5 on 5 stats" and now you're at "Smith had the best 5 on 5 stats per minute played". Just stop. This is a bad joke. You intentionally misrepresented reality in order to validate some preconceived notion you had. Then you got called on it. And now you're scrambling to try and make it look like you were full of b.s. to begin with. But you were. You definitely were.

Yeah, this seems like a worth while argument.

  3. While I agree that this is a problem, I think the bigger problem is in the offensive zone. The team is horrible at puck possession. The most success seemed to come from the rush. The forwards don't cycle particularly well, and the forcheck is almost non existent.

Detroit is 25th for CF%, and 9th for FF%. The team just constantly shoots the puck into defensemen. There's no offensive movement to open things up. Everyone just kind of stands around, loses the puck, and it's time for some more mediocre defense.

  4. The one in 2008 was a different era. I was talking about the first three Cups.

I can see the argument. Wings fans think of him as an above average goalie who was a good whipping boy. In truth, he's a borderline Hall of Famer with two Cups and over 400 wins. He was more than a good goalie.

At the end of the day, though, he'll be more remembered than someone like Holmstrom, who only had two 50 point seasons in his career. For those who never saw him play, people looking back at his stats will think of Ozzie as a good goalie. I doubt people will do the same for Holmstrom.

He was also able to change his playing style from a standup goalie to a hybrid. I think that often gets overlooked.

  5. The Reebok jerseys and the unnecessary, obtrusive stripes have ruined hockey jerseys. One of the worst mistakes the NHL made.

I've said this a million times, but the best jerseys are typically the earlier ones. The teams that decided to drastically change things just to sell more merchandise usually chose a worse design than the one before.

Someone here once told me that people tend to prefer the jerseys that teams wore when that person was younger. That is also true. I prefer the jerseys teams wore in the early 90's when I was a kid. However, looking back at those jerseys, they really were simpler and more memorable.

The NHL needs to get rid of the verticle stripes running down from the armpits, and the idiotic horizontal stripe running below the shoulder and neck. f*** Reebok.

    Do you like anything?

  6. Remember when Flip and Kronwall both signed for 5 years, 3 million/yr? At first they didn't seem like super amazing deals but as time went along they were huge bargains. Wouldn't mind that for Dekeyser simply because of term (maybe even less cap hit), Tatar needs to prove himself more but hoping he gets a Kindl type deal

Tatar just had a better rookie season than Datsyuk....dafuq?

  7. Did we hire Darryl Sutter while I wasn't paying attention? But I digress...

Because I think none of the GM, coach, management, or ownership would prefer to fire someone when they can just let them walk without all the to-do.

I agree, there aren't many repercussions, but why would you (if given the choice) fire someone if you don't have to?

So you're saying the preferred method would be to let him walk? I agree, that would be more amicable. However, you made it sound like it would be some fool-hardy endeavor for Holland to sign Babcock for multiple years, which is not the case. Is it less desirable to fire him? Sure, but no worries if you had to.

  8. I think Holland would be a fool to lock Babs up before seeing how this season plays out. You've got arguably the best coach not currently in the NHL in your back pocket, and you've got a team that's consistently underperforming in the playoffs. Give Babs the year. If the team is healthy and performs well, or if they lose in the playoffs but look strong, then bring him back. But if they miss the playoffs, get bounced early/get embarrassed, then let Babs walk on good terms (which he'd likely want anyway) and go with Blashill. 6 years of early playoff exits would be reason enough to make a change if that is indeed the case a year from now.

Why? You can fire a coach at any time with little repercussion. It's not like his salary goes against the cap.

  9. He was an AHL rookie, and there is absolutely no evidence that "he wanted to play now". That's just something people keep saying. He's far from the first Red Wings player to be expected to play a couple years in the AHL despite being older and having played professionally before.

Also, you're just making things up. He doesn't have "defensive inefficiencies". He was lauded for his "Zetterberg-like" commitment to two-way play.

I'm so tired of people using post-hoc justifications to try and make that trade look like it wasn't a total disaster. He wasn't going back to Europe. He wasn't demanding immediate playing time. He would surely have got a chance to be better than Andersson, Sheahan, Glendening, and/or Helm. And he DEFINITELY isn't bad defensively.

It was s*** trade. That's all.

Is this done yet? Can we please move on? I kind of don't even like this website anymore because of this, Hossa, and Suter circle jerks that constantly get brought up in not some, but ALL of the posts on this site.

  10. Was Holland this high on Datsyuk and Zetterberg? He's implied he will be building our future forward core around Mantha. Everyone is amazed at this kid. The very fact we are seriously discussing whether he will be given a shot without playing minors says something is different about this kid. I doubt he will be better than our top 6 right now, but as soon as an injury hits give him his chance. He may struggle but with our staff it shouldn't stunt his development to be thrown into the heat of battle. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2

I believe Datsyuk was ranked 12th among Detroit's prospects. No one really saw his potential. The fact that he made the team in 2002 was pretty crazy. I think Hull really helped his development and saw his true potential.

  11. Ken Hollands actions lately prove to me that he is/was not the great NHL GM that everyone said he was. He must have been just the face in front of the real brains that have now all left. Nill, Bowman, and Yzerman.

The Quincey signing will go down as one of his worst deals. Better to have done nothing then this. To be rejected by most UFA's is a big sign that the Wings are in big trouble. We are in for a long year(s) ahead

I don't think that's the case at all. I believe what we are witnessing is just how much of an impact player a prime Lidstrom was. We all knew he was good, amazing, one of the best ever. But, he seems to be what made the '00s Red Wings teams into contenders. Every D man that was his partner had career years. I daresay that, even with all the accolades, he may well have been underrated.

  12. I might be way off base, but I'm thinking a guy like Boyle will get nothing more than $4 million per year for 2, or 3 years.

Niskanen on the other hand will get nothing less than $6 million for 7 years.

From what very little I know of Niskanen - he sounds like he could be another 'Rafalski' for the Red Wings - however the real Rafalski was alot more accomplished/experienced, and was regarded a safe bet signing for Holland.

You make a good point regarding Niskanen - however look at Wisnewski, and his signing with the Blue Jackets...Sometimes ya never know.

I don't know if that's entirely true. Rafalski was undrafted and played in Europe for a while. There was talk that his success in NJ was a product of their system, and being able to play with Niedermayer. He did, however, have more than 1 offensively productive season in NJ.

  13. Speaking of Stuart, I wonder if he could be had for cheap, considering the Sharks are rebuilding.

Am I taking crazy pills? Does no one remember how terrible he was the last 1 and half seasons he was here? The dude mailed it in and was one of the worst defenders on the Wings roster. Why does everyone want him back?

  14. Why Not...

    1. Trade Jurco, Andersson, 2014 1st Round Pick (#15) for Ryan Kesler

    2. Trade Dekeyser, Tatar, Marchenko, and 2015 1st + 2016 Cond 2nd for Shea Weber

    3. Sign Boyle

    4. Re-Sign Alfie

    ZETTERBERG - DATSYUK - ALFREDSSON

    FRANZEN - KESLER - MANTHA

    NYQUIST - SHEAHAN - PULKINNEN

    ABDELKADER - HELM - MILLER

    WEBER - KRONWALL

    ERICSSON - BOYLE

    KINDL - SMITH

    HOWARD

Then lets flip Abs and Helm 1st+2nd+3rd+4th+5th+6th for Malkin and Letang
