Apparently, after reading the actual article, Buff used to play D. And he hasn't shown up to work out and keep in shape since winning the cup... I don't know that this is a good idea. His style was always a wannabe-Homer, which loses everything if he's on D.

The east is often much weaker than the West to begin with, stemming from the west being more defensively sound. The east scores a lot though. As for my ideas. I believe Detroit will face Vancouver to make it to the finals, which will be a very good series. Vancouver is definitely shaping up to be a good team, they just need a little extra and they're there. As far as the east, I can see a few teams being a bit surprising, notably, Tampa Bay could very well make the playoffs. I don't believe they'll go too far yet though. I have a feeling from the East, Philly could make another nice run, depending on goaltending, as well as Pitt, or possibly Boston. I don't see the Caps making it. They have a talented team, but they need a coaching change. I don't like making final predictions, but I'd think Detroit beats Vancouver in 6, and takes down Philly in 6 as well.

God, people need to forget the 'too old' thing. Every year we're too old, and every year we do it. Almost as long as I've been a fan of Detroit, we've been too old. Yet we've won more cups in the past 20 years than anyone else. Maybe everyone else is just too young?

He's a good mentor, that's all we need from him now. The guy has always had good hockey sense, but now, its just that his body can't keep up with the game. I'm glad we brought him back, he'll give those kids a few lessons defensively.

Bring Winnipeg, Hartford and Quebec back! And add a team in Seattle. All done, all fixed.

Shanahan - Yzerman - Franzen Hull - Federov - Holmstrom Datsyuk - Zetterberg - Hossa Maltby - Draper - McCarty Lidstrom - Rafalski Stuart - Kronwall Fisher - Chelios Cujo Legace (Can't wait for the hate)

But the bulk of his career he was 18. He could get injured tomorrow and never play again. He wouldn't come close to Satan wearing 81 then. Anyways... can someone explain this quote to me The Bolts had the longest active Cup drought in history? They were added in 92... it took 12 years. Toronto hasn't won since 67, and Blackhawks finally broke a 49-year drought. I don't understand that at all.

Same problem happens with the White Sox, I guess it'd be Red/White Sock?

Shanny says he'll always feel like a Red Wing
Shady Ultima replied to One4TheWings's topic in General
To be honest, I was only a child when Vernon played, and really have no true memories of him, and I had always been a huge fan of Cujo, even prior to him becoming a Red Wing. While I believe Hasek to be a better goalie, I just liked Cujo better. -
Funny you mention that. My grandpa used to love the Bruins, because of how Orr played, but he told me so often, that in today's game, Orr would be horrible. He had NO defensive ability compared to what we have now. So trying to compare Lids to Orr is hard. They were both the BEST d men of their era, but those eras are not comparable.

My top 10 1. Stevie 2. Shannahan 3. Lids 4. Z 5. Dats 6. Ozzie 7. McCarty (hometown boy!) 8. Cujo 9. Hull 10. Legace (boy, I know I'm going to get s*** for this one) -
If only Ozzie had played well last year, he'd have himself in a Wings jersey. Mind you, the one of him in an Islanders jersey is a joke. He was gone from Detroit for all of... what, 5 years? He spent almost all his career here, and should never have been made in any jersey other than a Winged Wheel. I agree on some points above, Franzen, Kronwall, Raffi, and maybe a couple others deserve to have Figures in the Red Wings jersey.

The reason they left was not primarily financial reasons either. Where in the US, the State could fund new arenas, Canada's Federal Government refuses funding for arenas. The old Winnipeg and Quebec stadiums closed because they needed a new arena, and were unable to build one. In fact, I seem to remember seeing a report somewhere, that the Nordiques had the second highest attendance average in the league up until they were sent packing. I don't believe that either of the teams were financial drains like the Coyotes, Thrashers, Panthers and Nashville.

I miss Shanny. He was one of my favourite all time Wings. -
Looking through some of the others, Dan Ellis' with Zeus and Thor is awesome, as is Turco's

I think they're pretty even. I do believe Lemieux minus his injuries would have been the best. He was better naturally then Gretzky, but Yzerman is definitely in the top 5. But when you look at the whole picture, not just their total points, but their entire skill set, it becomes much harder. I'd rather have Yzerman if I had a team with a lot of other players who could score, and needed more D and Leadership. I'd rather have Lemieux if I had a team that was solid defensively and just needed someone to come in and score goals. As for the Messier mention above, I'd never want Madonna Messier on my team. It's an insult to all leaders in the NHL that the trophy for Leadership is named after that *******.
-
I'd say Lemieux was MUCH better offensively, as already stated, but have to agree, Stevie had the edge for the other side of the game.

Apparently, they're 89x's thoughts really.
-
That's fine. Now explain how Z is a power forward? The guy isn't that big, and uses more his skill, speed and intelligence then his body strength to win.
-
I'd say Montreal is the Yankees of Baseball. Toronto is the cubs. 102 years for the cubs, 43 for the Leafs, and now (thanks to the Blackhawks win) the longest drought in the NHL.

I've always liked Eaves. Good for him to do something like this!
-
I'm sorry, I did include players that ARE currently with us, but don't have lifetime contracts... yet.
-
So I was thinking, of all the teams in the NHL, Detroit is one of the few to have so many lifers. Yzerman, Lidstrom, most likely Z, Dats and Franzen, as well as many others. Of the young players on our team, or going to be on our team, who do you think is likely to be a Wing for the Rest of their career? Remember, only players that were DRAFTED here count. Even if Eaves stays with us, it's not the same as a draft pick. For me, I'd say, we'll be holding on to Smith and Tatar for sure.
-
Interesting. I guess they're starting to allow it... But they didn't like Modano take 16? (Or was it 6?)

I was going to talk about the poor defensive ability on that, with Raffi on 3rd, but a 3rd scoring line is an interesting idea for sure. I don't think Kindl will take over Ericsson's spot. E had a bad rookie year. It happens. He has potential defensively... Kindl is not likely to be very good in his own end. From what I understand, he's very Mike Green like. I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded at some point...
