isn't 5000 the highest fine? The NHL needs to at the VERY LEAST raise their fine limits such that it hurts the player even a little. Quennville gets fined 25k for making a rude gesture and Lucic gets 5k for spearing another human in the nuts - something is wrong here. The jump from fine to suspension is so huge right now. At least be fining players 50k+ or something for this so they feel it at least financially.

If Lucic ends up injuring someone in the next game I will seriously question the judgement of the NHL and what they are even trying to do with the rules. Suspensions are supposed to teach players a lesson to clean up their act next time - without it Lucic can just go out there next game and pretend that what he did was within the rules.

This is why dirty players will never change - Guys like Lucic and Neal that are fan favourite players get away with murder - without being suspended they have no reason to stop. Players know this and try things BECAUSE they don't get suspended in the playoffs. Make an example of him and I doubt he does it again as he would be letting his team down heavily. The worst part is there was never even a penalty call! Literally Lucic got a free one without any repercussions. After the Weber turnbuckle on Z a while back I completely lost my faith that anything will be worthy of suspension in the playoffs. Or anyone remember the post-game mauling by Malkin on Z in the playoffs a while back? That should have been an automatic 1 game suspension that just magically never happened. The NHL is a joke in rule enforcement and they just like to come down on borderline NHL players that have minimal impact on a team's success.

I've heard a lot of places that Perlini will be a bust. I really like Barbashev - is he a C or winger? I get mixed answers when I google him online. I think this team needs a little more Russian influence in it like the old days. Kempe seems like the wing's wet dream too - Swedish, big, strong, C - everything we can't resist.

I actually think Smith would have developed better if he was up earlier. First - he could have learned from Lids. Second - no matter how old you are as a rookie dman you will make rookie mistakes - Smith is going through that now.

Comparing to Lidstrom with a lower cap might not be fair - but I agree with you completely - compare to top dmen in todays nhl: AMac at 5 mill - what does PK Subban get? Karlsson's contract is like 6.5 mill or something too... Doughty only makes 2mill more than the new AMac contract. Glendening is sitting at 600k for 3 years and although he is a completely different player - he isn't 1/8th as valuable as AMac is despite playing different positions. Its funny that the top star players will be stuck around 9 mill with many sitting around 7-8 mill and then these middle of the pack players are getting the true overpayment. The NHL should increase cap hits each year proportional to the increased cap growth each year so that stupid contracts like these stick out for the full length of the contract rather than looking okay in 3-4 years.

I would say on the whole I have been pretty against trading our prospects for the last couple years. We need our youth for the future with our core aging. Our kids are well developed and have fewer holes in their game due to development in the minors. Nyquist was definitely one of my favourite prospects (along with Jarnkrok) for the last little while. Holland has also had some bad trades in recent history and I kind of want to keep our kids rather than potentially getting fleeced. My big concern is just that we showcase our prospects in the NHL before trading them. Its cheap to buy low on a prospect that hasn't proven anything at the NHL level but has lots of potential - this is something I wouldn't mind Holland doing with other teams when they have logjams in the pipeline (PHX for example with dmen). I don't want to pay full/over price for a dman in their prime when we have a few in the pipeline for free that just need some developing. Finally, we have some of the top scouts in the NHL and we should keep trusting them.

Looks like I opened up a can of worms... I think we can all agree we are happy with Tatar and Nyquist rather than having Bouwmeester. Even if it was one of these guys plus something else I wouldn't be too happy. Considering what we have coming up the pipeline on D we will have a massive logjam soon without Jay in the mix.

If this is true - which it may not be - it shows how little Ken Holland really knows/believes in his prospects. Jarnkrok is killing it over in NSH and these two are playing amazing in Detroit. You can't just go offering up young players as trade bait before you see what they can do in the NHL - its stupid. If Jarnkrok had put up 9 points in 12 games in Detroit prior to the trade his value would have been much higher and he would be valued similar to Sheahan currently. Bottom line - give prospects a legitimate NHL chance to solidify their value before you go and ship them off.
