Consider this: If we fail to make the playoffs we can trade Alfie to a contender and get a decent pick likely for him - that is a free high pick for us. Weiss is on a moveable contract as well and if we don't need him we could move him as well because he is young enough and has good potential with a bunch of 50+ point seasons with terrible linemates. Also - I doubt the 4 points in 17 games had anything to do with the bum wrist that he ended up getting surgery on... That isn't indicative of how he will play when in Detroit when healthy and with better linemates.

Z will move back to wing and be up there (25+) again this season hopefully. When Z scored 40 he was on the wing. Being a C really hampers your ability to score goals. Ryan isn't defensively responsible enough for Holland's taste and gets out-compete often.

Brunner turned down 2 deals from holland for 2 years and 3 years - this is on him at this point. He isn't a proven commodity and can't ask for too much if he truly "loves detroit." I understand that he is 26 and is trying to make decent coin before his career is over but this isn't the time to make bank - he should sign a short deal and show he can play 82 nhl games in a season at a high level then make bank.

Nyquist would have been involved for us... His compete level is off the charts - just look at how he back checks as a winger - its insane. I think Gus could be a better two-way player than Ryan in the future and put up similar point totals just not as many goals. Just my two cents. I see why Holland didnt make the move.

Cleary has no place on this team unless holland is thinking trade. We have too many spare parts right now and no cap space after re-signing RFAs

I think we are very well set for the 2015/2016 season. With Bert, Sammy, Alfie, Eaves, Monster, Quincey all coming off the books we have a nice chance to inject some youth such as Jarnkrok, Pulks, Sheahan, Ferraro if they show that they are capable of being in the NHL. Otherwise we can sign 1 year plugs for the year. We will have plenty of cap space left over as well during that year to re-sign big E. I cannot understate the importance that Weiss doesn't have a NTC/NMC as we may need to make room for Jarnkrok at centre in the future (Jarnkrok will start at wing likely) and Weiss' contract looks moveable if he stays at least a 50+ point guy.

Weiss is a legit 2C. Fil was a borderline 2C but a good top 6 LW as well. We couldnt really throw Z and Dats together wothout giving up 2C to fil who isnt a threat at centre. Weiss allows us to do this all day. He is also great insurance if helm goes down or isnt ready. Weiss also has the ability to throw the body around too which fil didnt do much. The move the LW will increase Z's longevity. I would like to see Franzen bought out next year with oir second amnesty if he doesnt perform this year as his contract will look bad in a couple years as he ages. Jarn is ready next year but can start at RW. I think that we can always move a C if need be as andersson, weiss, helm dont have any trade restrictions.

Barring a trade we will see these guys in the minors: Sammy, Tootoo/Eaves, Emmerton. Bert could see extended time on LTIR. I also think Holland wants to see what happens with Helm first before moving/waiving Emmerton

Anything over 5 would have scared me a bit. Holland pulled this one off nicely. Lets just see how he handles the extra forwards we have before we go praising him full out.

Those picks could busted easily. You are using hindsight. You could trade the first overall pick for a current top nhl player instead just like taking alfie over a young unproven brunner.

Following your logic we should just trade all our draft picks for known players then because we can predict their output.
