refs need to realize that there WILL be penalties to be called and not to call soft ones and then let the more obvious ones go so it doesn't get out of hand

shaw is a child. what a disgrace.

smith is just finding his feet. you can see his confidence grow with each game. he looked better towards the end of the ducks series when he scored his first goal of the season and has improved a bit each game since. he will be a great player for years to come once he settles in and learns when he should use his skill and when to just play it smart/simple. Remember when we were all calling for Holland to buy low on Bogosian and then atlanta didn't trade him and it turned out he became a stud? The same could very well happen here.

My biggest issue in hockey is if a player does something intentional outside of the game play to injure another player. I have seen far too many unpunished punches to the back of the heads, elbows to the head away from the play (conacher), weber headslams into the boards, etc that just shows that certain players intend to injure and have no disregard for other players. THIS is the stuff I want penalized - not a hit that was made with good intentions as a hockey play that was borderline. Seems like the nhl hardly reviews stuff that goes on away from the play - but I've seen some stuff these playoffs when there should have been at least a hearing for. The NHL is splitting hairs over the slight timing of hits and if the head was "principle point of contact" or incidental etc. They break down the video to the millisecond - its just not reasonable to think a hit will look all that clean when you slow it down that much. I just think its dissecting the hockey plays to punish players and ignoring the non-hockey stuff.

I just hope helm doesn't come back and get another freak injury like the skate cut. I say just relax and target next season.

I think if we eventually see Jarnkrok and Datsyuk regularly centering lines in the top 6 we see Z rekindle his scoring touch on the wing.

Franzen and Hossa are pretty close as far as talent - but Hossa is by far more consistent. I think if Franzen could return to his playoff beast form then he would be worth it. I'd prefer to have a playoff performer than a regular season performer.

Phaneuf did a whole lot of standing around after he got tired midway through the third.

I feel like in certain seasons certain players just get in a groove. For the last few seasons Z's groove has been assists over goals and has played that kind of hockey. But some players develop a knack for the net that lasts for a season then fades. Think Brad Boyes, Nick Backstrom etc.. If you aren't a pure goalscorer but you get hot early on (and have the tools to score) you can put up monster numbers for a year. I think it is entirely possible that if Z got hot early next season playing on Datsyuk's wing he could get above 30 goals again easily. Its just about habit and hitting that perfect habit early.
