Wow, they're in worse shape than I remember. Getting rid of Versteeq and Sopel (for picks) and signing Niemi for 1.5 (deserves more) then filling their roster with ahl plugs still leaves them 1.3 over the cap. Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Kane ($6.300m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m) Patrick Sharp ($3.900m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Dustin Byfuglien ($3.000m) Tomas Kopecky ($1.200m) / Troy Brouwer ($1.025m) / * plug ($0.500m) * plug ($0.500m) / * plug ($0.500m) / * plug ($0.500m) * plug ($0.500m) DEFENSEMEN Brian Campbell ($7.143m) / Duncan Keith ($5.538m) Brent Seabrook ($3.500m) / * plug ($0.500m) * plug ($0.500m) / * plug ($0.500m) * plug ($0.500m) GOALTENDERS Cristobal Huet ($5.625m) / * Antti Niemi ($1.500m) CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS ROSTER: 22; PAYROLL: $58.181m; CAP ROOM: $-1.381m BONUSES: $0.000m

Don't think we could afford to give him more than 2-2.5 (which IMO is high for him) and there are plenty of teams in a better cap situation than us who could match that. Before we played them on Saturday, Ladd had 12g in 64gp on a team that has no problem scoring. Given all of the s*** that Cleary has taken, Danny has 13g in 54gp. I was just throwing Ladd's name out there because I knew he was a RFA and wasn't making a whole lot of money (i figured he'd be making <1.5). Honesty I hope the wings don't go after any RFA's this summer unless they can sign them for 1-1.5mil (which in most cases their team would match). Poaching RFA's and giving up draft picks is an expensive way to build a team. Edit: Theres absolutely no way the caps let Backstrom go for a price we could afford. They would trade Semin for picks to keep him if they had to, he's ovie's setup man after all, and only 22! Theodore's contract is up this summer so I'm sure they'll find some cash for Backstrom

Eriksson signed a big extension a few months ago... in the range of 4-4.5 Don't mean to be a downer but there is no way the wings will be pouching any big name rfa's. If they do go after an rfa (which I highly doubt they will) it would be someone like Ladd or Hjalmarsson (sp) from a team that is extremely close to the cap

Only way Vancouver doesnt match is on a gross overpayment (over 5.5) and it's not worth giving up 2 1st rounders and a 2nd to sign him for >5mill. Never going to happen

Official Poll: Filppula at 3 Mil. or Hossa at 5.4 + return for Filppul
ceebs replied to a topic in General
Without starting a new thread: Hossa at 5.4 or Flip + Hudler at 5.85? To me it's not even close when you put it that way, flip and huds everytime. -
Sounds like another player on this team... Hudler would be huge on the 2nd unit PP and would fit nicely on the current 2nd line with Z and Cleary.

It's not a straight flip + return vs hossa, theres much more to it that that. Of course right now the Hossa option looks better but what about when Hossa is 37-41 and still making 5.4 mil? The fact is that it doesnt make sense to have 3 players locked up for 10 years into their 40's. I'm a bit worried about having Z locked up for that long as I don't see him being an impact player when he loses a step, but that's another topic all together. Also whats our 3rd line going to look like without flip and one of bert/willy. Flip is a solid 3rd line center -
2010 NHL Trade Deadline Thread - March 3rd, 3:00 PM ET

Maltby is on LTIR and they don't expect him back this year, and now that holmer and franzen are back he would have been our 13th forward... not exactly a huge upgrade. -
He also does an exceptional job at blocking punches with his face. He's no Todd Fedoruk but he definitely has the potential.

The talent difference in womens hockey is to great to allow checking. At the olympic level players from the USA and Canada would absolutely destroy the much weaker skating players from other nations. Do you think this is going to get more girls to join in nations that are still developing hockey? Also there are many more mens league anywhere you go. This allows men and boys starting hockey to always play against similarly skilled players. Around here for boys playing hockey there is 5 levels (AAA, AA, A, B, rec) for girls there is only 1 level. This means there are some very good girl players (some AAA calibre) playing against some very weak players. If they were allowed to check you would see these weak players literally being carried off in stretchers, then quitting the game. It would be the equivalent of having the AAA boys playing in the rec leagues, then allowing contact. They want to increase enrollment in womens hockey so having players quit would hurt the game. I do find womens hockey harder to take seriously because there is no contact but they will not and should not be adding checking anytime soon.

Anyone Else Miss the Larger International Rinks?
ceebs replied to Behind Enemy Lines in CO's topic in General
I agree. Apparently playing on the smaller ice saved 10 million and freed up 35000 tickets. This article only mentions GM place but I believe they are using 2-3 rinks for the mens and womens hockey so they would have had to make the changes to these rinks as well. -
Anyone Else Miss the Larger International Rinks?
ceebs replied to Behind Enemy Lines in CO's topic in General
He's saying the Olympics should be played on international ice because that's the way it always has been. It has nothing to do with what the fans want to see... it's because as far as I know they have ALWAYS used the larger ice surface and for the sake of saving money they decided to play in Vancouver on NHL ice. -
For a lot of players it's a personal preference. Right players playing on the right side (and left on the left) will have an easier time breaking out of their zone and it is generally easier to make and receive passes when you are playing the same side as you shoot. Players playing on their opposite wing will have an advantage offensively. While shooting their sticks will be in the center of the ice, instead of by the boards, generating a better shooting angle. Shanny was a good example of this as he scored many of his goals shooting off the rush as he was on your off wing. Also one timers are much easier on your off wing. So in general it is much easier to play on the same wing you shoot and there are defensive advantages while playing on your off wing makes making and recieving passes a bit more difficult but you are in a better position to shoot/make plays in the offensive zone.

Capgeek makes the lines up by ordering the players cap hits from largest to smallest. He meant that we could not fit that roster under the cap if May, Leino and Lebda are traded/waived. Holland has some work to do when Lilja comes back. I had figured it would be May, Leino and Lebda that would be outa here but apparently we need to cut even more cap space than that. There could be some way of fitting it under the cap as Miller hasn't been here the whole year so Tampa would have taked some of his cap hit. Hope Lilja gets his play to where it was before the injury.. if not, I hate to say it at 80% he's no better than Lebda.

He was saying that Kindl is soft.. With that being said no way I'd trade Kindl for Latendresse. I think at the time Abdelkader was the right choice, no idea how he'll turn out though. I see abby as a 3rd line center, but I also see helm and emmerton (2-3 yrs out) in that slot too so it will be interesting.

Rightttt.... cause the reason the wings beat the hawks in the last 15 years was officiating... I'm sure those hawks would have won at least 4 cups if they were getting the kind of calls detroit got...

1. I would say the majority of the goals in question (under a goalies pad, goalie pulling it out of the net ect... are fairly close to flat. Pucks on edge are harder to pick up by cameras and harder to judge by ref's so it would be no different for a sensor system. 2. This isnt going to pick up shots, as it is fairly obvious when a puck flying through the air goes in using video replay. It's for all the goalmouth scrambles similar to the one against howard today. My point was if the NHL wanted this to happen it would and I'm sure if they hired a team of engineers they could come up with something more feasible than what I thought of in under 5 minutes. I do believe it could be done with the technology available.
-
If the NHL wanted to install a system like this, I don't believe it would be too difficult, without a doubt there is the technology available. All they would have to do was install the sensor the width of a puck inside the goal line, that way if any part of the puck touched the sensor it's over the goal line and a goal. Something metallic, mixed evenly into the rubber before the pucks are molded could be used. An extremely small amount of foreign material would be enough to trigger a sensor and shouldnt change the dynamics too much, they'd still be able to freeze the pucks (a problem with the fox pucks). My point is it could be done, but evidently is something the NHL is not interested in.
