Yeah I'm sure GM's will be throwing first-rounders for the rights to sign someone who wants a few mil more than Ovechkin.

Interesting thought on Kovalchuk's impact for the Devils:
-
You seem to always jump at the chance to criticize this team. Why? Are you actually a fan?

The Wings need to cut some forwards and this deal also sheds a tiny bit of salary. I think the likelihood of Burke accpeting a deal of this sort is pretty good as there is undeniable potential in Ville Leino and Jason Williams would fill in nicely (and cheaply) for the loss of Hagman. Ponikarovski is not a star forward but Holland is not in a position to acquire a big contract without dropping an equally big one. Once the playoffs have begun, Ville Leino will become superfluous and I don't think Williams would be any more valuable than Ponikarovski. Furthermore it frees up roster and cap space so real third/fourth liners like Miller, Helm and Eaves can get ice time. A deal of this sort is what will be needed to get anything in return for Ville Leino. Holland needs to avoid waivers like the plague so does anyone else think this could be a good option??
-
It's almost impossible for him to stick around. He's completely played himself off the team and Ken Holland cannot comply with the salary cap if he keeps players that aren't playing, on the books. I agree he certainly could make a turnaround, but Holland is backed into a corner where he has no choice but to move players. Leino has given him no choice.

You must've got that crack from the same person who told you that you can somehow "lift the cap" when you have someone on a conditioning stint during the deadline. This post gets a very big WTF?!?! from me.
-
I'm confused. This is the first time the word "untouchable" has been used in this thread.
-
Helm was on the roster as a 2-way at the beginning of the season.

To put it very simply. In the Wings case, the amount on any day we've gone over the daily cap hit is equal to our LTI exemption for that day. The LTI exemption for every day of the season is added to make the LTIR at the end of the season. So for example: If a team has only 4 days using LTIR (just to keep it simple) of $10,000 over the daily cap hit. Then you could say that at the end of the season, their actual cap allowance is $56,840,000 because they got a total of $40,000 LTIR. However on those 4 days they did not accrue any cap allowance. This is the case for Detroit for pretty much the entire season. Aside from very early on, we have accrued nothing to use later in the season so while we probably can go slightly over the dailt cap amount, that amount would be negligible. Also, with regards to what the Wings have spent based on assumption (1), that is incorrect. It is those players plus the pro-rated cap hits of any players recalled (Janik, Kindl, Ritola etc.) for the time they were on the roster. This puts Detroit over the allowance but that is okay because of LTIR. This is such a tough thing to explain. Is it beginning to make sense?
-
Well yes and no. The Wings situation as you described is not accurate because LTIR is not really relief. As I understand it, when a team is required to use LTI exemption they are essentially up against the cap and are not accruing any money for future use. If that had not been the case the Wings could have made a decent acquisition at the deadline of $2-3m. But the bold is indeed correct.
-
The number I have is $292,551 after those four have been removed. That leaves 13 forwards, 7 D and 2 goalies.
-
That's not true. You can go over as long as you're not over the cap at the end of the season. So basically, to go over it at some point you must have been under it as well to offset it. Does that make sense?
-
It's a very difficult question to answer because there is too much information that isn't readily available. It's very difficult to work out the exact LTI exemption and also the amount of accrued cap space prior to the injuries. To keep it simple though, the Wings will probably just need to meet the daily cap spend or thereabouts. Getting Maltby, Abdelkader, Leino and Lebda of the roster would achieve that.

Lilja circa 2007??

"There's always a risk of re-injury."

...and many men apparently.

You make some good points but I have to disagree with the bolded. The entire reason I thought I throw this out there, is because of the 2008 playoffs. He just wasn't able to be healthy. Colorado could replace him on the roster (which obviously didn't help), but Sweden cannot.
-
Yeah, I neglected to mention his clear improvement in 07/08 (particularly in the playoffs) but for the point I was making, I found it would be irrelevant. But indeed there was a solid 12 months of great value to the team. His shot-blocking in particular was very important for our PK. He seems to be a natural at that, but I can foresee a lot of turnovers early on and I think the love and admiration for Andreas displayed here at LGW might decline quickly.
-
It seems emotion and Stanley Cup nostalgia are playing a big part in many Wings fans' evaluation of the impact Lilja's return will have. When he was healthy in '07, you needed more hands and feet to count his turnovers in some games. He's just taken a year off, I wonder how far his timing will be off.

With the new rules not allowing injured players to be replaced during the Games, I really think the decision to actually put Forsberg on that list should be very carefully contemplated. They have a roster of 23 players and with Forsberg named, it's more than a real possibility that will drop to 22 at some stage of the tournament. If one or two more players go down they can pretty much say good night. I know Peter Forsberg is a great player and Swedes think he's God, but unless he's able to display consistent, continued durability in the lead-up to the Games, it could prove to be a very costly mistake to name him to the team. Just my 2c with regards to Team Sweden.

HAHAHA!!

No Miller is before him in jersey # too.
-
Lol. Not gonna lie, I'm a little surprised Leino has 5 votes out of 77.
-
Yeah Miller wasn't around then and Miller>May.
