Why do other NHL teams' fans hate the Wings?
New Orleans Chris replied to FischersChick2's topic in General
Just some perspective from a new Wings fan here... from what little exposure I have had to other Wings fans (mostly on this site) I don't get the Yankee syndrome thing. I know the histories are similar, but the arrogance of Yankee fans puts them in a class by themselves among major league sports, equaled only (possibly) by Cowboys fans. -
Hi. I am a New Orleans resident who is fairly new to hockey. I attended a few ECHL (extreme minor league) games when we had a team in New Orleans, and have been missing it ever since. My one NHL experience was a Blues game in St. Louis. I have chosen to follow the Red Wings, mainly because I have always been fascinated by Detroit, and also because they are playing the Blackhawks today. I already hate Chicago because of the Bears (Saints fan), and I think they may be one of the Red Wings' main rivals? Anyways, just wanted to introduce myself, and apologize in advance for any forthcoming dumb questions (I'll try to keep them to a minimum). And please, no Katrina jokes.

got it. (went to wikipedia- they have a picture.)
-
i think it makes sense. the offending team would be on offense?
-
Damn, and I was hoping I could meet another fan for a beer and talk about what exactly "icing" is. You live all the way in Mandeville. Which reminds me, what exactly is icing?
-
i think you misunderstood me.

I love Austin. I have a cousin who lives off Bee Cave Rd., on Barton Creek. Thanks for the welcome.
-
looking forward to rooting for a consistently good team. 43 years wait with the Saints was long enough.
-
thanks for the videos guys. I'm not "feeling it" yet, but I'm sure I will in time. really looking forward to watching more hockey.
-
also, another important question- are there are a lot of women on these boards? The Saints site I have been going to has been overrun with 'em, and I just want to get an idea of how straight I get to shoot here.

starting to see what you all (ouch) were talking about with Yzerman. I've heard of Gordie Howe, and looking at Yzerman's stats lined up next to his, it looks like I really did miss out on something special.

cool... that'll save me quite a bit of money. (Can I say this yet) Go Wings! (excuse my Southern politeness- it's ingrained).
-
Thanks Zettie. This is the kind of stuff I need to know. I'll try to watch more to pick up on the in-game rules.
-
thanks. reading Wikipedia, I see the Wings are the "octpus" team. that's cool.

no, I knew you were joking. But right now my opinions would be something like " he hits it really hard" or "he's really fast," and I know how annoying that can be. I will try to give you some newbie perspective, though.

Ok. How does the points system work? On a more personal note, I'm glad the colors are just red and white, and not red and black. I have some personal animosity against the Atlanta Falcons which would have been hard to get over.
-
Yeah, I guess I should have thought of that. Thanks.

Well, the history on the official site isn't working, but at least I got to see all the Stanley Cup banners. I'll try to steer clear of having opinions on players until I at least know all the rules of the game. Point taken.

Cool. I am going to go to the Red Wings site and try to learn the history. How many teams from each conference (?) get to the playoffs?
-
and now to I guess the biggest question(s)- what are the chances the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup this year? I have been reading the site some, and I think I saw somewhere that they haven't won since 1993, but I also saw that they are 11-time champions. I don't mind rooting for a team that isn't great (I am a lifelong Saints fan, after all), but looking at the standings, the Red Wings seem to be pretty good.

I'd love it if we could get back a minor league team. Those games were so fun. Thanks for the SuperBowl congrats. I'd say it was a dream come true, but I honestly don't even think that describes it.
-
ok. I was wondering about the site. I can't seem to find on it a lot of the things I am used to on my Saints' site. Again, thanks for the welcome guys. Looking to learn a lot about hockey. The Olympics really drew me back in, and I am thinking about getting some kind of hockey package if my cable provider has it.

thanks guys. edit: the first game I watched was a win. maybe y'all (yeah, i know, sorry) should keep me around.
