Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended
MulesWillFly93 replied to Matt's topic in General
Okay, maybe a bad choice of words, but what I mean is that it's causing the Isles to look bad from the players' perspectives. Sure, as a player, you expect things to happen to you that are best for your team but are not necessarily what you want (getting traded, benched, etc.). However, I think Nabokov's bluffing forces the Islanders into territory that I would call unreasonable by threatening their player with suspension or tolling in order to make him play. Now, you can say that Nabokov is being a prima donna by not agreeing to play for the Isles, and that's a fair opinion to have, but it's also a pretty shrewd move by him, and here's why. I'm guessing that most players are going to take his side since he's a fellow player and all, and my prediction is that this is going to make them more cautious about signing with a team who has to threaten its players to play. In order to stop everybody from thinking they're unreasonable, I think the Isles will have to be a little accommodating to what Nabokov wants to do. So whether the Isles are right or wrong in this situation, the players' general view on how they're treating Nabokov is going to be pretty negative unless they give in and work with him a little. -
Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended
MulesWillFly93 replied to Matt's topic in General
Gotcha, agreed. And this post actually just made me figure out why Nabokov isn't reporting (at least not for the moment). I would say you can't blame the Isles for taking an opportunity when they see one - their goalie gets injured, and along comes a nice and cheap one ripe for the picking. Yeah, it's not exactly "nice" of them to claim him when Detroit did all the work, but life isn't fair. However, Nabokov refusing to report shows the true colors of the Islanders' management: a-holes with no consideration for the players. If this had gone off without a hitch for the Isles, nobody would've really given it that much thought, but now that Nabokov has raised hell about it, it's making the Islanders look really bad and will cause other potential players to think twice before signing there. Now, will the management continue to act like dicks and either suspend him or toll him, or will they figure out that their reputation is on the line and try to work with him? That's the big question. If they threaten either of those things, I think Nabokov will suddenly change his mind and decide to play the rest of their 30 measly games, and then go on to a better team next year, which isn't so horrible. If they decide to try to save their reputation, he gets put out on the market again and waves bye-bye to the Isles. Nice. Unless he isn't just bluffing and keeps refusing to report, in which case he and/or his agent is a dumbass. -

You sure they're not moving to San Diego? This sounds like the kind of sludge our City Council goes nuts for. Here's a good explanation of what will happen if Nabokov doesn't report to the Islanders, courtesy of Bob McKenzie: http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie/?id=350647 -
Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended
MulesWillFly93 replied to Matt's topic in General
Yeah, but it'd make it a heck of a lot easier for him if he were playing for a team who wasn't losing right and left. If he rolls the dice, maybe he won't make it to the Wings, but he might at least get claimed by a team who doesn't suck quite as bad. Still doesn't benefit us, but it'd give him a chance to show a little more of what he's got and maybe have a chance of making the playoffs instead of wasting his time (he is 35, after all, so time is of the essence) bottom-feeding with the Isles. -

Because he's cheap, and they didn't even have to do any of the work. -

True, I certainly hope it wouldn't be worth it to them just to take a bit of an advantage away from us in the playoffs (if they do end up making them). And hey, that's one more team we know he DEFINITELY wouldn't report to, at least. I don't know why I'm so hopeful here, but my fingers are still crossed! -

Okay, don't say I'm never an optimist: if Nabs is put back on waivers, maybe him refusing to report to the Isles will discourage other teams from claiming him, knowing that there's a good chance he won't play for them, either. Of course, that wouldn't deter San Hose-a from claiming him and suspending him just to tick us off, but hey, it might make other teams who want him to play think twice. Hehe. Not to mention that it's pronounced na-BOE-kov, not na-BOCK-ov. And certainly not NAH-buh-kov (I am singling out Sting on this one). -
Yes!! I forgot to say that last night. Go and get yourself some hockey skates (good ones) ASAP! The balance point is totally different than rental skates. I started out with rentals, and I basically had to re-learn everything when I switched to hockey skates. It sucked.

Well, I'm enjoying seeing that "Nabokov to Wings" pic on NHL.com while it lasts, but here today, gone tomorrow, unfortunately. I hope we get SOMETHING out of this, whatever it is. -
My favorite is Vikingstad. How badass is that? He was on the Norwegian national team at Vancouver last year. Okay, hold the phone: check out his Wiki page - there's a whole section on his name! "Tore Vikingstad has an awesome name that has led people in North America to believe he is a legendary nordic figure." Holy crap, they're so right! Swear to God I didn't see this until I went on there right now. Other good ones: Niedermayer (my dad has to make an Animal House reference every time he hears it, heh) Niittymaki Latendresse (aww, how sweet, lol) Quick (best goalie name ever) Bryzgalov Del Zotto Getzlaf Hamhuis (Ham-hwis? Ham-hyoos? Whatever, it's funny however you're supposed to say it) Festerling Nodl (I always call him Noodle) Lundqvist (not uncommon-sounding to me...I just like the name) Pretty much all Finnish names are awesome. My favs on the Wings are Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, and Abdelkader. We've got some good ones. Oh dude, and I can't wait until Jarnkrok starts playing for us...Iron fricking Hook, everybody!

I started skating last February; I was 25 at the time. I'd gone about twice in my life before that, and the last time was at least 10 years before then. It's definitely slow going at first, but man, is it the best feeling when you stop holding on to the boards and can finally get out there and fly (to a certain, wobbly extent). I would definitely suggest taking classes to learn the proper form (bent knees, staying on the inside of your blade, etc.), but once you get some basics down, have at it. I didn't take classes at first, and I was way too wobbly because I was standing up too straight. The more time you have to get used to bending your knees, the better. I still have to concentrate on it, but you'll know if you're doing it right or not because when your knees are bend, you don't feel half as likely to fall over. So yeah, classes are a good thing. I can now skate forward confidently (although I'm still pretty slow...it's depressing seeing 12 year old hockey players blow past you, but they're getting a LOT more practice than I am), and I can skate backward really crappily, hehe. Still working on that part, but I thought I'd never be able to skate backward in a million years, so I get this big grin on my face when I do it, even if I do look like a duck waddling. I haven't taken any hockey lessons yet, but I think I'll get started here in the near future. I'm worried about being the biggest beginner on the beginners' team when I do actually join one, but I love hockey so much that I can't not give it a go - I at least have to try! Anyway, take it from me, it can be taught! I went from not being able to let go of the boards to making sharp turns to avoid small children crashing in front of me in about 6 months, so it's not a hopeless cause!

Met Jimmy Howard in July! He was super, super nice! Heck, he was more talkative than I was (I'm a bit shy). He's a great ambassador for the Wings organization, and I really appreciate him coming all the way out here just for the fans. I saw Stevie at the Draft this summer, doing his GM thing, but I obviously didn't get to talk to him. I kept looking for him on the way out, but the only person I saw at that point was Crosby, who was being chased by a horde of nutty girls (me not included). I also got to the Stanley Cup and all the other trophies!

I may be a softy, but dude, I am ready for them to stop sucking quite so badly. I've had my fun laughing and taking their fans down a notch, but now I just feel like they need to uphold the honor of being an O6 team and stop putting that title to shame. They don't need to get all Blackhawky on me and start winning Cups or anything, but I wouldn't mind seeing them make the playoffs. I gotta say, I love the waffles, though.

I noticed this and was wondering if anyone else did, or if I'm nuts again. It seemed like they weren't having that much trouble (relatively) getting into the Pens' zone by passing through neutral ice; however, instead of taking that route, which I thought was leading to some decent scoring chances when they did do that, they dumped and chased a lot, which was getting them absolutely nowhere. I noticed the same thing at Vancouver, except at Vancouver they were actually DOING the passing and getting right into the slot, and NOT settling for the dump and chase. I'm not understanding why they didn't do the same thing tonight. Maybe because their passing's a little off, so they didn't want to open themselves up to turnovers? I don't know...it still seems better than just dumping the puck in there and having Pittsburgh come up with it. Anyway, is this making sense at all?

McCollum has a broken finger; Howard is our backup. http://www.freep.com/article/20110118/SPORTS05/110118053/1053/sports05

Bahaha, true, what was I thinking? That'd be like Ron Hextall having a "Free Hugs Day." If they do get injured, go ahead and blame me.

Cool, congrats Nick! Glad Staal got picked as the other captain...that's a nice way to do it. I hope we get Stamkos - it'd be nice to see him and Lids play together once just for the Yzerman connection. I can't decide whether I want Nick to pick Perry or not...on one hand, he's not fit to polish Nick's shoes, but on the other, it'd be nice to have him NOT heckle our players for once. I have to say, this draft thing does add interest to the ASG. There's only so much you can do to improve it, but I like how there's at least an element of surprise about the teams now. Even if the game itself is still going to be a joke, at least there's a bit of lead-up to it now.

I guess you could say the Ducks aren't much of a challenge, but c'mon, it was a shut out! Sure seemed balls to the wall compared to the 1-4 loss I went to last season.

Wings @ Ducks, 12/3/10. 4-0. One of the best days of my life.

Center Ice only has one feed. I assume it's going to be Pittsburgh's. Kill me now. I could've sworn Engelland was suspended, but now I can't find anything about it. Well, poop...I thought we'd have one less little turd to put up with, but I guess not. Well, it'd be great to win this and be able to shove it in their faces that they lost to a bunch of Griffins, but I won't be too disappointed if we lose for the same reason. I'll just have to wait until March when I can see our usual superstars cream them IN PERSON!! All I can say for now is, break a leg, Kronwall and Franzen! Heck, and Zetterberg, for that matter.

Laaaame. Although at least we didn't get a bear in a gym suit (Bruins). I wouldn't mind the Transformer look that much if they'd made it a cool Transformer, but this just looks like one of Iron Man's first crude attempts. And the "tricycle of doom"...yeah, what can I say but lol? Wish we could've gotten actual bird wings since that's what's on our logo, but I guess they thought they had to do something different after the Flyer and the Capital. I like the King and the Lightning best, myself. Not that I love either, but they're the least lame to me. Of course, the King is more of a knight than a king, but whatever. This is sort of a dorky idea to start with, but I was willing to humor it at first. Unfortunately, most of the designs turned out just as lame as I thought they would. No offense to Stan Lee, who is still an awesome dude, but this particular project doesn't really grab me. Some of it is too obvious and looks recycled from more famous superheroes, while other parts make you wonder where they came up with that idea. Take the water sabre for the Sabre, for instance. They could've just gone with some kind of cool-looking sword (and maybe done sort of a medieval thing like the King), but instead it's made out of...water? Yeah, that's really bad-ass. At least Aquaman was telepathic...this guy just has the less-technologically-advanced version of a squirt gun.

Todd Bertuzzi - Emergency Goaltender
MulesWillFly93 replied to Wing Across The Pond's topic in General
Hehehe, gotta love Bert. You know, I have to say, I'd be curious as heck to see how that turned out. I mean, I don't REALLY want it to happen, but a voice inside me keeps saying, "Now THAT would be an interesting game!" Maybe they could have a charity game during the summer and have 2 of our skaters in goal and all of our goalies/goalie prospects skating. I know I'd pay to see that, heh. -
A Bunch of Team Jersey Changes (May Be) Coming Soon
MulesWillFly93 replied to zombi's topic in General
I hope they don't take the purple completely off the Kings' sweaters. I actually really like their current home jerseys - if they could just put the 3rd jersey logo on the black-and-purple home jersey, I think that would be perfect, myself. I like the throwback jerseys for a new 3rd; they're a little loud, but they work for an every once in a while kind of thing. Anything the Panthers and Thrashers do will be better than what they have now, although I hope the Panthers don't go back to the red, like the article suggests. They're better than the blue ones, yes, but they're still not great. They look like a barfed up pizza or something. I like Tampa's current jerseys, but as long as they don't change the colors, I might be down with a new design. I don't know, though; if it ain't broke... Also in that category is the Leafs' 3rd jersey; I love the '60s throwback one. The '70s one is okay, but the one they're using now is great. At least hang onto it a couple more seasons! And LOL @ the Pens. At least girls would buy those powder blue ones; I'm not sure who's going to buy these, except for color blind people, and frankly, that's probably an insult to them.
