Are you kidding? I agree that except for Alfie, it's not a 2nd line, but teams would kill for that to be the 3rd line. Also, Helm and Abby are looking great so I don't seeing anything wrong with them on the second line.

Franzen-Helm-Tatar was also really good when they were together for a couple of game. My conclusion is that Helm is just so good and works with everyone.

Not incompent - He just doesn't have a crystal ball. People say Quincey was actually quite good in Colorado - and for a team that lost Rafalski, knew they were going to lose Stuart, and possibly Lidstrom, we were kind of desperate to fill out our D. The fact that Quincey was familiar with our system and organization, fairly young, (and, yes, apparently was good when not in red and white) meant that he looked ideal. Sammy was signed in the year that we thought we had a chance at Parise/Suter. Missed out and nobody was really left except, but we needed some help - Enter Sammy. He also played better elsewhere and was familiar with the system. Anyone who's watched Weiss's struggles should appreciate the value of familiarity - It's not just the sense of loyalty that people criticize Holland for. No crystal ball to see that Sammy would miss almost all of last year. I've read in a number of places (Malik for one I think, but too late to search) that Sammy doesn't have this fabled NTC - his apparently is the type where he gives a list of teams he wouldn't go to. Can't really defend the Cleary signing, but he did produce in the playoffs last year. Not saying all Holland's decisions have turned out perfect, but if you criticize, I believe you have to make an attempt to remember the circumstances of the decision.

You criticize Crymson guessing whether Filppula wanted to play here and then you do the same thing guessing that Filppula absolutely didn't want to play for Babcock. Filppula played really badly last year. As such, management did not feel comfortable giving Filppula the 5m he wanted - It was deemed to be too much of a risk. Everyone around here scoffed at the idea that he could demand that much. Yes, the Wings offered him a long term contract and wanted him here, but he only had one really good season and that was on Zetterberg's wing - not as second line center where he would really be valueable. As such they offered him less. Filppula went to free agency and got his 5m from the Lightning. That's the version of events I read just about eveywhere.

We also used to have Lidstrom and a lot more talent. It's a new team. It's also a new league where great UFAs are few and far between. With that said, the Alfie and DeKeyser pick ups were 2 recent wonders. People will respond, saying that those pick ups had nothing to do with Kenny, but I feel they happened because the perception of the way the wings do and have done business. It's the loyalty of Kenny - which everyone seems to condemn recently - and the family environment within the Wings organization that made those things happen. Actually, that's true. When I saw it last night, I thought Cleary was the one in the corner and passed it all the way to Helm. But the replay doesn't lie - Cleary is only useful by accident.

I've never got why professional sports feel need to play the national anthem before games. For one thing, there is no intrinsic connection between sports and patriotism. Why do we have it for games, but not at the movies or other large gatherings. There really is no reason for it. The other thing is that so many of the players in the leugue are not American or Canadian. I wonder how they feel having to stand for a foreign anthem 82 a year. A liitle off topic, but I've had the thought recently.
