    Top 5 defenseman

His play has improved over the course of the season. He still makes some boneheaded plays and his personality sucks (strictly my opinion, his ego is too big for his play). That being said, he made a nice poised poke check there on the backcheck. The thing that usually burns Quincey is that him and Smith are paired together. Both of them have offensive instincts and want to make the initial pinch. Both have the tendency to want to get involved in the play. Unfortunately, neither of them are good enough to be playing the way they are. Both need to simplify their games and be more observant to the play and each other. Honestly, we just need another good stay at home personality on the back-end.

Babcock: Is he the right guy going forward?

That's not a true statement. Play can resemble and showcase work ethic, but it certainly can't define personality. Work ethic is a personality trait, although, not the only one.

Babcock: Is he the right guy going forward?

You have no idea if DeKeyser, Hank, Pavel, and Howard respond to one style of coaching. You also don't know if Kronner and Franzen need another. So no, you weren't saying what I was trying to say. I was correcting your statement, as it seems to be more aimed towards the person's current play rather than personality.

Babcock: Is he the right guy going forward?

It has nothing to do with how a player is currently playing or anything revolving around playing style. As a coach, you need to understand your players. Like any leadership position, you need to know your troops/players. You need to know their individual characteristics and personality. Do they need to get that intense criticism to respond, or do they need some guidance? Some players fold under that pressure, some excel. Coaching is a lot harder than just putting together some lines and telling them to go out there at the right time. Many coaches read numerous psychology books just strictly because of this reason. They want to learn the different learning styles, the different styles of respond. They need to understand personalities to know how to encourage/discourage.

Putting Hank's goal scoring problems into perspective.

I haven't thought he's looked healthy since like 15 games in. I think he's trying to be Steve Yzerman. The captain role probably plays a huge amount of stress on it as well does the state of the team. Datsyuk and Zetterberg know this team is build around them. As a captain and piece of the core, he's trying to play hurt. Now all of this is speculation on my part, but I wouldn't find it bizarre if true.

    4/17 GDT: Red Wings 2 @ Flames 3

Well boys, another night to look forward to. We play tonight, and most importantly, so does Columbus. Columbus vs. Ahaheim 10:00est Buffalo vs. Boston 7:30est -- NBCSportsNetwork Rivalry Wednesday Montreal vs. Pittsburgh 7:00est If Anaheim comes through tonight, we gain a 2 point lead over Columbus, while maintaining a game at hand. We would place Dallas 4 points behind us, with them having a game at hand. Dallas plays Vancouver tomorrow, and then St.Louis on Friday. St.Louis plays Phoenix tomorrow, and then Dallas on Friday. Columbus plays tonight and tomorrow against the Kings.

    Jim Nill's future

ESPN Insider has a new article up http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/blog/_/name/custance_craig/id/9181590/nhl-detroit-red-wings-gm-jim-nill-tops-10-candidates-become-gm-summer If someone has insider, can you tell us if that's the most they have about Nill? If you don't mind, you can share the other 9 also! What do you guys think? Would Nill leave the organization, or would he wait it out for the GM position in Detroit?

    Jim Nill's future

It's true. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2012/10/06/red-wings-jim-nill-marathon/1616771/ http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2012/04/red_wings_22.html Seems like he would take a job once his family health is better. I'm not sure how it is currently.

    Jim Nill's future

Interesting speculation over on RWC; Posters are saying that Nill's wife actually has cancer and was the main reason for him turning down the Montreal job. I could also see him not wanting to move the family and what not. He has strong ties to the franchise and is pretty comfortable. I honestly don't see him leaving the franchise but rather taking Holland's job in the future.

Then again Dallas always has a thing for screwing up games that would allow them into the playoffs. Call it a wash!

    2013 NHL Awards Favorites

Quenneville coached that team to what 24 consecutive games with a point? Never losing in regulation? As talented as they are, it still takes a lot of coaching to ensure they don't get complacent. I will add in that he has some great characters in the locker room, he still has some great feats this season. McLean... wow. He deserves something. For what he has done with the injury group... just words cannot even.. i don't know. Shows a lot about the coaching staff and the drive of their team. Babcock could get nominations, but I'd keep him out of it. For what he's done with the group of players he has had, with the injuries. It's great to see this team still in playoff contention (even though at times they aren't deserving of it).
  13. Well, he even acknowledges why he was sent back down. It's the business aspect of the game. The stupid part was not recalling him as the 4 person party, and leaving Lashoff down. We had 9 defensemen... we had enough depth. Allow one of most energetic youngsters come back up and pot a few more. Him and Nyquist would be fun to play with their speed. Nyquist settling down finally in the NHL, and Tatar already showing that poise.. oh man they can be deadly.

The one play that seems to give our Defense fits

There's numerous variables that go into offensive production. It's not simply so cut and dry. You can have all the skill in the world, with an all-star top 12 but they aren't going to be able to break into the zone without a proper transition. The start of the transition falls in the hands of the defensemen in almost all cases. They need to give a solid first pass clean on the blade of the moving forwards. If the puck is misplaced behind, infront, at their skates, etc it will cause a delay inwhich you will have more coverage and you won't be moving as cleanly as you should. If you can cleanly exit the zone with a good first pass, you break the neutral zone with speed. You NEED speed through the neutral zone or you're going to get clogged there. Teams will stack the line, and be able to cut your available lanes into the zone. It all goes downhill from there. Our defense is getting better, but we need a solid group that is used to one another. You can't be switching players everywhere throughout the season, they build no chemistry and they don't get comfortable. You also start sending the message of, "I was apart of a 3-0 win, and played a fine game. We worked hard together, showed that we had desperation in our game and we wanted the win." What do they get awarded with? Roster changes the next game. It gets frustrating. Our offense needs help, I can agree with you. We need that bonified goal scorer in our top 6. We have no one to turn to when we're in need of a goal. But, we need others thing to help support the offense also. Keeping it within the zone is one of those things also!

    Howard = Average

This is basically exactly what Goose said after the game. You could tell he was frustrated with what happened, and i'm guessing the whole locker room was as a whole. As they should be. As frustrating as it is, Jimmy was won this team more games than he has ever lost. How important of a game is what makes it so frustrating. If we were in the middle of the season and this stuff happened, whatever i'll write it off. It's just hard to write off when you lose in a game like that, and Columbus comes and finds a way to win against Anaheim. It's not what we needed. We needed Anaheim to beat Columbus, and we needed to take care of Calgary. I sit here today, and half of me wants to say we don't deserve the playoffs. Teams find ways to win, they beat the goalie regardless of the odds. We did not to that last night. I suppose you can say their display of urgency even with being down by 2 was a little rest-assuring. At least they weren't as deflated as I was. Jimmy seemed frustrated as well. He claimed responsibility of the 3rd goal, even though you could tell he was more frustrated with his teammates than himself in that play. In the end, he still could've wheeled it around to Quincey if he had connected with the puck. At the same time, he would've have had to go fetch the puck behind the net if Quincey or Brunner fully backchecked to help alleviate Beign's pressure. Overall.... just unfortunate.

    4/17 GDT: Red Wings 2 @ Flames 3

IIRC Howard stopped it, Ericsson touched it but it hit off Howards skate which made it go parallel with the net. Came up towards Howards skate while he was skating back into the crease, the puck got poke checked(?), came across hit jimmy's skate, went another way, and then Jimmy hit it with his right foot directly into the net. If he didn't move his right foot, it most likely would've went across the goal line or damn near it.

    4/17 GDT: Red Wings 2 @ Flames 3

He didn't have anytime to actually get anything on it. He saw it and immediately let something at the net (he also probably didn't know how much time was left and just wanted to get something off before the timer or a stick disrupted him. It honestly looked like Kipper got that in his trapper, at least from my fuzzy snowmen FSD+ feed.

I this game is a wipe for them right now. They started with Budaj and it just snowballed from there. Price needs to get some mental confidence back in his game. He's proven he can carry the Habs.
