Tired of Reading How Great Pittsburgh will be this Season
SouthernWingsFan replied to Hank's topic in General
Pittsburgh won the Cup last season. They got a lot of young talent and things going for them. Of course they are going to be hyped up because they won last year, regardless of who the names are on the roster. It's obvious they get plenty of attention and I hate that they beat Detroit and the Wings had two chances in a row to win the Cup. But what's also pretty damn irritating is fans acting all bitter or paranoid and not accepting that their team lost or making up reasons why the other's team trophy is tainted for whatever reason, or my team was the better team because of A,B,and C or X,Y,and Z and the other team's champiosnship doesn't count because of that. Pittsburgh won. Detroit lost. It's as simple as that. NHL higher ups may have been rooting for Pittsburgh to win but there were no conspiracies or referees that cost the Wings the series are any of that b.s. Calls are going to be made/missed for both teams in a playoff series and officiating will always be inconsistent no matter what. None of that or the scheduling or other crap didn't cost the Wings the series. The Wings themselves blew it the final 2 games. Pittsburgh will probably have another good year in all likelihood. Whether that results in another deep playoff run or a Stanley Cup, who knows... -

Violin, I'd probably know how to play it better. Odd or Weird

You probably know better than me so I'll go with that. Nevertheless, if he was chosen first or not, it wasn't a mistake that his numbers/play helped his cause to the All-Star game that year. I agree with everybody here that not long thereafter he started to snowball downhill. But he had decent times in St. Louis before that, his career wasn't all but finished when he left Detroit as was suggested in here more/less.

Ok, but Versus/NHL reached a deal that the NHL couldn't refuse to pass up because it made the most sense from a business standpoint at a time when NHL popularity/publicity was in the crapper. Of course Versus/OLN was unproven at the time in showing the big 4 in sports (football, baseball, hockey, basketball). A deal with ESPN though was not going to happen. So, with that in mind, what were the alternatives then? What other "unproven" networks at the time of showing big 4 sports would have been better than Versus/OLN? TNT/TBS? Probably not, they got the NBA market cornered and the NBA. Spike? AMC? FX? They are/were just as unproven at the time in showing major sports as Versus/OLN. What are your alternatives to Versus then?

Welcome. In all seriousness, about 20ish.

Kinda/sorta, I usually let the rain do that unless it absolutely gets dirty. The person below me thinks that Guy Smiley is a cool gameshow host.

Not necessarily peaked with Detroit. Overall he wasn't bad in his few years after in St. Louis until he tanked midway last seaeson and Craig Mason just took a stranglehold the #1 position soon thereafter. Let's not forget he was in an All-Star game recently. Obviously not the end-of-all-end things to determine if a goalie is good/great or not, but he didn't make the All-Star game by mistakes or bad numbers at the time.

Dont eat a cheeseburger before the physical Rob! In all seriousness, I hope he does well there.

I think plenty of people cannot stand Pitt right now, rightly/wrongly, fair/unfair.

What consititutes a real vs. fake network? And how did the NHL know that this debacle between Versus and DirecTV was supposed to happen a few seasons ago, a year ago, much less 3-4 months ago? It's not about Versus being a good/bad network, Versus being on ESPN to reach more viewers. It's about Versus and DirecTV disagreeing on terms, nothing more or less.

Michigan certainly hasn't shown they are a fraud so far... Will they go 11-0/12-0? Probably not, but I think they are "back" in a sense, more/less. Since the college I went to is not in the BCS big conferences, Who do you think has the best chances out of the non-BCS conferences to crack it if they remain undefeated? The first 3 are the best candidates right now IMO. Also keep in mind if one makes it in over another or my school gets shunned out, I probably won't be going apes**t or campaigning or whatever, because the whole BCS/bowl process is pretty messed up, regardless of if you are in a "big" conference or not. Boise State - So far they beat Oregon and ranked in the top 5. WAC conference though which they play in, pretty weak perceptively this year. Not really the most challenging non-conference schedule outside of Oregon (Bowling Green, UC Davis, Tulsa which is respectable). TCU (Go Frogs, my school ) - Currently around #10 in the rankings. A great non-conference win at Clemson, another win on the road at the ACC in Virginia (even though they're probably going to be down this year). Other non-conference games include Texas State (I-AA, won) and SMU (should be able to win without too much difficulty). Mountain West Confernece that they are in had a great year last year and is tougher than the WAc, C-USA etc. traditionally. Still have to play BYU which should be in/around the top 25 still, and possibly the same for Utah. Houston - Great wins so far at Oklahoma State when they were in the top 10 and Texas Tech, two solid Big 12 schools. C-USA isn't the strongest, but they also still have to go on the road to play an improved Mississippi State team in the SEC even though MSU isn't usually at the top of that conference. Still have to play respectable opponents like Tulsa and Southern Miss. As much as I got to support my school, I think Houston has the inside track right now if they keep winning and are 3rd in rankings between these schools right now. Two great wins against Big 12 schools that are usually win a lot more than they lose, and they are close to the top-10 right now. Plus they would have to win an extra game playing in the C-USA Championship like the MAC does with splitting their schools up in divisions. I think BYU still has an outside shot despite the big loss to Jekyll-Hyde Florida State - if all the top 3 falter at some point. They have a big win against Oklahoma (which appears to be back in form as well) and are still in the Top 25. They also play in the MWC and will deal with TCU when they are ranked in all likelihood and the same with Utah.

To say that he was awful 100% of the time when he was here is a big bit of a stretch and untrue. I remember in 2002 him and Duchesne did quite well playing that 3rd line defensive role. Who was the guy that caused distraction to Irbe to help in Larionov's 3 OT goal in game 3 of the SCF? Dandenault. Of course all of that is forgetton somehow.
