So far all that has been establishes is that goons or enforcers or whatever the heck you call these guys probably do not or definitely don't prevent the 1st cheapshot from happening. However, if they step in to fight take accountability or whatever you wanna call it, they may prevent future cheap shots from happening, but that is not a guarantee. That is all that has ever been established in here, and that's all that ever will be established in here. Nobody on either side will ever change each other's minds about this. Not in this thread/debate, not in the 1000th discussion on this whenever it may be. Some people will still think this team is soft for whatever reasons they have justified or not, others will think this team is fine/tough still. You know why? Because there have been so many fricken variations of the definiton of a goon, enforcer, bum, soft player, grinder, butt-kisser, hiney worshiper, snail smeller, you name it that have been established in here. Nobody's mind is going to change.

Saying and implying things like the season will be a wash, this is the worst offseason ever, Holland is a moron, Williams is more useless than a slow moving tortise triggers these reactions when they are so easy to avoid. Not saying you specifically have done this but there have been plenty of examples similar to these lately. And none of these are even remotely true and can easily be avoided. To me that's not discussion or debate. It's just loud yelling. If Williams was so awful he wouldn't be in the NHL right now. And Holland is still one of the best GMs in the business. And the Wings are still one of the best teams in the league despite this signing or what Jason Williams does or does not do. Williams isn't the ideal signing but my god, you would've though another Hiroshima went off given the reaction in here. I understand frustration and emotion but you get some reactions that show people acting like a bunch of spoiled whiney kids. It's not that bad.

Indeed. If Williams slacks on the ice or still has "emotional baggage" like people are saying in here (never really paid attention to anything regarding that honestly so I don't know) or doesn't play Babcock's style of hockey, Babcock will limit his time or he won't play. Should be as simple as that. In the meantime, the Wings lost some scoring, Williams replaces that void to some degree given the availability of players out there and the cap and Wings money issues. This signing isn't as bad as people are getting all whiney about. The ideal signing? Not really. But given the Wings situation right now, it isn't that bad of a move.

So why do you think he will be a failure then? And who do we trade him for? And you can't use bag of pucks as an answer. It has to be other players or draft picks.

If a good trade can be worked out where all parties are satisfied, I'm all for it. But how do you know his season is going to be a failure before it even starts?

Good post. I'll give a slight nod to Samuelsson. How quickly people forget though that Williams before he had injury problems (?) or missed time in Chicago, he was producing close to a point per game his first full season there, or something close to it. Not trying to hype up Williams as we know his limitations and it's more than likely a depth move as you said, but he's not as bad as plenty in here want to dramatize.

Holland signs an average player to an average salary and the majority of members here absolutely have lost their minds. The Red Wings have won 4 Cups in 12 years. Made the playoffs in roughly 15 straight years. Holland is not rebuilding and signing a so-so guy isn't going to make or break this year. This forum needs to stop losing it's mind and get a grip.
