Bingo. Which is my point more or less. Naming rights, $$$$$'s more often than not will dictate and arena name before any favorite player of a fan.

I skipped over this one before since I was too easily and pitifuly amused about typing a word on a calculator that 11-year old kids think is funny, so I aplogize. I don't know what divinity is, so I have not successfuly made it before. I have on DVD, but not too much, would probably get booed if I shared the lack of time I've dedicated to this in here. The person below me has had a bubble gum bubble go completely out of control and splatter their whole face before.

Ain't that the truth. If stalking Sydney Crosby was an acutal paying job, many LGWers would be rich. It wouldn't surprise me over the next few months if I see a thread that says "Newsflash: Just like every other person in this country, Sidney Crosby complains about things every now and then. And, like all other males, he puts on his pants one leg at a time!" I'm indifferent on Crosby, neither love him or hate him. The amount of attention he gets from media doesn't bother me whatosever, I either think they are good stories or just tune them out. But the amount of attention people give him, at least in here, for the most mundane things in a negative fashion like whining or walking down the street or chewing bubble gum at 12:53pm on October 18th gets to be absurd sometimes when everybody else and their 10-year old nephew does the same thing. Again, I'm no Sid Slappie, I don't think he needs to be with protective rubber gloves or like a lost puppy dog, but the amount of attention he gets for the most miniscule things or 1000 ways to talk negative about somebody is just as much as the normal mainstream media attention he gets, or worse.

Guys like Bobby Orr, Mark Messier, Ray Borque were pretty important as well. How come they don't have arenas named after them?
-
The 8 works just as well to get the "word" across. The person below me wanders how Cookie Monster doesn't get fat from eating all those cookies and pastries and, well, pretty much everything else.

The people that decided to name an arena after him. Must be kinda an important guy to do so I'd re-consider my wanker comment there...

Bettman said Avery's remark offended him as a parent.

I understand where you are coming from. I rarely join in the Bettman hate club as sometimes people go off the deep end with it. If a majority of owners/business are happy with what the commissioner of the league is doing, the commissioner is doing his job. I don't think we've read anything at all lately that says that a majority of the owners are displeased with Bettman. Bettman has to please them first and foremost. Does that mean us as fans are getting a raw deal? Perhaps, depending on how you look at it. Sure, trying to please your fans is a part of the business, but that isn't the most important thing on Bettman's list. Making sure the owners and businesses are happy and running is his first goal. -
It almost never snows down here so that is irrelevant to me. I've only seen live snow down in my neck of the woods maybe 4-5 times in my life (once which was last Thursday actually, was quite fun). The person below me has typed 5319009 on a calculator before and laughed at what it spelled out when turning the calculator upside down.

Not even talking about Avery here but in regards to swearing on the ice/playing surface as opposed to other places. For me personally, I'm usually a very calm person aware of my surroundings and rarely will lose control of my emotions if it's a normal environment like when I'm at work or just watching TV or eating dinner or whatever, even watching sports I generally am quiet. Sure I might accidently blurb out a curse word in a conversation perhaps, but in normal times I really watch what I say or don't purposefully act/talk like a jackass as to not rub people the wrong way or get them offended. When I played competitive sport, in the heat of the moment my blood would boil if I messed up something I could control or do better at. That often led to yelling out some explicatives every now and then. That's just the way I was when I messed up. I rarely ever got into the trash talking bit. In the heat of the moment, you sometimes lose control of your emotions. In the locker room after a game is over or during an interview, unless interviewers are just intentionally yanking your chain over and over again to the point of annoyance, to me that isn't a "heat of the moment" scenario and you need to be a little better aware of saying things that you later might regret, whether you shuold've kept your foot in your mouth or offended people or whatever. It's impossible to be a mind-reader like that all the time of course, but again it's about having some awareness of your surroundings. Don't know if the atmosphere playing in sports compared to others makes this right or wrong, just my personal experiences I think. -
Kinda. Don't get me wrong I was chuckling as well watching him try to get his lingo across. How could you not laught at it? It was damned funny. I'm just trying to give a perspective outside the land of Red Wings bias and Red Wings vs. Avalanche and "AVALANCHE BAD!" I make fun of myself all the time, but seems like some people in here are piling on the guy a bit too much putting him down like they mean it and like he was the Poltergeist's son or something. Was just a goofy guy during the interview, nothing more or less, and I'd buy him a beer or two in spite of how weird he came off.

Done my X-mas shopping thank god! :carrot:  Soon, but my hair is almost always short that getting haircuts is kinda a silly concept, but I like my appearance with the clean/short look, plus I don't have to use a comb as much. The person below me never stayed within the lines when coloring in the coloring book.

I did not vote, specifically because my response could easily yield me answering all the selections. If it is in terms of needing a "new" or "modernized" facelift, without question the Wings could use a new arena. You are spot on with the economy probably increasing chances of preventing any new immediate arena construction though. However, I have been fortunate to come watch a small amount of games at JLA in my lifetime, and there isn't a bad seat in the house. True the arena look overall is fairly boring to me, but I go to sporting events to watch the games first and foremost, not initially admire how nice the stadium or arena is. Just give me a halfway decent seat to watch the game, urinals and restrooms that work, and a comfortable arena setting and I'm usually a happy guy. I'm not hard to please and don't need to be thoroughly entertained. I didn't go to many Stars games when I was in college in the Dallas area, but I did see a few in Reunion Arena where they used to play. Nothing fancy about the arena, just a basic bowl shape with 1 upper/lower deck similar to JLA, but there was never a bad seat in the house, and since everything was pretty compact the arena could get loud very quick.

on the last two posts. When competitive juices flow especially in sports, you're going to yap more toward the other people. Sometimes it spills in the locker room, sometimes it'll spill into media. Stuff that is yapped about on the playing surface usually just stays there, unfortunately if stuff is yapped about in the locker room or media that might suggest even an inkling of controversy, 9 times out of 10 the media will overdramatize the situation to get readers or listeners, whether the controversy is obvious or miniscule. And on a side note, while I don't really join in the ZOMG BETTMAN IS AN IDIOT hate, he does kinda looks like Mr. Bean. -
I blew out my ACL playing basketball and had reconstructive surgery on it about 4 1/2 years ago. And that was just pickup basketball, nowhere close to even professional or even amateur or the collegiate level. I haven't played any contact sports since then either. However, we've (at least me) never had the bodies or the capabilities to play even close to a level towards being a professional. Everybody has to give it up at some point of course but Forsberg's a professional athlete, at least I'm not. There's a good bit of difference there.

For the people giving the Slovak dude a lot of crap, let me pick your brains with a little curveball and see if I'm at all in the ballpark or if this is just totally irrelevant. Yes the guy was goofy during the interview. Yes he was easy to poke fun at. I give the guy kudos though for getting the nerve and courage to talk on national television. I'd probably slur my words a bit myself if I was on TV or having an on-the-spot interview. People in here have voiced their displeasure plenty of times in the past that the NHL isn't popular or that there aren't enough fans out there, more or less. Well? The goofy Slovak became a fan. His reasons seem a bit silly, yes, but bottom line is those silly reasons made him a pretty dedicated fan, and he likes being a fan of his team and hockey and the NHL. More power to him. I became a fan of the Red Wings because they were "good" and I wasn't old enough to understand hockey back in the 80s (when they were struggling more often than not) when I was just a kid and due to being raised in the South and living here most of my life, does that make me silly or a bad bandwagoner because I joined them when they were getting better? Well, I rarely miss a game now either. Are my reasons for liking the Red Wings or hockey "silly"? Certainly doesn't matter to me how people become fans. The more fans, the merrier.

I totally agree that a line has to be drawn somewhere regarding this, but sloppy seconds is a little too early to draw the line I think, there is plenty worse that can be said. And, as much as it is silly to get overhyped over "sloppy seconds" when much worse can be said, I still do understand how it could be offensive to parents or degrading of women. -
I don't share in the utter Kopecky hate that many display on here, but I'm all for a shakeup in getting Helm or Downey some more PT if it can get him to improve his play.

I was never really dressed funny as a kid. More often than not I've just always worn simple, bland clothing or designs. The person below me thinks that Joe Cool is cooler than the Red Baron.

I'm not going down the whole Avery got suspended debate. All I'm going to say with that is if Avery continued his shenanigans, it would eventually come up to bite him in the rear in a suspension, and it did. Being suspended for saying sloppy seconds might be silly, but again consider the guy, it is Sean Avery. I wasn't surprised nor disappointed nor outraged or anything like that. I'm leaving that where it is. I can understand where Bettman is coming from, but kids are going to eventually find out about stuff - dirty words, naughty magazines, smoking, etc. And findign out about these kinda things is a lot more easier today than it was years/decades ago. It is up to the parents to explain to their children about these things. To think something like this was not going to happen is unrealistic. -
It's not up to NHL execs higher-ups to decide Forseberg's fate. That is up to Forsberg himself as well as any team that wants to take a chance on him. Nobody had much beef when Yzerman played just a miniscule amount of late regular season games recovering from a major knee injury + playoff games which are more important. McCarty came out of retirement more/less last season, barely played any regular season, played a good bit of the playoffs last season and was able to contribute to a degree given his situation/lack of time, etc. Not many people here seem to have been griping about that either. If you aren't fit to play from day 1 or you are injured, you just can't play or you're injured, it's that simple sometimes. I highly doubt Forseberg is just kicking back on a comforter slinging 6-packs down and just deciding, "I want to play again." For better/worse, the man just can't catch any luck by not being 100% healthy for a consistent period lately. But not too long ago, when he was healthy, he was still one of the better forwards out there. If he feels he can return to that level whenever he gets completely healthy, more power to him. It is up to whatever franchise wants to take a chance on him then.

Was funny stuff to me trying to understand it. I thought the dude was cool and a good sport trying to articulate share what he was saying. Whatever draws fans into the game for whatever team it is, I'm all for it.
