Hašek looks to return (that didn't take long)
SouthernWingsFan replied to shadow47's topic in General
Who are we to tell players when to quit? If players feel like they still got gas in the tank physically and can contribute like they are used to, play for as long as you can. I know I'd try to do the same thing. It is up to the business/franchises to tell these guys "NO" if they want to keep coming back or come back during the midseason, not the players themselves or the fans. -
Waivers. Waivers waivers waivers. I'll say it again...waivers. As much as I'd like to see Helm up here more, it will better suit him to play nearly 20 minutes a night every night in Grand Rapids, vs. just 6-7 minutes here especially since he doesn't have to worry about getting claimed by a team off WAIVERS if he gets sent back down to the minors, correct me if I am wrong. Kopecky is out of waiver options I am assuming. And the vitol spewed towards him is a bit over the top. And no, I don't think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but he played 3rd/4th line minutes even before he got injured during the regular season. You're 3rd/4th line guys aren't going to get noticed as much as your 1st/2nd liners unless ZOMG HE FIGHTS EVERY 2 GAMES. Kopecky wasn't great, he was far from terrible though. Again, way over the top with the disliking of him. I'll reserve any major judgement towards him in time and see how he responds from his ACL injury.

It isn't a typo, the NHL doesn't change one's jersey number if they switch teams until that player plays in a game with his new team, assuming he has a different jersey number. Conklin wore #35 in Pittsburgh, they haven't changed his jersey number even though Howard isn't officially on the roster right now. My guess is Conklin will take #29 since Howard already wears #35 when he's not in Grand Rapids.

A good live version of... 311 - Paradise I love their old stuff so much better than their newer stuff (not that the new stuff is bad). Their first album is my favorite, without question.

If you all want to watch Appalachian State try to do the unthinkable again and beat another ranked team to start the season, the LSU-App. State game has been moved to 11:00am ET tomorrow from the late afternoon now showing on ESPN Classic with the dangerous threat of Hurricane Gustav possibly coming here in a few days and the massive amounts of traffic and likely evacuations from around here this weekend. Former time/channel was 5:00pm ET and ESPN. To be honest, I wish they would just cancel the game completely until later this season. I love watching football and it is big down here obviously, but there are way too many things right now going on down here that are much more important than a football game.

Hašek looks to return (that didn't take long)
SouthernWingsFan replied to shadow47's topic in General
Why not, if he still thinks he has it and can keep in shape physically, give it a go so he doesn't question or regret whether he could have played some more years and years down the road. While I am definitely not even going to come close to expect it, imagine if he actually made the Czech Republic roster for the upcoming Winter Olympics. That'd be insane. -
If Chelios resigns, will Ericsson ever get the chance?
SouthernWingsFan replied to Phazon's topic in General
Waivers. Ericsson can play in Grand Rapids and come up/down without worrying about another team claiming him if/whenever he gets sent back down to Grand Rapids if I am not mistaken. As much as I'd like to see him play on the Wings more, it would do him better playing every night in the AHL vs. every few games on the Red Wings for just 5-10 minutes a game if everybody on the Wings defensive core is healthy. And who are we and to tell people when they should step down? If an athlete still thinks he has enough gas left in the tank physically to where he's not an impedement to a team and he think he can still contribute significantly, play for as long as you can so there is no regret and you ask yourself, "Could I have done it a little more?" Chelios will be playing for peanuts if he re-signs, he's not going to be playing every night, he's not "holding anybody back" on the defensive core. This was made crystal clear to him immediately after the Wings won the Cup this year. There's not a whole lot of harm if he comes back given the scenarios. -
NHL is definitely losing a good guy on the ice. Absolutely love the way Barnes played hard and intense.
-
Of course Penguins fans would be doing this if they won since it would be a PENGUINS forum... People here praise the Red Wings are celebrating that the Red Wings won the Cup and some are bashing the Penguins for better/worse, since this is a RED WINGS forum...

Crosby isn't a goaltender, so this argument is moot. Apples and oranges comparison. While Lidstrom is certainly capable of putting up solid offensive numbers for a defensemen, his primary job is to play DEFENSE. And Lidstrom isn't a winger either. So I don't know how Lidstrom comes into play here as a defenseman when you are trying to justify a duo of wingers against another duo of wingers.

Bertuzzi, Cammalleri Happy To Be Back In Canada
SouthernWingsFan replied to SouthernWingsFan's topic in General
You can probably say the same thing about Red Wing fans over the past 10 years or so when they've been consistently solid, or lay that claim for pretty much any team if they get a solid winning streak going. Attendance numbers go up when teams win more often than not, they go down when teams lose more often than not. That's natural. What you are talking about isn't necessarily bad. -
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=247636&...os=topStory_nhl Will be interesting to see if Bertuzzi can get some consistency going in his game ever again and if Calgary fans will completely open up to him due to his past emotional "baggage". And I'll just get it out of the way in case the "incident" comes up in this thread on where I stand. Bertuzzi is certainly at fault for what he did, but so are plenty of other people directly involved in it and I'm not going to say or mean that Bertuzzi is a slimeball or dirtbag or P.O.S. or whatever other explicatives for what he did. I just don't want to hear about the "incident" again and hope that everybody involved can eventually move on from it and be content moving on from it.

Jimi Hendrix - Red House http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkxP5gXYb2U My favorite Jimi Hendrix song, without question. (and :hippie: to a lesser extent even though I am not one )

Good for him, good for the Avs, good for the league. Not to knock other athletes, but professional sports needs more Joe Sakics in the world. If he thinks he still has enough gas left in the tank to give it a go physically to where he can contribute like he's used to, play as long as possible so there's no questions or regets to wander "Do I still have it?"

The future of the Wings goaltending after this upcoming season... Curtis Joseph Dominik Hasek Manny Legace That'll be fun.

Speaking English in U.S. is important obviously, no need to explain... However I don't think this should be the end-of-all end solutions to play or not to play on the LPGA Tour, I don't think it should even be too important of a requirement. Heck, hire a translator if you can't grapple the English language in time to deal with fans or the media. Even further, why would this be such a huge requirement. Golf, probably more than any other sport, is a "Me me me, I, I, I". sport where there really is no "team", outside of you and your caddy. If you and your caddy can best understand each other in Russian or sign language or Sandskrit, use Russian or sign language or Sandskrit. If this is a requirement, then there should be requirements for playing professionally in any country regardless of where it is then. You want to play professional sports in Brazil, learn to speak Portuguese. If you want to play in Spain, speak Spanish. If you want to speak in Russia, speak Russian then. And so on, and so forth.

USA Today: Red Wings are obvious #1, but...
SouthernWingsFan replied to Shutemdown's topic in General
While it is definitely not impossible to miss the playoffs completely after being in the SCF the year before (New Jersey is a recent example of this...2000 and 2001 I think?), they have two of the best offensive players in the game today. They have a good young up-and-coming goaltender. They lost some personnel, yes, but it's not like Pittsburgh is re-building. I know we recently played them in a playoff series and people hate the attention that Crosby and Malkin get so it probably makes people a bit more negatively biased towards Pitt and saying they aren't as good, but I doubt there's going to be much of a dropoff. They are probably going to be legit conteders to make another deep playoff run once again. -

While the Crosby vs. Ovechkin preference is debatable (and endless right now because anybody can make a valid case for either to be the best player in the league and I do not want to get into endless debates), what you quoted just shows the ridiculous bias a lot of people in here have against Crosby and Malkin because (1) they are talked about so much by media outlets in the NHL and (2) Detroit recently playing them in a playoff series. Same thing with Getzlaf and the Ducks to a smaller degree. Datsyuk's value is that high? Well hot damn, what are we waiting for?! Trade him now for 17 enforcers from Anaheim and Calgary? Get in done Kenny! No wait...

I'd be interested to hear the feedback from Chicagoians if he went back to the Blackhawks. This is thre first time I've read or heard about this, I thought Chelios would just eventually peter out in Detroit at some point in time (75 years old maybe? ), but this shouldn't be too shocking. He was a Blackhawk for a long time. If he wants to finish out there, more power to him and I wouldn't hold any grudges or ill will towards him whatsoever.

What makes the Red Wing's organization worth taking less money
SouthernWingsFan replied to RedWingsLaw's topic in General
I'm not trying to put down the Red Wings organization. In terms of how it is run and how they treat their players, it is second to none. I hate though how people use the word loosely or firmly to put down fans of other teams or other players and things like that just because they aren't as "classy" as what we think being a Red Wing fan or organization should be. I know it is a semantics thing but I don't like using the word and you know it has been used by plenty of people in here to say the Red Wings are just completely perfect...and other fans or players = bad. The Red Wings aren't oh so perfect 100% of the time even though they are a great organization, and other fans etc. aren't "classless" or idiots just because they are fans of another team like Nashville or Colorado or Los Angeles or whomever or just because they don't always stroke the Red Wings ego. -

What makes the Red Wing's organization worth taking less money
SouthernWingsFan replied to RedWingsLaw's topic in General
Quoted for fricken truth. As much as I like this board, it has made me hate to say or use the word class since people on here use it to put down fans or players of other teams while thinking the Red Wings players, fans, and/or the organization is oh so perfect. While the Red Wings organization is a damned good one and I like how the organization seems to focus on loyalty and keeping players here for longer than usual if the situation is right, I hate how the word is thrown around in here, it makes us sound like snobs and elitists at times, which is why I never use the word. I think Red Wings players often take more money to play here is because of the shoes and skates, Greektown Casino, the People Mover, and the chance to be on a Wheaties box. Sorry, can't think of any better material right now. *shrugs*
