More proof that Ovechkin is basically awesome
SouthernWingsFan replied to omnipotent_hudler's topic in General
I find the Crosby is overrated/Crosby whines/Crosby is a bad leader posts really interesting and amusing. First the whining part. Name me an NHL player that hasn't whined. Every athlete in pretty much any professional sport along with their mother has whined at some point in their careers. Even *gasp* Steve Yzerman whined sometimes. *prepares for hate responses* If Crosby was such a bad leader, he would've been stripped of his captaincy a long time ago, and it would've been the decision of the other players and the coach I'm betting. It has nothing to do with him being one of the main marketing campaigns in the NHL right now. If Crosby is overrated, what do you expect him to do, especially at 20 years old? Score 175 points a season? Sydney Crosby might have asked for the captaincy, but I'm betting he probably didn't ask to be the main face of the NHL. Given that he is only 20, has produced extremely solid numbers in his limited experience in the NHL so far, and initally came into the league with such a high amount of hype, I think so far in the grand scheme of things he has handled himself very well. The disdain towards Crosby in here I think is either... (1) people being jealous of him (2) just being sick and tired of him being marketed so much And I can understand the 2nd reason that I am guessing, to a certain degree. I wouldn't mind seeing the NHL promote more guys outside of Crosby and Ovechkin, but honestly it isn't going to change my viewing of the Red Wings or hockey one way or the other, and I highly doubt it will significantly affect people's viewing of it in here either of significant degree. Hyping Crosby this much doesn't bother me whatsoever, if it makes the game/league more popular, great. However, if Datsyuk or Zetterberg were hyped as much as Crosby, I highly doubt anybody in here would be complaining one iota. And not many people in here will probably say this, but I will. In a perfect world with no cap and the like, I am betting plenty of people would love to have Sydney Crosby on this team. There needs to be no explanation of how extremely talented he is. If you respond at me with the leadership/whining bit, understand that he probably wouldn't (at least initially) be captain for this team, and again he's only 20. And if you respond with him not PKing or being as good on defense, Babcock would whip his rear in shape to play better defense. -
Zetterberg is lazy and he sucks for not getting more visible in the Stanley Cup photo. Sorry, the obvious had to be stated...............

Manzel - Jump Street Bit of a weird funky tune, but decent nonetheless.

http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&a...rticleid=368820 Talks basically about the importance of not having one line capable of scoring everything, pairs of centers, etc. Mentioned specifically in tandem for Detroit... Zetterberg and Franzen Before anyone gets in a rut that Datsyuk isn't mentioned, I'm guessing it was the fact that more often than not Zetterberg and Datsyuk played together and the columnist tackled the article by mentioning centers for different lines.

Wonderfully stated and pretty much took the words out of my mouth more or less. It is just like giving a nickname to a stadium or things like the Big House in Ann Arbor, local fans down here calling New Orleans Arena "The Hive" for the NBA Hornets franchise down here, etc. Nothing more, nothing less. And kudos as well to lfd250 for her smart-allec, but 100% accurate remark.

Bettman Mr. Bean Bettman is far from my favorite, but the disliking of him gets beyond ridiculous and is overdramatized sometimes. I don't get into the overdramatizations directed towards his way. If the majority of NHL franchise owners are happy with what he's doing, he's not going to be forced to leave his post anytime soon. Hate to disappoint peple, but he has to satisfy the owners first. Fans do come into the equation in all of this obviously, but there is little/no direct correlation between Bettman having to please the fans first. If the owners are happy with him, he stays.

If I ever have a day with the Stanley Cup, I'm going to eat an ice cream sundae out of it. Who are you, who am I, and who are we to tell players and coaches and personnel how to spend their time with the Stanley Cup? They are smart enough people not to just intentionally "destroy" or "lose" it. I respectfully disagree with you and you are getting worked up over nothing.
-
Why? I highly doubt Zetterberg was worrying about how he looked in the pictures and where he exactly was going to be, I highly doubt any of them were considering they all were "distracted" celebrating. This is a matter of making too much of a big deal over nothing. I highly doubt Zetterberg and company thought it was a big deal, so this is nothing to get a panic attack over.

Some pretty nutty comments on the original/first posts quoted, and not in a good way. Here is how this idiot sees it, and this is a very uneducated opinion, so keep that in mind before you roast me. Size advantage = Iginla Hard shot advantage = Iginla Speed = Zetterberg Shot accuracy = Zettererg Hitting = Iginla Tenacity/hard work/grit = Zetterberg (I am biased obviously, but not much of an advantage, Iginla is far from a slouch) Defense = Zetterberg Honestly though I hate the comparisons like these simply for the reason of the idiotic posts/opinions originally quoted by the thread starter. Eventually you'll get made to be made stupid in things such as this. I just accept that both are great players in their own way, and that's fine for me as I don't feel the need to prove who is better than the other or my "hockey knowledge skills" (because honestly, I don't have that much knowledge).

I blame the terrorists for Zetterberg hiding in that picture.

Excellent pictures of both the new edition and the owner.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/stor...&id=3504426 By Scott Burnside, splitting them up by conferences. Some notables in my opinion... Western Conference...Edmonton 5th, Chicago 6th. Maybe I'm just not familiar with Edmonton's team, but I didn't hear or read of them making any huge impacts in free agency so far. And while they made an impressive run late to try to make the playoffs last season, that just goes to show you that you cannot slip up early. Chicago definitely improved their roster without question, but I'm just kinda in a wait-and-see mode with them to see if they'll definitely be a playoff threat. I'm just a bit surprised Burnside put them that high so early. Eastern Conference...New York Rangers 4th, Tampa Bay 8th. Just seemed to me that the Rangers have taken a step back so far this offseason. Again though, not all too familiar with their roster. Tampa Bay has definitely upped themselves so far, but like Chicago, I'm just waiting to see if they'll make any signficant jump to flirt with a playoff spot after they were all but out of the playoffs by mid-season last time (if I am somewhat accurate).

More proof that Ovechkin is basically awesome
SouthernWingsFan replied to omnipotent_hudler's topic in General
There is no truth to Crosby being overhyped. Is Ovechkin better than him? That is entirely subjective and you can lay 50 reasons why he's probably better, and another person can lay out 50 reasons why Crosby is probably better. It will be an endless debate and that is something I am not even going to waste my time even starting as I don't care that badly to figure out which of the two is better since they are both to of the best in the game today, and I'm fine leaving it at that. But to say Crosby has not lived up to the hype of being one of the best players in the game today like you originally said when... (1) He certainly has good numbers to suggest he's one of the best in the game today. (2) He's only 20. ...is ridiculously pre-mature. You and plenty of other people might like Ovechkin more because he's one of the best and is also funny, a smart-allec, a better personality on and off the ice, or whatever else. That's fine, I like Ovechkin in that type of way as well. That does not take away at all of how Crosby can produce on the ice and the hype that people give him to perhaps be one of the best in the league for years to come. It is justified. -

Hey I'm in the exact mode of thinking that you are in regarding this, you didn't even have to start with the statistics. Sorry if my other post in this thread suggested otherwise. Basically was responding to where one said Crosby hasn't lived up to the hype and I mentioned that he was only 20 years old. That is incredibly pre-mature to say that when he has plenty of years left in the NHL. The Eric Lindros bit I said just popped in my brain at the time, as he was one of the best guys in his prime but had injury problems and the like and never won a Cup, hence it being somewhat realistic to say he "underperformed" his career. But I am totally with you and will again stress like in my original post that I do not understand all the Crosby hate on here half the time (in a neutral time period when Det-Pitt aren't playing each other obviously). Blame all the media outlets and things like that for hyping him, not Crosby himself. He doesn't have to apologize to any one of us fans for being one of the better players in the game right now. And know this, if Datsyuk or Zetterberg were hyped to the max like Crosby is (and Ovechkin to a certain extent), I can bet you a lot of the responses will be something like... "Well he's a damned good player, he deserves to be recognized and hyped up." And there would not be one shred of ranting and complaining that Datsyuk or Zetterberg is so hyped up. Guaranteed. You know why? Cause he would be a RED WING. It is oh so bad for some athlete to have the majority of the media attention, much of it deserved because he is one of the best players in the game today, because he's on a different team? But if one of our own from our favorite team gets all the attention, it's all of a sudden all right? Convenient how that works. -
Shanahan looking to return next season
SouthernWingsFan replied to WingsallTheway's topic in General
I highly doubt he was worried about having his jersey retired at the time, or now. He felt it was time to move on at the time, he was part of the past instead of the Wings future. No hard feelings from anybody. -

SouthernWingsFan replied to omnipotent_hudler's topic in General
They are both in their early 20s. While Ovechkin has definitely lived up to the hype, Crosby has plenty of years left in him to "live up to the hype". I know he is focused on so much in the NHL, but the disliking or undervaluing of him by many on this board is hard to understand sometimes. He wouldn't have so much focus if reliable hockey sources as well as hockey fans didn't he wasn't one of the best in the game today. I know somebody will respond to me with Eric Lindros and how overall he probably was a "bust". Will Crosby do the same thing? Nobody knows, but to say he hasn't even lived up to the hype when he is only 20 years old is very pre-mature at best. -

ww12 and to anybody else if this helps... When I lost a lot of weight about 3 1/2 years ago going down from just under 180 to around 140 (also 5'7" myself) in about a span of 4 monthhs, I didn't follow any formal diet or rules from books, no calorie counting at all. I didn't go in with any specific goals or timetable to lose weight and get more fit, because I knew it would take a long time and a lot of dedication on my part in terms of exercise and dieting. I basically just went in with a general mindset to be patient with this all and lose weight. I don't know if it was just me being disciplined, or because it was my body/everybody's body is different (not trying to brag even though it sounds like I did), but not having any real specific expectations or goals to be a certain weight at a certain time really paid off for me as I didn't really feel much self-pressure and I actually enjoyed shredding pounds during the time. To sum it up during the time, I rarely ate fast food, I rarely drank beer and started drinking wine which is a slightly healthier option, I ate very little fried food and more grilled sandwiches and salads and the like, didn't snack as much, and completely gave up soft drinks which I rarely touch today. That along with a lot of hard cardio exercising and just being patient did the trick. Again I don't know if it was just me or my mindset or no formal rules/charts, or if everybody's body is different, but it worked in my instance.

While I haven't golfed in over a year, I played and was respectable at the sport for over 10 years and never got a hole-in-one all those years. I came close once on a par-3 of about 130 yards and sticked the ball right on the pin and it lipped out of the cup. I was pissed. A good round for me was shooting in the mid/upper 80s. And Ovechkin never plays golf before in his life and gets a hole-in-one while I could never get one in over 10 years? I smell a rat, but if this is true, I hate Ovechkin and he is a bastard. Very funny stuff.

While this is true he acquired him and that he was a physical prescence in the playoffs, he didn't "enforce" much. Again, enforcement happens very little or not at all in the playoffs. But his prescence definitely was felt, just not in the e-word way that I am sick of reading/typing about. I pretty much echo the balance sentiments as well as what Dabura said in his last long post. Enforcers are useful to a team and you need some good balance of skill guys, physical players/hitting, good goaltending, and enforcer type people. The Wings had a very solid balance of those this past season. In terms of importance/percentage of that type of balance though, enforcement to me isn't very high on that percentage, maybe 10% (remember 25% 4 ways = 100%). DISCLAIMER: That does not mean that I am against enforcers 100% alltogether. However the people who are on the extreme pro side of the issue are greatly blowing things out of proportion as Dabura said. Not so much that they want to see more "entertainment" or fights. That's fine, I got no problem with that and respect people's opinions who want more of that in a game. What is overblown is automatically thinking that just because you don't always fight or stand up for your teammates .00000001 seconds after an incident, you are automatically soft. Far from it and Detroit is not even close to a soft team. Also for the reason explained about like Kopecky or a marginal 4th liner that still has the POTENTIAL nonetheless to improve in all aspects of the game, not just throwing fists.
