Chicago County Comissioner Already Trying to Mix It Up
SouthernWingsFan replied to edicius's topic in General
I understand your stance and get where you are coming from. It's not "professional", but this is sports. Not in the sense or context that it generates revenue for the cities/state or from the business or money side, but from the "rivalry" obviously towards the cities not just in hockey, but in all sports I think. I still don't see it as anything more than just good-natured ribbing still, regardless of whether it is a governmental leader, CEO, or a 10-year old. I'm no mind reader and I've definitely been wrong about, well a lot in life, but I just don't see higher ups making too much of a big deal out of this. And being that is doesn't look like it errs on the side of governmental corruption or any direct impact on citizen tax dollars or morale, I wouldn't make it a big deal either. -
Sorry, with how nuts this thread has been, I wanted to lighten the mood up.

Chicago County Comissioner Already Trying to Mix It Up
SouthernWingsFan replied to edicius's topic in General
How is this oh so terrible people? I can think of hundreds of worse things to say or do other than "Detroit sucks" or "*insert your favorite team here* sucks" chant. And I am aware that some (not all as I hate generalizations) Chicago fans can be pretty big jerks. One of my cousins and her husband went up to Chicago two NFL seasons ago for the NFC Championship playoff game between the New Orleans Saints and Bears and they were treated very badly from what I heard, I saw people/pictures of Bears fans with signs saying more or less, "We're going to finish what Hurricane Katrina started", etc. However, I think it is a safe bet not all Bear fans or Chicagoians are like this. And I find it ironic that we are suggesting ways for Blackhawks and other fans to "properly" cheer when half the time Joe Louis Arena isn't quite the noisiest of all venues on a consistent basis throughout a season (I know I know, we cheer when it matters most and bring the support in the playoffs, business suits in the lower section argument, etc.). Further, like has been mentioned in this thread, if a leader of Michigan, or anybody for that manner who is a Red Wing fan, yelled out "Chicago sucks" or "Colorado sucks" or "Anaheim sucks" or "*insert other team name here* sucks", people here would be just giving him or her rounds of applause over and over again. I'm not a cheerleader type, nor am I one to get drunk before a game or just constantly be loud and yell explicatives towards other players or fans. I normally just watch the games intently and that's it. Unless though you are just acting like a total jackass constantly swearing up a storm or making yourself look like an idiot or offending others around you diminishing their game viewing experience, I'm not going to stop you from doing whatever or be bothered. I actually confronted a guy about this once though where he was just acting like a lunatic at a football game to where even fans of his team whom I were sitting around were pretty shocked at how over the top he was acting. The team usually isn't that good but they were actually taking my school to task this college football game and he was just yapping on about how the refs were against his team, "IF THERE WAS ANY JUSTICE IN THE WORLD," just obnoxious stuff he was ranting and bitching about and going on and on and on even though his team was up by around 25 points and going to win. I wasn't really pissed off or bitter or ranting that my team was getting destroyed, I rarely get like that during games and my team's bad play didn't set me off to respond to him. Him still acting like a lunatic after half the game was over when his team was dominating just got on my last nerve, along with fans of his team showing the same amazement, where I just had to tell him to calm down. I told him to enjoy the fact that his team was actually winning in convincing fashion, it shockingly worked as he kept quiet for the rest of the game. But there is plenty worse than chanting a team sucks and I hardly find that offensive, and I don't think it's a crime for other teams to cheer against Detroit or take jabs at them since they are always one of the best teams in the league right now. Just some friendly jabs, and nothing to make a giant deal out of or get angry at. This thread is being made out that saying a team sucks is a brand new concept. There isn't going to be a tea party anytime soon where Blackhawk fans will go to Wings fans, "By golly we are going to get you Red Wings! Let's have some more tea and crumpets! Jolly that sounds good! Look at how well we're getting along at the tea table!" Now, I get where some are coming from to where saying you suck makes you sound a little less mature. I understand that. However, I find the semi-serious or playful remark such as that much less annoying and less defining of "character" than the sports nut that is too serious or rants ridiculously against the other team to the point of bitterness or acting like a lunatic, kinda like how I laid out in my experience above with the idiot rambling fan. I might be in the minority but the idiot rambling fan here has less "character" or "class" to me. -
Seconded. There is a reason why Downey doesn't play top-line minutes. It is because he is good in the role that he is in as an agitator/4th liner and has little offensive upside. Let's leave it at that and be happy he does well in his role.

At least you made a challenging bet with two guys who know how to put up points. All depends on both of them staying healthy because it's a good bet they'll both, and this is at worst, put up at least 70 points. What if one of them gets injured, did both of you take that into consideration and is the bet null and void then?

Something I'm going to try to consistently incorporate into my workouts when I life weights is doing a few sets of pull-ups. I'm not a big person and my upper body strength is something to probably point and laugh at but even if you just do a set of three pull-ups more/less, you can really feel it on your biceps. And nobody can say I didn't do my part to be fit today. After lifting weights and the like early this morning for about 45 minutes, running a little over three miles late this afternoon, and working in my yard for close to an hour this evening, I've killed plenty of calories.

Yes. Every time. And if/when the Wings start to struggle into mediocrity, whenever that time might be, I still plan to watch them Yes. I never said there was any direct correlation between entertainment and losing. And if Datsyuk just cowered away from Roberts in that scenario, I have a strong hunch that people here would be calling him something that rhymes with wussy for not "standing up to Roberts". People act all disappointed that the players don't stand up for themselves and people here have been moaning about more accountability and toughness in this aspect to be added to the Red Wings. One solution to solve this problem: get an enforcer or a guy to play the role of enforcer. Problem solved for the most part as Aaron Downey filled that void. Another problem though: enforcers play very little or not at all in the playoffs, so in essence you have to have all players stand up for each other if there are scrums and the like, even your big scorers every now and then to show they want to win and won't take any crap from the opposition. In the one instance you laid out, Datsyuk did this, and it is not good all of a sudden? There's usually no "enforcer" to enforce or babysit in the playoffs, so Datsyuk and other players have to do their own dirty work then if need be. Datsyuk did this, and did it well.

I know! The horror, the horror! This is such a croc of s**t! Everybody and their father's brother's cousin's nephew's former roomate wants to play for the Detroit Red Wings! *end obnoxious rant/Spaceballs reference*

Why? What's oh so terrible about him? I'm not understanding your dislike for him. He's been a fringe NHL player who had roles, albeit small ones, with two Cup winning franchises two years in a row. Good for him that he at least made it to the NHL for more than just 3 games, and that he lucked out playing on two Cup winning teams, even if he didn't play as much. Plenty of people don't get in the NHL at all. I'm not surprised he left to try to find an opportunity for more playing time, wherever it was. Best of luck to Hartigan in the Latvian league.

Wonderfully stated, especially that last sentence in your first blurb being good for the NHL and hockey. Kudos also to what Yzer1999 said. Of course, plenty of people would be drooling all over the media if they gave the same amount of attention to guys like Datsyuk or Zetterberg as much as they do to Crosby, Malkin, or Ovechkin. Heaven forbid they hype young stars right now that'll probably have long careers in the NHL and it's oh so terrible, but it's convenient when the media is "good" or "credible" all of a sudden when they hype or overhype your favorite team or players, eh?

Gonad. Fedorov + Conklin + deVries = FECES!!!!!!!!!!!!! *shrugs* -
If this is the case, then you can make the same claim on just about any shot that was re-directed or deflected as those pucks have to somehow find their way to the net as well.

What's more important to you? Winning or being entertained? While I like being entertained, I don't get bored easily, so I'll take winning over entertainment every time. And other parts of hockey are "entertaining" outside of two people throwing hands with each other.

It's not always going to be all about the Red Wings like we all want. You know how much time is spent venting on how much attention Syndey Crosby gets, I think it's safe to say that we essentially want the same thing to happen for the Red Wings. More focus, more focus, more focus, FOCUS ON THE RED WINGS as much as possible dang blasted! It doesn't always work that way, and I agree it shouldn't work that way as well with such a giant marketing emphasis on Sydney Crosby and focus on players outside of him and Ovechkin. Well, we can't always get what we want. And, if winning the Stanley Cup was the standard to "deserving" to get the outdoor event, why didn't Anaheim get the event last year (let's assume that an outdoor ice event could realistically happen out there in terms of climate/outdoor temperatures even though it's probably slim-none to begin with). This forum would implode if the outdoor event would've been hosted in Anaheim as there would have been hundreds of vitol-spewed rants about the "MEAN DIRTY DUCKS". Why did Buffalo deserve the event then last year? Why not Pittsburgh? St. Louis? New York/Long Island? Minneapolis-St. Paul? Consider things more than just the hockey teams and how good or bad they might be. Chicago has a better economy than Detroit. Maybe they are just limiting their selections to just professional arena venues. I don't know their exact rhyme and reason in terms of picking the event. While it would definitely be fun to have it at a place like the Big House, we as fans are very spoiled since our team is consistently good year after year, thus some sense of entitlement comes in. I think it's a somewhat accurate guess that people in here might not like the New York Yankees and might say some of their fans act in a similar way for example, being part of a similar franchise that is fairly successful year in and year out. Well, some Wings fans act the same way whether it is justified or not. The Detroit Red Wings and Wings fans are not entitled to everything just because they are usually good or are an Original Six franchise. We can't always have everything we want. At least the Wings are playing in the event. Playing in it, even if it is on the road, is better than nothing.

Wrigley Field is a solid historical stadium. Yeah yeah I know, so is the Big House........... And it's not just an all about Detroit or all about Red Wings thing. It's about the Chicago Blackhawks as well. And it is about the NHL as well. Why the sense of entitlement or thought that the Detroit area "deserves" this game? Anyways, as much as I like attending sporting events live, I'm a cheap skate more often than not. I don't care what the event is, I'm not dishing out $100+ bucks to see a game live.

Yeah, I'd hate to be the guy who scored an insurance goal in a Cup Winning game. I'd hate to be the guy who scored a hat trick all in one period in a very important WCF game, and be the leading goal scorer in that entire series as well. What do you have against McCarty anyway? Did you lose a bet to him in a game of blackjack? Did he give you a swirlie when you all were kids? Make fun of your momma? Calling a person names makes you sound less credible and pretty immature. Nobody is overhyping McCarty in here, but to completely dismiss his importance in the Cups that he won is asinine.
