I say he wears the jersey of a mathematical forumula, like the depth of a triangle...B x W X H *shrugs*

Flipper, but that's a mere formality I think. He's just trying to measure his worth compared to other guys of his position with similar styles I think. But it's been well documented that he wants to remain a Wing I think and Holland will match any offer for him. Other than that, sign one/both of Downey and McCarty and the Wings are fully set I think. Even if the Wings don't do this, Holland has already hit a home run with these signings the past 2 days.

I haven't read any of the first pages in this thread so I apologize for re-hashing any points or stating a Captain Obvious post in advance... Filppula has said money isn't all that big an issue and he wants to stay with the Wings. Holland said he will match any offer for him. While I know this will probably contradict what I said in the first statement, Flipper I think is just seeing what his worth could be in future negotionating compared to similar-type players et al, seeing if he can get a few extra dollars here and there. Can certanily understand why he would do so. Not worried about his status and the like, I'm confident he'll be back.

That was then. He was solid in holding the fort down in Pittsburgh when Fleury was injured. Osgood gave up a few long soft goals in the past as well. Nobody seems to be griping about that now...
-
Definitely could be. I go back and forth between Avery. He's definitely improved offensively and the like esp. since going to New York from Denver, but he's still a basketcase at times. Just too much emotional baggage I think for any chance that I'd want him to be back on the Wings.

While stats are definitely true, they were expected to win/a top seed by plenty of people, nobody gave the New York Giants a snowball's chance in hell of winning the Super Bowl, as already stated. They had to win every playoff game on the road, and win a Super Bowl against an undefeated team, and with an inconsistent offense at best. They defined all odds and won it all. You have to give it to the Giants.

I'd be open to getting Fedorov or Bertuzzi back in reduced roles, around 3rd-line even strength and 2nd-line PP duties assuming they would take pay cuts. Fedorov can play the point on the PP still, Bertuzzi put up respectable numbers last season in Anaheim when he was healthy. Not by $4M a year standards obviously but still put up some stats, hence suggesting he takes a pay cut.

Wings out of picture for Sundin, Hossa, Rolston
SouthernWingsFan replied to Redwingsfan18's topic in General
I'm all for getting Hossa obviously, I'm even open to bringing Bertuzzi back in a lesser role/salary. My thinking right now though is the Wings have re-signed Stuart, so the defense is all but set, and goaltending is in good shape now with two good insurance policies in Conklin and Howard. It's not like the Wings are going to consistently go bone dry on offense, and defense/goaltending wins championships. If we get somebody on the offensive side, great, but I am thrilled at the Stuart re-signing and getting what appears to be a solid backup signing in Conklin. -
With this signing as well as Huet, two huge overpayments I think. That being said though, he will improve Chicago's defense, and goof for Campbell for being able to get that much money on the open market.

St. James: Sundin, Bertuzzi on radar, Rolston not
SouthernWingsFan replied to 40#1Fan's topic in General
Heck if Bertuzzi was willing to accept a pay cut and a lesser role on this team, 3rd line perhaps and some 2nd line power play time, I'd be open to bringing him back. He's not the power forward he was during the Vancouver days but he still put up decent numbers in Anaheim last year, though probably not justifiable for a $4M contract, hence taking a bit of a pay cut/lesser role. -
ZOMG TRADE DRAPER FOR TUCKER CAUSE DRAPER WILL WAIVE HIS NO TRADE CLAUSE TO GO BACK TO TORONTO. Well, to late for that (and just in case I need to clarify, I was never in support of the ridiculous first liner that appeared on here every now and then and yes I am being very sarcastic in this post)....

Capitals sign Jose Theodore to 2-year contract

And Avalanche fans in and around Denver are breathing a huge sigh of relief now I bet. -
Chicago signs Cristobal Huet $5.6M/yr 4 years
SouthernWingsFan replied to JayUp88's topic in General
Kinda what I was thinking as well. Are they really that desperate? Nothing against Huet (or I'm trying not to make it sound that way) but nearly $6 million for him just seems to be a gross overpayment. Kudos for him to get that much on the open market obviously, but still, not sure what Chicago was thinking paying big bucks for another goalie. Sure Khabibulin has underperformed overall since he's been to Chicago but as stated and quoted, the numbers paid for goalies here just don't really make much sense (*insert $8M dollar/Joseph-Hasek-Legace 2004 jokes here * ). -
Tampa Bay signs UFA goaltender Olaf Kolzig
SouthernWingsFan replied to Elshupacabra's topic in General
Nice signing and good insurace for Tampa Bay. Mike Smith looks to be an up-and-coming goaltender in this league and he could learn plenty from an experienced Kolzig. -
This is just one idiot's opinion, that idiot being me, but it creates some pretty healthy competition b/w Howard and Conklin for the backup job, hopefully no egos clashing. Also, Howard I think has one more year he can play in the minors without having to deal with waivers, so if that is the case I don't see much harm in him fine tuning his game even more one more time in the AHL. For a backup, Conklin has some experience to an extent with Pittsburgh and Edmonton. The signing was for pennies pretty much, debatable being a "steal" for backup status.
-
Stuart getting re-signed makes SWF a very happy man. I'm all for getting a top-6/2nd line winger, but it's not like the Wings offense is just struggling for goals, and defense/goaltending wins championships. Our defensive depth is set for next season now.

Katrina and the Waves - Walking on Sunshine Kinda ironic since I hate anything weather related that is named Katrina cause of a recent bitchy storm down here, and b/c waves and sunshine really don't mix well, but a good song nonetheless.

Mgmt said they were going to go after an experience middle/lower-tier goalie from the get go. Conklin is signed essentially for pennies, has played respectable in chunks with both Edmonton and Pittsburgh, and it is good depth move with Hasek retiring, and correct me if I am wrong Howard can play one more year in the minors without worrying about waivers. I'd like see Howard get some more time as well but there's nothing wrong with some healthy competition, and in terms of giving money for a backup goalie position, this is like a steal. I see no logical reason whatsoever to be upset with this signing.

First playoff year with the Wings while he was solid, he did let in some "sucky" goals. Not that the offense helped in out whatsoever. Second playoff year, very little in the terms of marginal department. Cool to see Joseph back in Toronto.

Kinda a spectator sport, but these networks also cover such things as Spelling Bees and dog contests and the like. That still doesn't change the fact that golf is still a sport, and you firstly said that it wasn't a sport at all.

I guess Brett Hull and Keith Tkachuk were never overweight and out of shape then? What about a fair share of offensive and defensive linemen being overweight and out of shape? I guess Scots must dislike golf. Sergio Garcia must not be a Spaniard all of a sudden even though he plays golf. Ernie Els, and a handful of other South Africans? Nah, they are just "pretending" to play the sport. I guess all the other major sports networks or Internet sites such as CBS.sportsline.com, Foxsports.com, SI.com, and even our beloved TSN.ca must be "pretending" to cover golf and have it among their major links to access SPORTS information then? It is a sport no matter how much you might not like it or understand the sport.

I've been curious for the longest time on this... I understand goalies choosing #1 when availabile/not retired of course, but how did it become generally standard for goalies to select their jersey numbers in the 30s? How come #29 is a standard goalie number every now and then as well? Any info/insight is appreciated.

That is about my level of excitement regarding this. In other words, I have thought of free agency very little. I'm more focused on the vacation I will be on starting Wednesday for nearly 5 days.
