ESPN takes shots at Detroit sports teams
SouthernWingsFan replied to hillbillywingsfan's topic in General
Why is it a shame? I like reading and watching sports from multiple networks and multiple sports sites. Reading stuff from ESPN.com, TSN.ca, SI.com, and CBS.sportsline.com is fun. Watching sports on ESPN, CBS, NBC, and FOX is fun as well. -
Interesting... Pretty much the few things I used my credit card for the past few days are now showing on my bank account, accept nothing whatsoever of filling out the form with the same credit card for the book one way or the other with the transaction accepted or denied, and I filled it out a few days ago. I'm gonna give it some more time, I'm a fairly patient person, but ugh just let me know one way or the other on stuff like this. Even if the transaction is denied at least I would know, then I'll just order it another way.

May your grandmother rest in peace. At least she went out the right way, after a long and I am assuming mostly healthy life given she made it through 9 decades. I hope I can somehow get to that age of living as well before my time is up.

With everything in general just being so expensive now, I barely go out to eat during weekdays/work, I just eat in at work more often than not and all I eat are frozen tv-dinner type stuff. During a normal weekday if I consume more than 800 - 900 calories of breakfast/lunch/dinner, that is A LOT for me. I never miss meals but me not eating giant portions of food during the week cancels out my spoardic exercising lately in terms of staying the same weight more/less.

McLellan to be named Sharks' head coach
SouthernWingsFan replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Much congrats to McClellan! -
Same with me. It said that the form was submitted successfully, but I haven't gotten any confirmation e-mail/messages saying that an order is processing or whatever, no charge yet on my bank statement online, nothing. Though my last few days of activity with my credit card haven't shown up on my bank statements either, so I'm going to give it a few more days then possibly get in contact with them.

I liked Markov. If he wanted to come back for a lower price than what he made before, why not? However I think it is safe to say that is slim-none in happening since he left to play for more money in Russia. I don't think it's much of a "bridges have been burned" scenario to where he snubbed Detroit or stabbed the Wings in the back, far from it, but if he took more money to play in a different continent, what makes you think he would take an even bigger pay cut to return to the NHL?

I am with you sir! Thought I'd give this thread a nudge. With the NHL playoffs over and me not having a sports team to root for thoroughly until football starts in September, I'm going to try to re-commit myself. Not so much that I have any weight problems, I just like to exercise and the like and I need to get back at it more on a consistent basis. Other than a couple of work-related trips out of town this summer, nothing outside of my normal routine should really hold me back from being able to exercise a lot this summer unless something unexpected arises. I'm basically going to try to commit myself to lifting weights 4 times a week, and running 3 - 4 miles/cycling class 4 times a week. Weekends, I'm going to try to do one lengthy bike ride.

http://www.abita.com/brew/amber.html This below is an extremely good brand of Abita beer and I'm probably going to get a pack during my next grocery run. I never really liked Purple Haze all that much, too sweet. This weekend might be a good one to stop at the Abita Brewery Pub not too far from where I live.

ESPN takes shots at Detroit sports teams

And also, unfotunately, that opinions can sometimes be like a**holes, as we've all been guilty of this at some point. When I saw the general title of this thread, I didn't even waste time clicking the link to the article as I probably knew (or know) what it is going to be about.........all right most of your sports teams are respectable, but your town overall is a craphole and you have no economy. Am I off base with what I think he said (I still haven't bothered to open the link)? I can personally attest to being in/around Detroit a few times. There are definitely some not-so-great parts of the area, but I've seen plenty of decent ones as well. You can say the same thing about pretty much EVERY METROPOLITAN AREA. As for sports teams/towns, Detroit is up there I think as one of the best sports towns in this country, along with Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Dallas I think. What you think is the best out of those bunch or if you think I'm a looney for suggesting the other cities, have at it, I don't really care to compare which city is best/worst or undeserving of being in there. My main points are enjoy your teams and enjoy that pretty much year in and year out you have a great sports city and focus on that while the overall economy may stink and parts of the region may be in shambles, you live there (assuming you want to live there) b/c it's home, it gives you a sense of comfort and you enjoy living there more often than not and are willing to deal with negative stuff to remain there. -
Red Wings and Babcock agree to three year contract

It is slim-none that Fedorov gets his number retired.

Logic can be a scary thing sometimes. It is somply amazing how when people just obsessively hate somebody that just about every time it clouds judgement in some form. If you (not you specifically NFM as you can probably tell) think that Lilja solely and completely cost the Wings the 2006-07 season or game 5 of the WCF, you need to lay off the paint stripper. Did his muffed pass hurt? Without question. How about Franzen's failed clearing attempt late in that game though? Why does that get a pass? How about Lidstrom (of all people /sarcasm) putting his stick in the way to deflect the shot past Hasek which tied the game 1-1 late? Why does Lidstrom get a free pass then?

Game...........................BLOUSES.

Unless you are a big fan of one or the other teams in a championship series, people in the general population/people who have little or no emotional or financial stake in the games like the underdog. Plain and simple as that.

Higher All Time Ranking: Yzerman or Lidstrom?
SouthernWingsFan replied to GMRwings1983's topic in General
In terms of overall talent or skills in both the offensive and defenseive parts of the game, I'd had to give a slight edge to Lidstrom. In terms of overall health, Lidstrom. In terms of overall leadership, it might not be fair to compare since Lidstrom has only been a captain for 2 years, but nobody is going to ever come close to touching Yzerman in this regard. They have or are both some of the best players to play their positions regardless, and Lidstrom being better than Yzerman IMO in some aspects and vice versa should not take away from how damned good both guys are on and off the ice. -

Lidstrom and Osgood, do they get their numbers retired?
SouthernWingsFan replied to SFwingsfan's topic in General
Lidstrom shouldn't be any question, yes. Osgood I'm not so sure yet, but I'd love to see it happen. I'm not an "Osgood doubter" or anything like that, but getting your jersey retired means you are up with some pretty damn special company. If he keeps winning more often than not and finishes his career in Detroit and can win a 3rd Cup as a starter, then there shouldn't be any question. Part of me says there shouldn't be much of a question about it now. -
Overdramatize much, last 2 posters?

Should Buffalo retire #39 in Hasek's honor? Yes. Should Detroit retire #39 in Hasek's honor? No.

He had only 2 games of regular season time and no playoff experience. I think the only way he gets a roster spot if he just completely kicks butt in training camp or impresses so much in Grand Rapids or during a call-up. He'll get his time on the Wings before long, but I doubt it happens anytime soon during the beginning of next season.

Brad Stuart is only 28 years old, I wouldn't exactly call him an old-timer. Chelios, as is the plan so far, will either be a 7th/8th d-man. Like it or not, he's coming back. Lilja I'm indifferent on. His brainfarts annoy me, but as a 5th or 6th defenseman he still bring some good intangibles (decent PKer and solid shot blocker). To the topic at hand, I think that Quincey might look to be more of a stay-at-home d-man (Grand Rapid fans please help me out and correct me if I am wrong, I don't follow minors at all), and Meech is more of the offensive-minded defenseman. I was very impressed with how Meech played with added responsibilities with all the injuries to the defensemen durin a chunk of the season. If it were any other team, I'd say Quincey due to the fact that you can never have enough physical stay-at-home defensemen. But with Kronwall throwing big hits on occassion and Stuart hopefully coming back, the physical aspect has stepped up some and this is a team where puck possession and a good outlet pass out of your zone from defensemen are so important. I think Meech is well suited for that.

This is a pretty touchy subject for me, largely because (1) I have been a sports official for basketball and soccer games, granted at a much lower level, and even at that lower level/speed/tempo it is still a damned hard job to do and (2) as much as Wings fans in general want to deny this, people in here have bitched and moaned about officiating in here "going against the Wings" on multiple occassions. As an example, like most I couldn't believe that a hooking call wasn't called on Pitt late in the Cup clinching game when it happened around 10 seconds left. It seemed pretty obvious. On the flip side to when Datsyuk was hooked there, I think the penalty he got in the previous playoff year vs. Anaheim Game 5 which helped contribue to an OT loss was a pretty good "phantom hook". It will take a lot, and I do mean A WHOLE LOT, to make me believe that officials are intentionally against the Red Wings or that there is some kind of officiating conspiracy or referees intentionally wanting to extend series longer. That's just paranoia coming from fans when they think people are absolutely in love with the other team or just worrying way too much that things may go against our team. Both the Red Wings and the Penguins got away with some calls, and both got a fair amount of Power Plays in the series to try to capitalize on. Officials are human. They're going to make mistakes. They are going to make calls that are questionable or miss stuff. I made my fair share of bad calls or no-calls when I officiated basketball and soccer game at a fairly fast tempo. There's just so much to keep up with and decide and you often have to make choices in the matter of a split second. No official is out to get the Red Wings or any other team. Yes, even Dan O'Hallaran isn't out to intentionally get the Red Wings. My whole point to all this "kerfuffle", as Osgood would say, is that officials try to do their best but there seems to be a fair amount of inconsistency in how officials overall judge penalties and the like. What needs to be done is all of them to have meetings and get rid of this inconsistency as much as possbile for next season and beyond.

I think trying to re-sign Stuart might play a role in Lilja coming back, but seriously people I think it's safe to say at most he'll be a #5 or #6 d-man. Yes his brainfarts are annoying but he's a decent penalty killer and shot blocker. Before people think I am too much on the mushrooms with that statement, that statement has come straight from players or coaches on multiple occassions. Do I wish he could be a little more physical? Sure, but I still think the pros he can bring AS A #5 OR #6 DEFENSEMEN as I stated about are still important to this team. If Lilja signs somewhere else for a better opportunity and more minutes, it definitely won't kill me and more power to him. I'd like to see Quincey or Meech or Ericsson get more time. But Holland and Wings mgmt know what they are doing in terms of offering guys the right kinda cash and they already said they are willing to re-sign Lilja but only if the two parties can agree on something reasonable. They won't overpay. I wouldn't mind seeing Lilja come back for around $1M - $1.25M at most.

The song "Jump Around" by House of Pain is coming to mind right now with that picture. Beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZZADbubu0Y
