Wings GM says Chris Chelios likely to be back next year
SouthernWingsFan replied to zombiewing's topic in General
Meh, I'm indifferent. I want to see young guys get a chance but Chelios is such a freak of nature physically with the way he keeps in shape that I don't mind seeing him back in his role as one of the last regular d-men night in and out. -
And in other news, Britney Spears is nuts.

I'd rest everyone vs Blues games this week...
SouthernWingsFan replied to Majsheppard's topic in General
There are no guarantees in the playoffs, I don't care if you are the 1 seed or the 8 seed. None of this picking your poision stuff. Two seasons ago the bottom seeds all beat the top seeds in the first round of the playoffs. I don't care who the opponent is, the first round will be a dangerous one of the Wings don't take them serious enough. I find little sense in your line of thought here. A lot of the guys that have been injured for decent stretches are going to be the ones that will be playing significant time in the playoffs in all likelihood, and you want to rest them (whenever they get healthy) as well as current Wings who are healthy? I know line combos often change but these guys need to get playing again soon and there needs to be some settlement of line combinations and such so people can get comfortable playing together. And I find it hypocritical that we give Nashville fans crap for instructions on "how to cheer" when a lot of the times you could hear a penny drop in Joe Louis Arena. -
If he ever puts on some weight and develops a good beer belly, he'd seriously look like Ron Jeremy.

It's a bit hard to be disappointed in a team that has made postseason play 17 years in a row. I know we want Cup every year and are disappointed if a season ends too early, but there are some franchises that have barely been in the playoffs, one not at all in Columbus. We should feel pretty blessed to be fans of a team that have been extremely successful more often than not during this time period.

I think if they'd browse this site and a lot of responses, they'd be laughing their butts off at how obnoxious some of them are.

Wings look toward playoffs... as favourites.
SouthernWingsFan replied to Majsheppard's topic in General
Where, ANYWHERE in his post, was he acting with a gloom-and-doom attitude that the Wings were even done before the postseason even started? I'm still searching for it... The doom-gloom posts and posters get on my nerves on end, but constantly waving your happy flags around like this is just as annoying, especially when people, and this member in this instance, aren't posting anything close towards the sky falling. Chill out and lighten up. -
Odds are we'll be playing one of these 4 teams...
SouthernWingsFan replied to BeeRYCE's topic in General
Don't pick your poison. I'm going to say it yet again, I can bet the majority were thrilled to face Edmonton in 2005-06 because they played a "similar" style to the Wings. Well, look what happened, and they played a completely "different" style.... No series is going to be a walk in the park, I don't care who the opponent is. -
Games now equal, San Jose is closing in
SouthernWingsFan replied to YoungGuns1340's topic in General
Seeding matters very little in the playoffs now. 2005-06 attests to that as 5-8 beat 1-4 in every series in the first round of the WC. Would I like to see the Wings finish first? Of course, but they are in the playoffs already and the fact that they are still going to be playing hockey after the beginning of April before the regular season has even ended yet is fine with me. -
Yikes. While that definitely should've been stopped obviously, we've seen goofy shots from deep every now and then. I can easily recall three from goofy bounces involved in Detroit games. Langenbrunner on Osgood against Dallas in the playoffs in 1998, Lidstrom on Cloutier in the playoffs in 2002, and Datsyuk's goofy knuckleball goal from the blueline at St. Louis early this season against Legace. Tommy Salo's bad goal against Belarus probably deserves mentioning as well in the 2002 Olympics. They are definitely few and far between but it does occur.

If Washington is able to get in the playoffs, Oveckin is my candidate.

Wings & Babcock working out a contract
SouthernWingsFan replied to HockeyCrazy3033's topic in General
Name other coaches in this league that have managed the league's top defense in goals against, as well as having two (not one but TWO) goaltenders that have consistently had around the best GAA's in the league for most of this season. And I want Babcock here as long as possible. As evidence in last year's playoffs, he seems to bring a tough as nails, never quit and work hard approach to the teams he coaches. They may not win all the physical or one-on-one battles, but I absolutely love that he demands a high effort night in and night out. -
I don't care who starts. Both of them have shown this season to be more than capable of doing their part. Sometimes though I wish neither would start so people here can stop spitting their ridiculous vitol against one or the other goalie.
-
I think it is a more of a case of Datsyuk's biggest fans on here sounding so shocked that people think he's not a slam dunk to win it and getting overhyped over the slighest bit of criticism thrown towards his way. It is hard to deny his play on the ice, no doubt about it, and I certainly don't need a book report on how +/- or any other stat is determined in considering the Selke trophy, but when you aren't the top, or one of the top penalty killers on your team or considered a shutdown forward FIRST, the odds go somewhat against you. It will not be a travesty if he doesn't win it, he'll still be the same old Datsyuk creating plays on offense with the occasional steal of the puck.
-
Or an Eastern Conference team possibly outside of Pitt for that matter...
-
Not in the least little bit. I thought it'd be a stretch (and successful) if he got 15, especially since he started off so slowly this year.

While Chris Simon is spot on with his disappointment, I don't know if this would matter much or not but his choice of words didn't help the matter. Specifically saying that he didn't get treated fairly, like he is the victim in this whole ordeal. I think more progress/awareness to higher ups would've been made if he said that no matter who the player is, such an act of what he/Pronger did should have a very, very strong consequence, but this is just one dork's opinion. If I was Simon, I'd definitely consider filing a lawsuit about unfair treatment though. I don't care how bad or "intentional" his stomp might have been over Pronger's (or not perhaps), you don't just step on somebody. That is as low as it gets.

Assuming and hoping that everyone is healthy soon, here is what I would like to see happen, but the odds of the lines staying like this all the time are pretty slim obviously. Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom Franzen-Filppula-Cleary Hudler-Kopecky-Samuelsson Drake-Draper-Maltby Downey-McCarty toss-up for next spot I pick Drake over the other two b/c he's been playing very well lately I think, McCarty is going to be an unknown with how he'll be after a long layoff, and I'd like to see Downey out there some if the right situation presents itself if the Wings are getting pushed around too much. Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Lilja-Chelios Lebda/Meech/Ericsson toss-up for 7th spot Hasek-Osgood (indifferent on who starts as long as one of the goalies just doesn't stink up the joint towards the playoffs consistently) PPs... Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom.....Lidstrom-Rafalski Any combination of Franzen-Cleary-Filppula-Hudler-Samuelsson.....Kronwall-Stuart (Samuelsson as a "backup" point-man, I still tolerate him there )
-
Fair enough as I'm not really familiar with Chicago's personnel in-depth. My only other reasoning why he is still on the point is Babcock likes having a right-handed shot out there most times, much like Williams last year.
-
Injuries to Cleary, Holmstrom, Draper, and Downey prevent that. I know Draper and Downey have la lot less to do in terms of the scoring department but my point is if the Wings are healthy and have 4 lines consistently rolling, there'd be a better chance of Datsyuk-Zetterberg together.
-
Samuelsson plays on the PP because Coach Babcock puts him out there, and apparently trusts him. And with Jason Williams...he also plays the point of a PP in Chicago as well, not just in his career with the Wings. Maybe the coaches know a bit more than we do about these two players?

Early Predictions Wings out in First Round
SouthernWingsFan replied to chrisdetroit's topic in General
It's called a prediciton people. People make predictions all the time. Some people predicted we would be upset in the first round against Vancouver in 2002. This is nothing to get your panties in a bunch over. -
Incredibly hypocritical that Simon gets 30 and Pronger only gets 8 when they are both definitely "repeat offenders" in terms of suspensions. I wander if Simon will speak out any more regarding this. Oh well, I'll guess I'll be content with at least they did SOMETHING about this.
-
I think Simon is just echoing the majority of opinions of fans of the hypocrisy that might be coming, nothing more or less. I highly doubt there is any indications from him to say, "Woe is me, feel sorry for me because I got 30 games." I think, hopefully at least, Simon realizes what he did was wrong and he's in the process of moving on from it. I'll say again from my viewpoint that I just want fair justice, nothing more or less. I don't intentionally want somebody to go out and injure Pronger (although he's going to eventually get what is coming to him if he keeps some of his antics up), I don't want him thrown off a cliff, or anything like that even though this latest incident has finally caused me to lose a good bit of respect for his questionable stuff (have usually been willing somewhat to give him benefit of the doubt when it comes to his play or the disliking of him in here). Just fair justice. And it seems pretty obvious the Pronger/Simon incidents are similar in nature. So if Pronger doesn't get suspended for a fair chunk of games, I will be very disappointed in the higher ups in the league, not just because its OMG CHRIS PRONGER. Anything less than 10 games, and I think that is generous to an extent, will be a disappointment. I hope I am completely wrong of the potential hypocrisy in this situation.
