I'd rather see goalie equipment get shrinked as opposed to making nets bigger. That being said though, I think it is really stupid how people give guys like Giguere s**t for his equipment. Does the equipment help? Without question, to a certain degree. Would he be terrible without the big equipment? No. He's still a solid goaltender and saying otherwise is just plain dumb. As long as they play within the rules, equipment and everything else, I don't see why there should be such a giant uproar like there is on here at times concerning this. If this is a problem and people want to fix it, reducet the equipment size then. I don't see why athletes and fans regarding this have to make this so hard.

And how about we don't intentionally take runs at anybody? DISCLAIMER: No I'm not trying to advocate being a coward and not playing a physical game. There's absolutely no need to just start crap though in a game for the sake of starting it. That includes taking runs at people, especially star players/players that are well-respected throughout the league.

Hasn't really done too much on the statsheet in the major categories, but I know I'm not alone in seeing him increase his level of play lately. Much more physical and picking up the juice in his legs as well. Hopefully he can keep this up. Kopecky for his recent play. :beerbuddy:

Very few people wanted to actually trade him, just from perhaps a minute few posters who act like dumb-a**es in regards to him.

Not quite back yet, but playoff matchups are where rivalries are really established I think. As much as I think people here go extremely off the deep end focusing on the Ducks sometimes, it's pretty impossible to deny that the water is a little warmer when the Wings-Ducks play, esp. from their last two regular season games.

Downey certainly did his part with the limited ice time he got tonight.

I normally don't comment too much in-depth in game day threads, but plenty to talk about in this one, and I apologize for probably re-stating the same stuff 3025 times. Was pretty surprised at this outcome. No, I'm not a doom and gloomer type, but given what has happened lately with a 6-game losing streak, your defense playing bad overall in that span, and your best player/leader and best d-man in the league going down with injury, the odds were not going to be good I thought. Glad I was definitely wrong. I don't know what was more surprising...that the Wings played so sound defensively after Lidstrom got injured, or that the Avalanche had almost no jump esp. after Lidstrom's injury. You'd think with Detroit being on a 6-game losing streak, and with just 5 defensemen, they would be attacking like crazy. Also it was the 2nd day of a back-to-backer for Detroit. Sometimes the obvious responses or odds don't just quite add up. And in this case, the odds not adding up was good tonight.

Lidstrom's injury isn't too serious (it seems)... The Wings snap a 6-game skid... They absolutely schooled their opponent this evening on defense WITHOUT Lidstrom... I definitely want Lidstrom back ASAP obviously but the way they played defense tonight without him for the majority of the game made me smile very much.

Fair enough. And I've definitely seen people question Downey's prescence before to a small degree. December/mid-season was a time where he wasn't making as much of a dent as he did earlier in the season I think. Still though, he's not going to be under a big microscope as much as I outlined above with less playing time and such. People definitely aren't "picking" on him by any stretch of the imagination though. Especially compared to other guys.

Some of the original suggestions I cut out as I either don't have an opinion on it or don't know enough about the rule/suggestion. 1 min penalties during regular season OT - Indifferent. Think it's fine now but would entertain a change. high-sticking penalties and whether it should remain an automatic four-minute penalty for drawing blood - Fine as is. instigator - Eliminate it, makes the players more accountable for their actions, brings fighting back in the game some more. examining the NHL Players' Association's idea of an 84-game schedule - If this gets every team to play each other at least once, I am all for it. the idea that players who are traded near the trade deadline cannot re-join his old team for a minimum of one year - Initially against it. Just seems like a clamp is being put on a player for doing what he wants to do. Not too familar with this kinda scenario though so if anybody can teach me some more, would appreciate it. whether hand passes should be disallowed in the defensive zone - Fine as is. whether breaking a stick on a player should be an automatic slashing penalty - Yes. The size of goalie equipment and bigger nets - No to bigger nets. If people want equipment to be reduced, fine, but I'm tired of people whining about somebody's equipment being too big if that player isn't breaking any rules. five shooters instead of three during shootouts - Wouldn't kill me if it stayed at 3, but I like the idea of 5. whether a player that was still in the penalty box at the end of overtime should be ineligible for the shootout - Actually kinda like this suggestion.

They are professionals, they know what they have to do to snap out of it, especially such a group of veteran players. The losing streak stinks but no point in me worrying about it or losing any sleep, I have no control over it. They are still going to make the playoffs barring a major disaster. I'll start showing plenty of worry/concern if that time comes then if they are facing elimination. Until then they got plenty of time to fix this and get team chemistry back now/after the trade deadline.

All of us, whether we are on either extreme (i.e. hate all bashing or wanting to suggest a handful of trade scenarios) need to find a happy medium to get along. Life is definitely not peachy clean in here with a 6-game losing streak obviously. I certainly don't mind reading/hearing about such things as trade scenarios or why certain players are struggling. It's a sports forum, it'll happen. What I don't take seriously is the 1-liners, whether they are a joke or not, yelling "OMG HE SUCKS!" or "OH MY GOD HE'S WORSE THAN A BAG OF PUCKS!" without giving any explanation or reason why. Personal hatred of a player. I understand why that is most of the time, it's just something I don't feel like doing (i.e. Sammy/Lilja, Osgood of late for some posters). Only thing I try to ask for is be objective and reasonable if you dislike some player or some thing about the game. Just like the Rolling Stones song though, "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Ah well, life could be worse at least...

Nobody on the team has seemed to do their job to the best of their abilities lately, including Downey, and including favorite whipping boys of the week on this forum. The reasons why Downey doesn't get ripped on as much is because... (1) He is the "enforcer-type" that many people here have always wanted. Whether you think he is effective doing that, you be the judge, but he does fit that mold to whatever extent you want to subject him to. (2) He doesn't play all that much a game to really deserve over-the-top criticism I think. The reason(s) why Samuelsson and Hudler are whipping boys (as of late at least) is because they should be in a more prominent role than Downey and expected to do a little more and produce, and they haven't lately. It may not be fair, but that's the lay of the land to me whether some like it or not. I will rarely, if ever, participate in over-the-top bashing being a drama queen like some in here saying so and so is useless and so forth. If that's the case, I guess Samuelsson's 9 goals and Hudler's 11 goals this year just don't count for whatever reason. If that's the case, they wouldn't be in the NHL. For some people, hey that's the way they vent frustrations or anger. That's just not my cup of whiskey. Nor will I ever go overboard (in a serious manner)acting like I want to hump somebody's leg, which is what many people have done this season in Downey's case this season (along with other players as well). We can debate how much more important some players are vs. others in terms of how much/little ice time they get until we are blue in the face and have drunk all the beer in the country of Ireland, but as of right now very few of the players on the Wings are doing their jobs as good as they can from the looks of this 6-game losing streak.

I'm currently listening to some pretty catchy music from the old video game, Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Some of these tunes would make for some solid workout music. And listening to this stuff is making me contemplate to get another Sega Genesis because these games were awesome in the 90s.
