Hell yeah, and I have been contemplating going to an early round playoff game if scheduling works out and I can fly up just for a weekend. This helps the cause. -
Well the sooner they start the sooner they'll get done...

What do you think the problem is for our current slump?
SouthernWingsFan replied to Lady in REd's topic in General
The heck with that, I say Tootsie Pops. *shrugs* -
Waiver rules if I'm not mistaken although I might be mixing the players up. Meech could be claimed off waivers and can't really go down to the minors anymore I think ("conditioning stint" was an exception somehow, somebody else can better clarify that than me). Quincey can still go down to Grand Rapids (assuming he was up with the Wings) without clearing waivers, but he'd be doing no good being a #7 d-man with little/no time. Hence him playing in Grand Rapids all season. Meech hasn't been overly spectacular, but hasn't done all that much to kill the Wings or play himself out of the depth lineup. I don't mind keeping him up. He's not getting any higher than #7 d-man anyways this season once everyone is healthy.

What do you think the problem is for our current slump?

They haven't been eating their Wheaties. So, from the smart-allec/trying to make a joke response, I hope everybody gets that it is not time to start worrying. They are making the playoffs, and unless they start playing like District 5 they are going to be the top seed. And all teams, I don't care how good or bad you are, go through bad slumps. Main problem during the current losing streak is bad skating/turnovers, but it happens to every team at some point in time once again. No need to over-worry and take this stuff too seriously, it doesn't help anything and all it does is give unnecessary heartburn and frustration. -
It was said immediately after you made this thread, but I'm pretty much going to repeat it just to screwdrive it into your brain. This is the same defense more/less that helped the Wings go deep into the Western Conference Finals, and if not for a few bad bounces, the Stanley Cup Finals. Rafalski was inserted for Schneider. Once Kronwall comes back that makes them get more depth. This same d-core is going to lead to "another" first round playoff exit when this defensive core hasn't even had a first round exit to begin with? Way to think before posting there...

Versus also broadcasts college football games just about every weekend in season, and on some Thursday evenings, for the Big 12, Pac 10, and Mountain West Conferences. They also have broadcasted a very limited amount of college basketball games from the Mountain West Conference (my alma mater is from the MWC hence knowing a little more details about it ). I could care less what station the games come on. Just be on somewhere. It could be on the Cartoon Network for all I care. That being said, I like it on VS. I don't mind seeing it back on ESPN. The more hockey the better. True, ESPN overall I think is like MTV is to music and KFC is to chicken (stolen from the legendary comic Lewis Black), but that doesn't bother me one bit. I watch ESPN for live in-game coverage. Commentary/highlights are just a bonus to me. I do think though that the reactions towards ESPN, genereally speaking, go way off the deep end in here sometimes.

Yeah he's a trip at about 4 1/2 years old and way too smart. Dinosaurs was a great fricken show. I'd go further and post a few more Dinosaur clips from YouTube that I've seen, but that would hijack the thread.

Me and my nephew hanging out around the beginning parts/route of a Mardi Gras parade a few weekends ago. As you can probably tell, he desperately needs a haircut.

Feel free to merge mods if necessary. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic.../802120363/1128 I know the time around the trade deadline period is exciting, and sometimes people just want to see trade activity for the mere satisfaction of not getting bored, but I think this read puts the Wings situation in a decent perspective, especially what I have put in the quote sections. I especially like what was said that even though Detroit picked up Bertuzzi at the deadline, there was no real major news-shattering trades IMO, versus Nashville and Atlanta trades which didn't help them go deep at all in the playoffs. And this roster is much like last year's roster which went deep in the playoffs despite perception that they were going to get their butts handed to them by overly physical teams in San Jose, Calgary, and Anaheim. They probably won't outhit you, but they will not quit and back down, despite this recent losing streak. I'm all for making the team better, but it's not like much with the team is just completely broken. This team doesn't need much and they don't need to oversell the farm to get what they want. I'd be all for a big centerman like Sundin to play 2nd line or Rob Blake to fill the gap on the PP or 2nd defensive unit as I think he could still bring a physical game as well, but if it's going to require giving up a good bit of the current makeup of the team which has helped them win more often than not this season, I don't want to do it that badly or just for the sake of doing something to make it "exciting".

Nice, real supportive there. :nonono: A bit late but I finally sent my message, thanks for posting this thread!

Ain't that the truth. Holland is just in jail with some fans, which is pretty sad. He goes out and makes a deal, and you think that it would (1) satisfy the fans who want a trade to happen just for the sake of it happening and (2) satisfy the grit/toughness slappies, espeically on this board. Bertuzzi's health was a bit questionable, but for giving up JUST 1 unproven draft pick, I think it was worth the risk if Bertuzzi got healthy as he has the size obviously and has shown what he is capable of in spurts this season. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose in the trade game. Holland lost this one, but it was worth the risk. It's a shame some people can't ever seem to be satisifed.

The homer call could possibly be a good thing
SouthernWingsFan replied to WingMachine91's topic in General
I'm no conspiracy theorist type person and I won't go to the extreme the Bettman "has it out" against some teams in the NHL, but unfortunately I don't think this bad call will have a significant effect on anything down the road, although I hope I am wrong. It was a bad call, but they happen in just about every game in every sport, so for better/worse we just have to deal with it. It's unfair, yes, but I doubt it will change much. -
For who? And would it be a fairly even trade for all parties?

Reheated Wings: Osgood sparks Detroit while sharing time with Hasek
SouthernWingsFan posted a topic in General
I fear this becoming a goalie-debate war thread, but I'll take the risk as this was a pretty neat little article. Probably obvious and predictable for most, but good for a quick skim. :goalie1: Osgood + :goalie2: Hasek = A great goaltending tandem http://www.sportsline.com/nhl/story/10628857 -
I think I get what you are saying, but if that's the case why even shoot at all? Is it worth Cleary even going in front of the net to get hurt then? What about Shanahan in 2001 in the playoffs against the Kings blocking that slapper that messed his ankle/foot up, should he have not sacrificed his body at all then? I guess I shouldn't have tried to block that guy's shot when I tore my ACL up years and years ago in a pick-up basketball game and we collided. Samuelsson should still continue to shoot (like the coach suggests he does), Cleary should still play his game and go to the front of the net when possible, Shanahan was going to sacrafice his body on the play every time 100 times, and I was going to do the same thing 100 times trying to block/disrupt the guy's shot on defense. I understand Samuelsson is a whipping boy in here so it is to be expected that he takes more flack than usual whether it is justified or not, and I understand we are all upset with Cleary being out for an extended time period (myself included), but I'm still going to say that for some members in here to sling dirt and get on his case this badly for this situation is just really low and immature. I highly doubt Samuelsson woke up Saturday and said, "You know what, I'm going to intentionally just injure one of my teammates by shooting a puck full speed at his face." That's ridiculous. Accidents happen in every sport.

No doubt about it, I initially didn't even think about the fact that there was very little discussion on reviewing the "interference". Esp. around the end of a game, you absolutely make sure to dot your lower case j's on such instances, with time left on the clock, etc. I made this point in the Double Standard thread as well in regards to this situation. Again I don't think it should have been called, but in the end if you are going to call it, fine, but go all out in calling it. If Holmstrom "interfered", give him a minor penalty. No ticky tacky stuff where he interfered enough to disallow a goal, but not enough to get 2:00. Perhaps though the issue more is that his skate was barely in the crease. Who knows...
-
I cannot comment specifically on Kunitz/the Ducks alone since I don't watch the Ducks all that much if he screens goaltenders a lot of plays around the crease etc., and I watched the first two periods of the game while out getting some food at a sports bar so there was no sound so I didn't really understand his incident until just a while ago, but with these two instances specifically it was a pretty bad double standard indeed. And what's just as mind boggling on the "no-goal" with Holmstrom's "interference" was that there was no penalty called on him if I'm not mistaken. I don't think the call should have been made in the first place obviously, but if you're going to call something like that, all right, just call it all the way. Give him a penalty for interference then.

Before people throw at me, my ONLY defense for the guy is that I have officiated sporting events at high levels in basketball and soccer. Definitely not professional, just college league stuff so not even NCAA, but still, you have a lot of guys who were athletes in high school etc. etc. My ONLY defense for him is that it's pretty hard to see all the nooks and crannies of a game in any sport when you are right on the playing surface in the middle of all the action. I certainly made my share of bad calls when I was a referee years and years ago. It's a lot easier to see the stuff going on when you are in the stands I think. So, at the very least just try to understand it from the officials' side. Nevertheless he made a BAD call at the end there, and I hope he realizes he goofed up bigtime.

Why after a rough patch of games do members in here want to completely dismantle the team? Especially a team that has taken care of business more often than not the entire season, and will go into the playoffs as a high seed? And you know what? This team has had a 3-game losing streak already this year, and have managed to come through that just fine. All teams, I don't care how good or bad you are, go through rough patches. Why do people keep fighting the goalie tandem that Detroit currently has? Hasek is still extremely capable despite his "old age", Osgood is having one of his best seasons, either one of them can be a very capable starter in the playoffs. There's no point in talking about obtaining Roberto Luongo. He's untouchable for at least the next few years to Vancouver, and again why are people fighting the goalie tandem? It's the best 1-2 punch of goaltending in the NHL right now. And I am very content on having Osgood re-signed over the next few years. As for switching Euros to North American players, who do you suggest? What would we have to give up then? This team does not need a major overhaul completely getting rid of most of the current team. This is the same roster, for the most part, that went deep in the WC finals and if not for some bad bounces, had a good chance to play in the Stanley Cup Finals. This is the same team that did not get their butts handed to them "physically" by "physical" teams in San Jose, Calgary, and Anaheim. They are not going to just outhit you out of the building but it should be obvious by now that the Wings will be in games through a combination of skill/skating and hard work and not backing down. It happened last playoffs and I don't see why they can't do it again this postseason. They just a guy or two for scoring depth on a 2nd/3rd line, and possible a low-depth d-man. That's it. The Wings still have it going good so far in the grand scheme of things up to this point in the season. Enough knee-jerk overreactions when every team in the NHL struggles at some point.
