Death, taxes and Wings success unavoidable
SouthernWingsFan replied to TheLegend19's topic in General
Wait? Death is unavoidable for me?! It's Saturday morning, I'm just relaxing and enjoying breakfast and going to enjoy the day, and now I have to find this out?! I'm not very depressed......... -
As Bluto from Animal House infamously said, "NOTHING IS OVER UNTIL WE DECIDE IT IS! WAS IT OVER WHEN THE GERMANS BOMBED PEARL HARBOR?!" So, there's a long ways to go with the all-star voting and all that stuff. He's all but in, in all likelihood.

Holland to start talks with Ozzie for a multi year extension
SouthernWingsFan replied to HockeyCrazy3033's topic in General
I too am also a fan of BOTH goalies. wingswillwincup... The reason(s) why the Holland/company might want to re-sign Osgood includes, but is not limited to... A franchise believing in loyalty towards athletes and off-the-ice employees... Osgood personally sacraficing to remain a Red Wing because he enjoys it in Detroit, when he probably could make more money and play a lot more for plenty of other franchises... His play early this season, and the stats he's accumlated in a fairly consistent basis over his career in a quiet fashion... Whether you/I/anybody else think he is "Hall of Fame worthy" or any of that is ENTIRELY SUBJECTIVE, but he didn't accumulate wins and good stats by mistake. Was it just him getting wins in his career? Of course not, but you can make the same argument for any goaltender out there, even the great ones like Hasek, Brodeur, Roy, etc. etc. EVERY GOALIE needs a good supporting cast, I don't care how good/bad the goalie might be. Perfect example was CuJo in 2003-04 playoffs. He played out of his mind against Calgary but had ALMOST ZERO offensive help. Now, overall in his career, has Osgood been on the same level as Brodeur/Roy/Hasek? I'd strongly say nay there. But those are some damned good 'tenders, and Osgood is far from a slouch. He's not going to be a guy stealing 50 games a season for a team, but he is still very capable and always has been. Especially this year, Osgood has proven that he is still starting material. You don't have to look far. I'm no stats nerd, but only 2 losses in 15 games and a GAA under 1.75 for a guy who was or is supposed to be the "backup" (current 'tending situation is more like 1A/1B right now, not starter and backup role) says plenty of positive things, such as "HEY, I CAN STILL BE AN EFFECTIVE STARTER!" I don't think he can keep this incredibly pace up, he'll lost a game/two in a row at some point, but unless his play/work ethic just falls in the crapper, Osgood (and Hasek) will, very few times, be the sole reason of the Wings losing their games this season, despite how retardeldly anal people are about goaltenders in here. Assuming Hasek retires this year, I'm all for bringing Osgood back to be starter grooming Howard for the future. Osgood wants to be with the Wings, and he's more than proven that he's still got it. -

Well that depends what you did, as some of those things look to be more "inappropriate" than others.

Inappropriate to ask for autographs? Probably not. Inapproriate to try to mug them because they are rich, or give them giant bear hugs or slobbery kisses? I'd say yes. *shrugs*

While more Americans/Canadiens on the team could possibly make more of an impact to "relate" to, I'd hardly think it'd be that significant of a difference to put fannies in the stands. Reason being even though guys like Yzerman and Shanahan were two of the most recognizable faces with the Wings in their recent history obviously, this team in recent years has had a lot of European players, the organization scouts in Europe plenty, and JLA was constatnly sold out until last year, still with a lot of European born players. In recent past... Fedorov Larionov Fischer Kozlov Olassoun Eriksson Fetisov And a fair amount of others that have played on this franchise while the arena was selling out in recent memory.

If Bettman stepped down as commissioner....
SouthernWingsFan replied to CAredwingsfan91's topic in General
George W. Bush, or a lump of coal. In all seriousness, not all problems are the fault of Gary Bettman in spite of the many OMG BETTMAN IS A DUMBIE SCHMUCK BLOCKHEAD DOOFUS posts we might see in here or in other places, but with that being said, from an overall fan perspective, I just don't get him, he seems to live in deniability of everything that could be a possible road block, like everything in the NHL is hunky dory. While I don't pay that much attention to the business side of the league, from what I've seen/read in the past though, most owners love him. I just wish I could be in the shoes of an owner of an NHL franchise for a day (1) because I'd make lots of money in one day, more than I'd probably make in a year , but for tihs particular reason/thread (2) to try to really understand why the owners really like him. I don't get it. -
No major injury for Maltby; Draper back around Christmas
SouthernWingsFan replied to 40#1Fan's topic in General
Good on both accounts. I'd definitely like to see Draper back sooner, but even without the two best forwards that kill penalties for the Wings, they are still quite a**-kicking shorthanded while they are actually..................you guessed it, SHORTHANDED! What can I say, I'm such a wonderful comedian....or something. No need to rush either of them back earlier than necessary, the Wings can afford the luxury of giving them extra time by taking care of business more often than not this season while they were both healthy, and while they've been out currently. -

Kevin Hodson In all seriousness, Brendan Shanahan in his '96-'97 form. He was simply outstanding that year.

He's had some brainfarts here and there, but it's not like he's just completely stinking up the joint out there. He hasn't been as bad defensively, overal, as some past/present Wings in their careers, i.e. Schnedier/Lilja if I unfortnately play the comparison game. Not trying to dog on Lilja (like he was mercilessly dogged on his first two season before lastplayoffs) or change the subject around, but hopefully I am being understood here. Also, to re-emphasize it's hard/unfair to compare him to Lidstrom, as well as coming into a new system from normally defensive-minded New Jersey. It's a legit concern to an extent, but he's not getting benched anytime soon and, again, hasn't just been downright awful by any stretch of the imagination. Hopefully he'll right some of his brainfarts soon. Rafalski

As tempting as it is to do, please don't give "haters" or an anti-goalie fan club an excuse to come into this thread so the 700th installment of Goalie Wars results. I don't know if this was your intention or not, but seeing posts that bait people to do such things is almost as annoying and frustrating as seeing biased garbage from an anti-Hasek/Osgood or anti-goalie of the week fan club. Two wrongs don't make a right, especially in this instance. :nonono: Can we please, all of us, just for once be happy for both of our goaltenders that we have that can still play at a high level despite both being "old" and can we please be happy that Hasek is showing signs of progress of getting out of his rut? *Runs towards cabinet and looks at dishes and contemplates breaking them over my head to knock me out and resolve me of this goalie war/anti-Osgood/anti-Hasek crap*

It'd be sweet for the NHL to have the best of both worlds IMO - that being keeping coverage with VS and getting back on the shnide with ESPN at the same time. Not realistic to me in my opinion. Before I divulge further, I'm not one that's really hard to please. I don't particually pay attention to on-ice analysis, commentary, and all that stuff, I'm just interested in the game, I'm interested in the game. Just give me decent coverage and a clear screen on TV and I'm satisfied 99 times out of 100. So, you might want to take what I say further and throw it in the trash since my expectations aren't really high, but I'll go on. I like the coverage on Versus. Even though they have broadcasted more college football games with regularity now (last season it was just Mountain West Conference games, this season it was MWC/Big 12/Pac 10) and continuing to broadcast such things as fights, bullrighting, outdoor sports etc., they still put a large focus on hockey during the evening time most days during the week I think, much more focus than ESPN did I think. However, if you want the NHL to get to more casual people, I don't care how bad the NHL might have been "treated" by ESPN or how much people in here despise ESPN more than getting a slobbering kiss on the cheek from your 90-year old grandma, it needs to get back on that network. That being said, for me personally again, I could care less where games are on, whether it's VS or ESPN. It could be on A&E or the Cartoon Network or The Learning Channel for all I care. Just be on SOMEWHERE and I am happy.

Even though it wasn't a game winner/had little outcome on the final score, I want to give Datsyuk a big bear hug for his steal and goal, a big bear hug in a heterosexual kinda way, if there is such a way.

And this is a bad thing for Hudler and/or Flipper how exactly??? I think BOTH OF THEM will become better players as their careers develop.
-
This thread is a... so for the people who just despise Hasek and/or keep trying to reach for excuses that Hasek made a dirty play or intentionally injured... because you people are decreasing the intelligence of myself and other intelligent posters in this forum. Thank you.

In this situation, I think both Hasek and Gaborik would be dead then, which would suck for them and ruin their weekend. And then, as hard as it is to fathom, Hasek gets full resolve of blame or being "dirty" here and blame is put on Al Queda for trying to bomb Joe Louis Arena. And actually, Hasek and Gaborik are recognized as "heroes" for sacraficing preventing the explosion of the arena. How about this? What if King Kong got into the arena, and stood in between of Hasek and Gaborik preventing the play from happening? Hasek runs into King Kong, as well as Gaborik. Who's the "dirtiest"? (A) Hasek, (B) Gaborik, © King Kong, (D) All of the Above, or alternative choice (E) Michael Jackson?
-
Oh great, and yet another goalie comparison thread. Yippidie-f**king-do. How else can we blow the Hasek/Gaborik play out of proportion? Ooh ooh I know, let's have a lottery for who things the play was morally right or wrong, and as well as the odds of if Hasek was a just a millisecond late to the puck, he would've caused Gaborik to land on the hairs of his left arm, as opposed to the haris of his right arm! Seriously, we need to let it go people, there was NO intent to injure, Hasek is known for doing this, it's NOT ILLEGAL for goalies to aggressively play the puck like he did, he played the puck first. Gaborik needs to keep his head up there. And for the record, Hudler needed to keep his head up when he got racked LEGALLY by Phaneuf, Williams needed to do the same when he got a concussion last season from a LEGAL check. So you cannot accuse me of being a homer. Now can we all just please f**king LET THIS GO?

Or you can just see things through the "Hasek is the devil" lenses like you and some other people here do... DISCLAIMER: No I am not a gigantic Hasek fan or have huge bias one way or the other towards him or EITHER GOALIE.
