peter forsberg - only willing to go to ottawa or colorado
SouthernWingsFan replied to a topic in General
What are you getting so worked up for? He was never a Red Wing and odds were fairly low that he was going to become one this past offseason IMO. And he kinda played in the Quebec/Colorado franchise for a good while, so you could understand him maybe wanting to play there again. I know I sniff a lot of glue in my lifetime and am pretty dopey, but call it a hunch there... -
I didn't watch the Phoenix game on Saturday so I cannot accurately comment on Holmstrom being a part of a disallowed goal in that game, and I'm speaking in an extremely general sense, but until I see a few more games to where this might happen, I wouldn't get too worked up about this. Holmstrom probably gets away with a lot of stuff within the crease area as well when goals are scored, more or less. It's just that disallowed goals are easily recognizable, because some of them were probably legit. I get more frustrated when referees make 30 calls a game like the Wings/Ducks game recently, that wasn't a hockey game, and there were some b.s. calls for both teams for just ticky tacky stuff.

I aboslutely love just about any kind of blues/jazz/funk music from the 60s/70s/80s era. James Brown/JBs, Lyn Collins, Zapp and Roger, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, Bill Withers, hell I could go on and on. Some great (and silly ) songs from there. George Benson - On Broadway

Pizza good......VERY GOOD Anyways, nothing new with me in terms of weight, clocked in at 148 this morning, but I barely make time for myself to lift weights, so I'm going to try a new routine. I'm getting back into making my early morning around 5:00/5:15 am, but to take care of the weightlifting problems I'm going to try to flip-flop cardio/weightlifting each day. Try to dedicate a day to do hard cardio, running around 45 minutes. Then try to lift weights for 40-45 minutes the following day, plus 10-15 minutes of some light cardio work. And conclude both routines by laying around and/or working out my chest area in the sauna room.

What is the damn deal with people not so much ridiculously hating on Samuelsson, but more on the lack of understanding of his role on the team, as well as the concept of different players having different roles on a roster? Ellis is not here, at least for now, to score 20 - 25 goals. He's here to provide checking/energy/hustle first and foremost. If he scores more, great, but that's not his primary role. Samuelsson has developed into a 2nd line scoring role in his time here. He's not your main scoring threat, but he can be counted on to pick up the slack on a 2nd/3rd line. If others supposedly suited for that 2nd line could consistently produce (i.e. Flipper or Hudler), then Samulesson could be expendable. Right now, they aren't producing, and he has been for the most part. He's doing his job. Ellis would not effectively replace Samulesson b/c for now that isn't Ellis' game. Ellis' production so far has been a good bright spot. He's taking advantage of some injuries right now in limited playing time, especially with Drake's injury as the two seem to have comparable playing styles. Once everybody is healthy, I'd like to see Ellis/Downey/Drake compete for playing time. So far, kind of by default due to Drake's injury and a little more playing time than Downey, Ellis has taken advantage so far if you compare the 3. Too early though to consider him a full regular though I think. I hope he keeps it up though.

Why the hell can't you all have a compromise and just accept that there can be a combination of bad/good bounces that can determine a series, along with a team that's good enough to overcome bad bounces or deflections? But I guess nothing in here can be resolved so simply then.....

Why the heck are the "C" and the "A"s on the wrong
SouthernWingsFan replied to KOCUR26's topic in General
Overreact much? The old-timers whose jerseys are retired and seen above at Joe Louis Arena would probably think differently, and their play definitely wasn't "***" at all... -
Who are these "anti-fighters" you speak of? I'm having a hard time finding them...

I don't get all the Kopecky hate. It's only his second year in the league, he got injured early last season, he's in his early/mid 20s. I'm not anticipating him to be a consistent 20-25 goal scorer throughout his career but he could be a decent filler/3rd line type guy as he tries to establish himself in the NHL. He needs playing time to do that, and it's not like he's getting 25 minutes a game. Let's be patient and quit overreacting on him for crying out loud and see what the kid can do, he hasn't even played a full season of NHL hockey yet

Um......... Yes. This is like sayin that the sky is blue/gray/black more often than not and that water is clear.

Haven't read all responses in this thread, but I'm all for Downey continuing to get his chances, but by no means am I going to go ga-ga or overhype the guy. He's a 4th liner who will hopefully always play with energy and drop the gloves every now and then. Certainly something the Wings can continue to use throughout the season, but that's probably all Downey is going to offer to the Wings. If it makes the Wings a better team, then everybody wins. Not trying to suggest that somebody might have said this in this thread or suggested it, but it's silly to also suggest that certain guys are taking ice time away from Downey, or vice versa, since he'll probably just play 5-7 minutes a game unless he just somehow finds a spark offensively.
-
I really haven't read much of the responses in this thread so I'm sorry if I'm repeating/overlapping others... Downey did his job Thursday night, nothing more/less. He deserves credit where/when it's due, and that includes what happened when he stood up and fought to stick up for his teammates. Those who expect or want him to get more ice time though, I wouldn't expect it, at least not in the immediate future. He has to put goals/points on the board to do that I think, and he's just not that type of a player. He's a 4th liner who will stick up for his guys when necessary and when it is warranted, and hopefully play with a conitinuous stream of energy/intensity with his limited ice time, 5-6 minutes a game. If he can beat odds even more and put points on the board, he'll get more time I think. I was happy to see Downey stick up for his guys and drop the gloves. It wasn't like I was bouncing off the walls doing cartwheels though. I'd definitely like to see Downey continue to play, the players seem to think high of him and I like him so far, but I'm far from making spitting saliva and making drooling puddles over his play.

God I hate when my teams lose games. Not so much because they lost, more so because it’s so annoying seeing/hearing the IQ levels of fans significantly drop after a loss and go to panic mode in sports media outlets. I don’t have a strong positive or negative bias towards either Hasek or Osgood, I like both goalies the same/am indifferent towards them, but let’s get serious here. And for the big Osgood fans, THIS IS NO KNOCK ON OSGOOD as Osgood is the man to me as well. Now… 1. It’s not even 10 games into the season. This isn’t college or pro football where you only have an 11-16 game season. You play at least 80 games in a hockey season. Hell, you play probably a rough estimate of 35 games by December. Even the 35 games are PLENTY OF TIME for Hasek to have plenty of shutout/1-goal/2-goal games and rack up some more wins. 2. Hasek is known to start slow then eventually crank it up a few notches later in a season. 3. Now I’ve never played goalie or hockey for that matter, but I think it is accurately safe to assume this, despite me being a mentally challenged adult. Hasek flopping around like a fish and doing snow angels may not work for other goalies, but it has worked for him his entire career and helped him gain multiple Vezina trophies. It is his own style that has worked best for him. It’s so fricken annoying when fans keep saying that he should change his playing style completely after a loss or two when the style is unique to him and has made him one of the best goalies of his time. Hasek is not going to change his style anytime soon just to please fans that might not like him, his playing style, or ones that are over-panicking. 4. It’s not accurate to make assumptions about either goalie playing well or crappy against the best/worst teams in the league right now, because the season is not even a month old and we don’t know which teams are going to completely dominate yet or just fall into the crapper. Maybe the Hawks will finally get it together this season and contend for a playoff spot or make it. Maybe Anaheim will wake up from their early season lull and jet lag overseas soon and find their groove. Maybe the Kings will stink it up (Osgood’s win) this year. Nobody completely knows yet. 5. See numbers 1-4 and repeat multiple times. Babcock's got a hold of this if Hasek completely falls in the s**tter, as briefly referenced in the MLive article. But it’s so damn early right now, and this is one of the best goalies ever to play the sport. I’m not trying to attack any one specific person and I know I'm coming off like a jackass in this post in the wrong way, but some of the reactions in here are just ridiculous and this thread has very little logic. We have to think people, not idiotically overreact. Two different things. I know the people who have posted in here are much smarter than some of the posts they doled out in this thread.

Holmstrom's my favorite player (partly b/c he has a goofy number and I'm all about the high numbers ). Seriously though, I love his game. He's far from the most talented in terms of skating ability/stickhandling/flashiness etc., but he busts his tail off every second on the ice, and his work ethic more than makes up for it. My Holmstrom man-love has increased pretty much every game this season so far.

Pronger is not a fringe 4th line winger or just a "goon". Those were the only type players this columnist was referring to. I know Chris Pronger means Satan for many people in here, but settle down a bit. As stated, he has his bad moments, but he's far from that type a player and is one of the better d-men in the league, regardless of how much many in here might hate him.

That wasn't even a hockey game Monday night. Special teams out the wazoo thanks to the refs. Downey is going to play, at most, 3rd line minutes I would guess, even if he did produce. That means little/no PP/PK time for him. I'm liking this Drake-Downey-Ellis line though.

2007 College Football Season Talk
SouthernWingsFan replied to SouthernWingsFan's topic in Other Sports
Texas Tech fans, Texas A&M fans, and LSU fans are the most annoying fans and biggest jackasses overall, hands down. I'd lump Tulane fans in there as well since almost every sporting event I've been to with Tulane involved, there has been an idiot doing stupid stuff, but Tulane is rarely good at any sport other than baseball, it's hard to get fan support. -
2007 College Football Season Talk
SouthernWingsFan replied to SouthernWingsFan's topic in Other Sports
This college football season is nucking futs so far. Who the hell could have predicted that the top-2 teams would lose in the same day, that Boston College and South Florida could possible be the 2nd/3rd/4th best team in the national in the same week? As disappointed as it was to see LSU lose that game being a big fan, I was pretty happy for Kentucky. They slugged it out and didn't quit, and deserved every bit of that win. I thought the game severely turned in Kentucky's favor when they were down 27-14 after an LSU FG and after a reception to one of their wideouts or tight ends, he fumbled, and an LSU defender could've easily secured the ball but somehow knocked it out of bounds. Kentucky had huge confidence and momentum then. What was more annoying is I went out for a while last night after the game, I know I shoudn't have but I put on sports talk radio in my car on the way home and heard LSU fans overreact and complain and such. As much as I like LSU, I absolutely CANNOT STAND the general fan base of them. If LSU still wins out, I think they are still in the conferenece championship game. They thankfully didn't lose to an SEC West team/Kentucky is in SEC East, if that's any consolation. If they win out and win the conf. championship game, the national title hopes still remain, at tougher odds now though. At least my school got a good non-conference road win at Stanford, 38-36 in a somewhat disapoointing start to the season. Not the hardest of competition, but there was the upset of USC obviously, so Stanford had to be confident. The big part of it was my school's offense FINALLY woke up and started to get going. Wish it was on TV, but oh well. I'm just hoping for a bowl game, don't care which one it is. And as much as I want LSU to win the SEC and try to get to the National Championship, a part of me wants the little dudes in South Florida or Boston College to get in. -

Pretty much the exact way I feel. You take the good with the bad with him. He's never played an in-your-face/grinding-type game, but he quietly produces every now and then. The Lang ripping in here was ridiculously over the top at times. I wouldn't have minded the Wings bringing Lang back, but it didn't kill me that he left either. I highly doubt he would've gotten as much ice time here this season as he probably will with the Hawks this year. I'm happy that he's kicking butt for the Blackhawks so far, but it's only a week or two into the season? Didn't Jason Williams net 2 against the Wings in his first game as a Blackhawk? Then he disappeared for most of last season... Ask me near the end of the regular season if Lang continues to produce whether I miss him or not. It's too early to fairly judge.

Anyways, read that article yesterday morning. You don't have a whole lot of professional athletes in any sport with the same mindset right now as Osgood. He could probably be making more money somewhere else, and probably playing a good bit more somewhere else either as a starter 50/50 role with another goalie, but he's putting the Red Wings and Detroit first and sacraficing some dollars/work personally to be in a place that he wants to be at. I have a lot of respect for Osgood. Not trying to shun "others" in bad light that consider themselves first to make a living at all, you got to take care of yourself personally and your family etc. etc. etc., and if that means making more money, then do it. I also like Osgood b/c he seemed extremely shy when he started playing in the NHL, now he's turned into a smart-ass jokester. I like those people and consider myself one of them.
