Insert overembelished post on how all media outlets need to pay attention to the NHL *HERE* Anyways, I don't really care all that much if the NHL or hockey isn't getting much pub. I like it and that isn't going to change anytime soon whether it's popular with the general population or not. With that out of the way, hockey isn't void of some bad incidents lately not including the lockout. Bertuzzi/Moore, McSorely/Brashear, etc. Comparing those incidents to something like the Pistons-Pacers incident or Michael Vick current drama is comparing apples to oranges in a way, but the league has it's bad publicity days infrequently from such big incidents. With that being said though, I rarely hear of any "minor" bad incidents from hockey players that much (outside of drunk Belfour every now and then ), not much stupid s**t for drunk driving, causing a ruckus at a gathering, disturbing the peace, etc. etc. There's usually no drama with the NHL along those lines, which I absolutely love. I'm a pretty dull/boring person when it comes to being "entertained". I just like people that work and go about their business and try not to make a big fuss about things every single day, I don't like drama. I'm not an exciting person.

The thought process here certainly makes sense, but I don't think Maltby wants to play anywhere else right now. He's starting to creep up in age, turning 35 this season I think. I don't doubt that he still has the gas left in the tank to play 3 more years in his contract, and I'm all for it, but I think in his last year of this contract, his PT will be reduced by some of the young guys. What does Jiri Hudler have to do with anything on this main thread subject?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writ...tzky/index.html A very good, brief article by SI.com's Darron Eliot in response to the recent Michael Vick drama, largely on how it is "odd" that the NFL and the NBA seem to cause the most drama off the playing field, but it is still watched, while most hockey players, along with Major League Soccer, are clean and easily approachable, and how hockey gets an unfair rap by many. EDIT: I created this same thread more/less but I f'ed up the title in the original obviously...merge or eliminate that thread completely. My bad and thanks!

How so? Care to give some detail and insight? As for Peca, I'll be happy if he signs here, but as has been pointed out already, we have a few decent defense-minded forwards first. Peca's a solid player, but a player of his style isn't of #1 priority. Goals goals goals are needed. In terms of a goal-scorer though, I just don't see/know who is available. If Selanne doesn't retire, I highly doubt he's leaving California, and I just don't see Forseberg coming here as possibly rumored. And me saying Peca isn't a high priority for the Wings doesn't take away that he is a solid player in my opinion.

By spankings, I hope you meant from the stripper, and not from any of the other bachelors.... Ba-dum-ching! While you are pretty much correct in the genreal sense, what many did was illegal. I'm not trying to spoil a mood and I perfectly understand what the purpose of a bachelor party is, but still, you gotta be responsible and take into consideration other people etc. blah blah blah and all that other gooey stuff.

I liked watching the PBH league when it came on back in the day. Was a little bit different/unique, but we need a change of pace every now and then. What I never understood though, why did all the teams have jerseys with the same ending number, but no other jersey numbers? That didn't make sense to me... i.e. 01 11 21 31 and so on... 02 12 22 32 42 52 and so on... etc.

Balsillie group accuses Bettman of forcing Preds to break off talks

How so? Care to elaborate? -
Wonderfully stated Lou, your first line is pretty much the exact same reason I stick up for them. I'm no ESPN junkie or spokesperson, I don't watch it reguarly unless it's college football/NFL. I'm just not into MLB that much, and my interest in college basketball is on the decline for some reason. I have nothing against ESPN whatsoever, hockey or no hockey. Again, they just cater to what the overall general U.S. likes, and hockey is not first on the agenda for a lot of people. Blame the public or NHL marketing (or lack thereof) for that, not ESPN. And wonderfully stated as well Kp-Wings for a good counter argument, instead of just the customary "ZOIKIES ESPN SUCKS B/C THEY DON'T SHOW HOCKEY ENOUGH BECAUSE HOCKEY'S SUPPOSED TO BE THE GREATEST THING ON EARTH" overembelisment in here. I think I understand your stance, in terms of looking for better quality of broadcasts or commentary. For me (for better or worse), that's just not as important. I just want to see the game/event foremost.

Not in 2004. Nobody is leading people to believe Osgood "carried" the Wings in 1998, but he certainly did his part to help the Wings win the Cup, along with a team that usually didn't have much trouble putting the puck in the net that playoff year.
-
He should wear a mathematical equation, like e=mc2, that would be cool.

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article.../707210361/1053 Neat little Q/A session with former coach Scotty Bowman on life after being behind the bench and how he works more of a consulting/scout role now.

Pimento loaf? Damn, I gotta try that! Seriously though, while Legace certainly did his part in helping seal the Wings fate that series, I understand what you are saying. The only three people who showed up that series were Yzerman, Zetterberg, and that other guy who's initials are R.L. (I'm afraid to say the full name as the thread will turn into a ***** fest about "work ethic" instead of Hasek as it was intended for).
-
Can't wait to see how this goalie war thread turns out... Anyways, Hasek should adopt me as a nephew and give me lots of money as a reward for being a good relative, just for fun.

They are supposed to talk football and basketball. The American public likes those two sports the most, whether we like it or not, and the network is just catering to the public. The American public, generally speaking, doesn't think hockey first, so ESPN usually doesn't either. That's neither good/bad since we're all fans of hockey and we'll be watching regardless and hockey will always be on TV somewhere, it's just the reality of the situation
-
Chris Chelios should adopt me as a step-son and give me lots of money. Seriously, I wish I had some clue about his workout routine and how mentally disciplined he is with it. I usually work out in some form 5-6 days a week, and I consider myself mentally strong working out with the little time I have to devote to it during the week, but Chelios is insane. If I could do this at my health club, I'd do what he do and take a spinning bike in the sauna room and see how long I could last. Not even close to him I bet.

Ten to Zero ( the grit/toughness debate)
SouthernWingsFan replied to Andy Pred 48's topic in General
How does Bettman have anything to do with the Wings not having "enforcers"? So you would let go of a guy who will probably play 12-15 minutes a game, kills penalties on a regular basis, has decent size and can throw the body, and while he won’t be a 40-goal scorer anytime soon, he’s shown capability of putting the puck in the net and contributing offensively once in a while? You’d let him go and want an “enforcer†who is just going to play 3 minutes a game and net only 3 goals a year and contribute almost nothing offensively? That’s real smart there… Again, we aren’t the Anaheim Ducks or the Calgary Flames. They win games and play a different type of game than we do. They are more dump-and-chase and play physical just about every minute of the game, while Detroit plays a combination of puck possession, dump-and-chase and trying to always work/skate hard. Both playing styles have proved effective for both Anaheim and Detroit and they aren’t going to change anytime soon for either team. -
Dazz Band - Let It Whip Great funk/dance song from the early 80s.

All right, another question... Why is it when the Cookie Monster eats cookies, he doesn't actually eat them? He just shoves them in the mouth area, and they turn into smaller cookies/crumbs?
-
The '94 -'95 team was expected to win it all. The '06 - '07 wasn't, hence giving them credit.
-
You are just using 1 game out of many as an example. What about the playoff games against Calgary that are full of "physical players" and "enforcers"? Same thing with San Jose? We didn't get pushed around badly those games. We are all spoiled regardless of whether we question the team or not due to the continued success of the Red Wings over 10+ years.
-
Who knows, maybe Brad Norton will get some PT for the Sharks, but I wouldn't expect him to be a regular on a 3rd or 4th line, night in and night out Defenseman13. I don't know if I can accurately say how he played, given how little time he got, but there was probably good reason in Babcock's mind not to play Norton.
-
I wouldn't say they'll ever not get it done, they've just hit some bad luck with recent 2nd round exits. They were close to the SCF in 2004. The Red Wings and San Jose field two different rosters. San Jose has a great package of size and strength with some decent level of "talent". Detroit has more on the "talent" level and definitely doesn't match up to San Jose in terms of size on paper, but the two rosters can get the job done in different ways. Detroit almost got it done going to the SCF this past season, San Jose the same in 2004. While I am always for physical play and standing up for teammates, the way Detroit plays is not going to change. They might not be the biggest team, but they won't cower away from everybody and they will always (I hope) be working hard. A Babcock mantra I think. I'm perfectly content with how the Wings played this past postseason even though they didn't quite make it, and hopefully we'll see more of the same this season.
-
Specifically to the topic title, ALWAYS keep them together on the power play, but if the team isn't running dry on goals, I'd like to see them separate on even strength, spread the wealth kinda thing. I'd like to see more of a Flipper-Datsyuk-Homer line again, if all the lines make sense going into the season. If the Wings are really lacking offense though, put the two together on even strength.
-
All right here is something I don't get... Why is it, when you at a miniature golf course, that people always try to smack the ball as had as they can with the putter and the ball gets lost, when just "TAPPING IT IN" (a la Happy Gilmore) makes the ball go a good 10 - 20 feet at least, close to the hole to begin with? I thought the objective was to put the ball in the hole (no pun intended).
