There is no single clear cut definition for heart or toughness. It's not just about fist throwing or having a you-know-what measure size contest if somebody cheap shotted one of your other players. Is something like that nice to have on a roster? Of course. Toughness can mean a lot of things, like just continuing to skate hard and grind away at a larger opponent, fighting through injury to remain effecting a lot like Yzerman did in the 2002 playoffs for instance, or something like what Paul Kariya (say what you want about him, he's not my favorite either) did in the SCF when he was still with Anaheim and got absolutely destroyed by Scott Stevens and came back and scored a goal after getting back on the ice. This team has continually showed toughness in different ways over the past few seasons, whether it was continuing to push away back in 2007 nearly beating Stanley Cup champion Anaheim in the conference finals, just overwhelming most of the competition in all the 2008 playoffs, or just fighting back and making the playoffs and a good push despite the absurd amount of injuries last season. Hell, this season as well with the injuries.

Bingo, you put it perfectly in bold. Just as aggravating as that can be, more often than not I don't get all that irked with this because it is a fast game and you have to make calls in the heat of the moment, just like I had to do as an official in football and soccer in the past. As irked as I was at the time in the 2009 playoffs when that Hossa goal was called off late in the game that would've forced overtime in Anaheim I believe, I understand losing sight of the puck. I think in the final game of last season's playoffs when we blew out Phoenix to advance, I think Bertuzzi had a goal waved off due to a fast whistle and losing sight with the puck. It sucks, but there is no grey area when it comes to that. "I lost sight of the puck, I can't find it, I'm blowing the whistle". There is no room to question the official on if he meant to do something else or whatever. It's just a matter of how long he waits to blow the play dead, but that's just impossible to determine or set a rule on. Intent to blow the whistle is so stupid. Well, I intend to work out. I intend to go to work on Monday. Doesn't mean all the above will happen. I might run into traffic. I might get sick tonight or have car trouble tomorrow forcing me not to go. That means I DIDN'T go to work or whatever. If they go by this, it should be if the puck crossed the line before the whistle is blown, it's a goal. If it didn't, then it's not. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. The way this rule is now, it is impossible for an official to not look like an idiot and there is too much grey area involved.

Definitely didn't, but it played a bigger hand than is necessary in the stupid Intent to Blow the Whistle rule, which needs to burn a fiery death. All I ask of officials is to try to be as consistent as possible, and to get calls right if they go to review or need video evidence. If you're going to call 15 penalties a game, cool. Do it fairly for both teams. If you are just going to call 3, don't call anything dinky and let them play. It's a combination of bad officiating as well as stupid rules.

Hyperbole perhaps? Even if you weren't meaning it to be, I'm going to pretend it is if this is the case. Such a response like this, along with many of eva unit zero's just shows how absolutely aggravating extreme points of view are regarding Hudler in this thread, and extreme points of view in general on both the absurdly positive and absurdly negative sides. Hudler played like rear end to start most the season. He's played better lately. It can be as simple as that to accept, and I'm talking to both extremes here. People don't need stuff like "HE'S TOO SHORT ZOMG!!!!" responses or 15 lines of statistical essays to understand this.

If what the FSN Detroit feed on my computer said right during the game today, 5-0-1 in their last 6 games is New Jersey. All but too little/too late for their playoff chances but they'll probably be playing us with a ton of confidence next game.

I ought to get better skating lessons and apply to be a ref as a 2nd job. Because I couldn't be worse than the NHL brass in general. It didn't fully cost the Wings this game today obviously but another example of idiot rules and officiating with the intent to blow rule, etc.

My message to Forsberg... In all seriousness, even though he played with the "enemy" when the rivalry was more heated, in the end I don't have all that much against him, but you just got to wonder how he can keep this up. Eventually your body is going to tell you no, it's time to give it up.

Just another example of the incompetency of NHL officiating in general regardless of team. I try to get officiating in any sport the benefit of the doubt given that I have experience officiating basketball and soccer games (albeit at just a club or intramural level back when I was in college, but obviously a decent bit of those playing played sports in high school, are competent athletically, etc.), but even with replay they still mess it up. What is it that makes them so inept at times? Is it just so much grey area or subjectivity in some rules? Because in football, at least when a play is iffy and a coach challenge's it or the ref's review it, pretty much 99 times out of 100 I say or think, "The refs eventually got the play call correct like it was or should have been." I rarely ever tell myself the officiating played a bigger part than necessary in determining the outcome of a football game. In the NHL, whole other story.

Very very nice. And I've typically liked the Stars/North Stars color combos, hard to mess goalie masks/uniform designs with those colors (and yes, I even thought their bull uniform from years ago was actually halfway decent).

And this is the problem like you've stated. We have a fair amount of people in here that seem to accept that there is a middle ground on this. Great if we have one, but they'll probably be all right without one and it's not going to ruin anybody's evening. Unfortunately, the extreme points of view on both sides are the loudest. And we've seen it on both sides were some are just extremely gung-ho about the subject, some thinking they are useless scrubs. I'll give the extremely gung-ho people that. However, the useless scrub side has become less existent in recent memory to me. Those people or that attitude just isn't highly present here anymore. Thus, you have the extremely gung-ho people still getting in a quandry. Sorry guys, I respect that you all are gung-ho about the subject, but the all or nothing approach or the "anti" label that you all like to throw on people just isn't there, or they aren't there.
