    Gustav Nyquist Appreciation Thread

nyquististhefuture nyquististhenow sounds more broken English/euro than nyquistishere (of course gus speaks perfect English so it's not perfect)

    4/2 GDT - Bruins 2 at Red Wings 3

Can we just re-name every thread "gustav nyquist appreciation thread?"

    4/2 GDT - Bruins 2 at Red Wings 3

My old ass jumped 3 feet in the air when gus scored. My new hero. Hell all the kids are my new heroes. Jimmy looked out of position a few times but he got the job done! Soon he'll be back to also being my hero. Finish strong boys!

    Perspective

Great idea for a thread, Dickie. I've been as pessimistic about our playoff hopes as many on this forum, but the negativity was really starting to bum me out. This is refreshing - and astute.

    3/22 GDT : Red Wings 3 at Wild 2

Beast mode, indeed! Had to listen to the game, so I have no idea how they really looked out there - but sounded like a b******t disallowed goal away from 4-2. Staying positive and believing! 2 more points tomorrow, boys. LGW!

3/20 GDT - Penguins 4 at Red Wings 5 (OT)

Staying positive tonight. Certainly no reason to do so, but that's my attitude right now. Crysby goes down with one of those nagging groin injuries that stretch from day-to-day into 3 weeks. Or-prick develops blurred vision and can't continue after crying so hard over an interference call that went against him. Malkin just quits out of frustration as Emdog and Glendog combine for 5 goals. Wings win 6-2, reviving all our hopes in one awesome upset victory! Or we squeak out a hard-fought 3-2 victory and all the injury stuff still happens to Pittsburgh. Either way, I'm happy.
  7. True that Ferraro and a third would have been better, but that last bit about haunting us for years is a little bombastic, isn't it? I don't spend any time watching prospects in the minors, so I'm not well-informed on jarnkrok's talent...but is he really that good? It just seems like lots of people are ready to jump off the ledge right now - I know it's an accumulation of Holland's inactivity, but still. It's one trade.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Agreed. We've all probably been frustrated at one time or another (or all the time for some people) with Holland's fear of making big-ish moves via trade over the years, but I still give him and the rest of the front office credit for drafting from low rounds quite well for so many years. Some of these long-term contracts and re-signings made me do a face-palm like many others. Maybe people are right for hammering him over his propensity to err on the side of caution, but I'm still happy to see the young talent we've got coming up (even if many of them age in the minors longer than we'd like). This is all part of the payment for how much we got to enjoy the run from the mid-90s to 2009. All that said, damn it would be cool to see a real move at the deadline for somebody who can help right now on the blue line or a power forward or something.
  9. I'd just like to say how glad I am to see Pavel leading the forwards in ice time last night after getting trashed all over the place for playing in the Olympics and getting hurt consequently missing the next 15 games or whatever the pessimists predicted. To me, he's spent the last decade-plus displaying nothing but a team-first attitude and grit. I had to listen on the interweb since I live out of state, so if he had his worst game in recent memory, feel free to correct me. It was just a bummer reading all the negativity about his choice to wear the C for Russia on home ice. Maximum respect, Pavel. Now, let's win another one, boys!

    Zetterberg out with herniated disc

Possible silver lining: Z gets healthier, the kids are forced to take on more responsibilities, show their grit from 20 years in Grand Rapids, and the Wings fight into the playoffs and pull an improbable upset of the Pens or Bruins. Yeah I'm hanging my hat on this pipe dream until further notice.

1/22 GDT : Blackhawks 4 at Red Wings 5 (SO)

Is that what we call a big win? Also, how f**kin awesome is it to see Darren Helm flying around and scoring the shootout winner? Hopefully in April we're talking about this one being a turning point. Ambitious, yes. But we can hope.

****(Stuff) no one says about the Wings

This is kinda true. The best one so far for me was the one about z's powerful beard. Here's one from Eddie Olcyczxzcyk: "Teams get away with so much 'subtle interference' against the Wings."

Regarding Roy's possible role in that dirty hit: I'm not normally the kind of guy who believes coaches would be that classless, but in Roy's case I'd make an exception. Better than 60% chance he planted that seed, hoping in some goonish, do*che-y way that he'd fire up his team against the Wings. Great win for the guys and I hope Roy and that whole organization end up paying for their lameness someday. Well, I guess the last 10 years of suckitude have been decent punishment...

Datsyuk: I want to sign extension with Wings this summer

of course i intensely want pavel to stay...but he would be one of the few athletes i'd fail to criticize for whatever decision he makes. i often assume pro athletes make their decisions for selfish reasons (and might be very wrong to do so), but he has my complete respect. i consider watching him develop over his entire nhl career just as enjoyable as watching nick lidstrom. for different reasons, but very much the same. i'd be sad if he left for the khl, but i'd gladly line up to shake his hand if he did. we're lucky to have had him on our team.

Tip of the hat to Babcock

this is even more satisfying because i think i remember analyst clowns on either nhl network or nbcsports saying babcock vs. quenneville gave neither team an advantage. i don't think it's a homer thing to say babcock's getting the best of pornstache this series and every series they've coached against one another.

Should we bring Tootoo in for game 4?

the Todd and Shinguard Assassin! hilarious!

    Hey Hawks fans....

couldn't agree more. the last two lines are outplaying chicago in a big way right now. that doesn't seem to have happened during the regular season for them against anybody. the hawks are showing their lack of poise on each line. i don't think the wings have looked this fresh yet the entire year (well, maybe except for the last four games or so of the reg season). i had a mini-argument with someone at the beginning of the anaheim series about our 3rd line and i feel more strongly about their performance now than i did prior to the playoffs. they continue to do their job. they're a big part of winning that anaheim series and leading this one. props to the kids!
  19. Alright, boys. Since we heard so much before the playoffs started about how deep Chicago is with goaltending, let's chase crawford and let 'em show off that depth! I know Babs doesn't want high scoring games, but I'd take a 7-3 victory tonight just so we can see that top-notch backup Emery.
  20. I can't watch the whole thing right now, but a couple of things I love about this video: 1. I love how old footage from the JLA makes it sound like the place was so much louder than today. (was it really louder back then?) 2. I'd almost forgotten how hideous the Blues unis were in the early and mid-90s. 3. Watching Vladi Konstantinov score on that break against Roy in '96 is just awesome. 4. Remembering hitting my head on the low ceiling in my parents' basement when Yzerman won game 7 against the Blues in '96 from jumping off the couch. 5. Loving hearning Gary Thorne call playoff hockey games. That guy ruled as ESPN's main play-by-play man. ...and that's all just in the first 4 minutes!

Any tips on ways to tolerate the NBC media?

i love the "subtle hook/hold/slash/pick" comment! you forgot about the "slingshot" endboards that never favor an opposing team. honestly i think doc does okay and edzo, although he's a total homer, sometimes gives good insight into what's happening. bottom line is that seems to be nbc's top broadcast team and we're stuck with them. i'd love to hear him sigh as a series-clinching goal goes in off #13's stick.
  22. WORLD WAR Z! also, empty seats as they start ot? what are these people finishing their cigarettes? jesus.
  23. holy s*** that's 5! i wasn't expecting that man. let's get about 5 or 6 goals on this pp!
  24. yep. i think that goal came off the 23rd defensive zone faceoff loss tonight.
