We are on the short lists for Boyle, Niskanen, and Iginla....3 of the top free agents. I would hardly say Holland is "phoning it in".

Just read on NHL trade rumors that Iginla has narrowed his list to four teams but the most likely landing spot is Detroit or Tampa -
I prefer Boyle and Niskanen for that reason. Boyle can be gone in two years and make room for whoever excels most out of our defensive prospects. I know a lot of people on here think all of them are going to turn into NHL defensemen but the reality is we will be lucky to get one great one out of the bunch. That gives us Niskanen at least long term.

The most interesting thing in the article to me is that the source says the Wings believe they are TWO defensemen away from being an exceptional team. So it's not sounding so crazy that we could land BOTH Niskanen and Boyle.

It depends who you read. Fox Sports Detroit is saying Niskanen is the guy so who knows. I'll keep the beer on ice till noon I guess. -

I agree. Although a top forward certainly helps, I don't think offense would be this teams problem as they currently stand; granted our top forwards stay healthy.

There are some reports that we are on the short list and willing to meet Niskanens demands but I think that only happens if Boyle goes else where. Boyle is clearly our top choice because of the term. -
I guess it's noteworthy that he had no forwards going to the Wings. He predicts Vanek to Minny and Iggy to Montreal.

Ahh July 1st..... The day I impatiently wait for over a month. The day that i think will bring me so much excitement and joy...and it's the day that I eventually drink myself into a coma after the Red Wings pass on many big free agents to sign 38 year old Dan Boyle. Ahhh can't wait for noon. -
Scott Burnside from ESPN has his predictions on where people will end up and has Boyle going to the Wings, Niskanen to the Caps, Ehrhoff to Tampa, and Stralman to either the Wings or Tampa. I'd be ok with Boyle if we get Stralman. Stralman is a defensive defenseman and makes us stronger on the back end why Boyle can help on the powerplay for two years until Sproul gets ready.

I know right?! Makes me think Boyle is the guy because they don't want to get caught in a long term contract.

I think he is a good defenseman and will be a "good" defenseman but he isn't a "great" defenseman so he is going to cash in for as long as he can because he knows that. He isn't going to be the top defenseman for any team he plays for unless their defense is garbage. But he is going to get paid top defenseman money.

Niskanen to cut his list to four teams tonight and Lightning and Capitals believed to be two of them. Not looking good for us cuz my guess is one is Minnesota and that leaves one team left. I'm guessing we are out of the running.

Helene St. James said we are less likely to go after Niskanen and more likely to sign Boyle and that Boyle has some interest. I have a feeling Niskanen will end up in Minny but I hope I'm wrong.
