For me it's not that I completely don't want Alfie. I just want him as a last resort after going after some of the bigger name free agents. But what I don't want is Alfie signed before free agency even begins and before Holland has a chance to "kick the tires" of some other free agents.

I don't think he will be ineffective and he can give us some goal scoring and leadership, but I think we can all agree he isn't worth a 5.5M cap hit like he was last season. I'd give him half of that to have him stay. If he wants more then let him walk. P.S. This is my 500th post on the site.

I hope for Hollands sake that if he signs Alfie it's a low cap hit. Like 3M and lower. I suspect it will much higher though. I don't understand Hollands thought process. I know he doesn't like free agent players signed to a long term but it's like he keeps saying "let's sign Alfie for one year and wait for a better free agent class." Unfortunately teams sign their best players so free agency isn't going to change much year to year. Throw Alfies money at a long term solution like Stastny or Moulson instead of paying an extremely old veteran.

I was really hoping we would go after a big time offensive free agent like Stastny but this pretty much crushes that dream.

I've been thinking about what has been so frustrating for me these past few off seasons and I think we have been so spoiled in the past to get that big player or big blockbuster deal that we think it's necessary to get that or the offseason is a bust. I think we all crave Holland to just have one throw of the die and take a risk on a big trade deal. Every move he makes is so calculated and cautious and although that is great most of the time, you can't always be safe if you want to win a cup. You have to shake things up every once in a while.

I watched all 82 Red Wings games last season and the funny thing is my jaw dropped when I saw Cleary played 52 games this season. If I would have guess i would have said around 25. That's how unmemorable he was last season. He was close to literally doing nothing for us offensively.
