Yzerman did NOT admit that Seider was a reach at 6th. He was only considering a trade back because he didn't think other teams had him as high on their board. Why not trade back and pick up an extra asset if you can still get your guy? It would be stupid not to. That's what Holland did in 2013 when he traded back two spots to take his guy (Mantha) at 20, and picked up an extra 2nd round pick (Bertuzzi). If Yzerman could have done the same he would have. He quickly realized that other teams shortly after him were really high on Seider as well, so he took his guy with his pick. Do you really think there were players available at 6 that Yzerman and co thought were better than Seider, but picked the lesser player anyway?

Imagine thinking that you can only judge a player if they're playing against equal or better competition. How do scouts rank high end prospects (Alex Newhook), when they're clearly playing against inferior competition in a sub par league (BCHL). Maybe they ignore the competition and look at the raw tools of the individual player. Crazy, I know... I'm confused though. Why did you (@kipwinger) ask where you could watch the previous games if you had no intention of watching the games? Anyway, I see no harm in hyping prospects. We're all fans of the same team. We should all be excited about the same players. I'd prefer to be overly optimistic about a prospect like Seider or Zadina or Veleno, than be overly pessimistic... or worse again, come down on people that do choose to hype these players. Sure, it's only a prospects tournament. We're all aware of that. We all know the level of competition at these tournaments, but the players that we need to be playing well, are doing just that. Hockey is back. I love this time of year. HYPE!!! (or not). You do you...
  4. Also, Veleno is regressing. The good news is, if we beat Dallas tonight, we win the Stanley Cup!!
  5. We were down 4-2 in the 2nd period, but came back and won 7-4. Pearson had a hat trick and an assist. Smith had two assists. Hirose and Veleno had a goal each, and Zadina and Kuffner had an assist each. Loggins scored the other two goals and Seider had two assists.

You're missing one fine detail though... Veleno WILL be a really good 2C.

Yeah, I'm not big into offer sheets, but would have been worth a try to pry Werenski out of Columbus. He most definitely would have signed one to play for his hometown team, Detroit and BFF, Larkin. Of course it would have had to be something Columbus wouldn't have been able to match... What would that look like? $8M x 7?

    2019-20 Prospects Thread

I was out of town for a few days, so wasn't able to watch the games live. I was finally able to catch up and watch the first two games yesterday / last night. Great showing from most of our top prospects. Stats through 2 games... Goals / Assists / Shots / +/- Veleno - 4 / 0 / 11 / -2 Zadina - 0 / 4 / 7 / -1 Hirose - 0 / 2 / 0 / -2 Kuffner - 2 / 2 / 3 / 0 Smith - 1 / 1 / 5 / +2 Pearson - 1 / 1 / 9 / +1 Seider - 0 / 2 / 4 / +1 Lindstrom - 1 / 0 / 2 / -2 Regula - 0 / 0 / 2 / +1 The player I've been most pleasantly surprised with so far is Pearson. He's played really well in the first two games, last game in particular. Hopefully he can push for a spot as a bottom six center in the next year or so. Smith has been decent as well. His skating seems to have really improved over the past couple years. Pretty much every other player has played as expected, aside from Zadina being the setup man and Veleno being the trigger man on that top line... Hirose has looked good, and I know he's more of a pass first guy, but I'm a little surprised he doesn't have a single shot on goal in the first two games. Kuffner has looked good as well. Much better than that stint at the end of last season with the Wings. Of course, that's to be expected with the massive difference in level of competition, as well as role on the team. As mentioned by others, Seider has looked really good, makes smart decisions with and without the puck and looks extremely poised out there. Lindstrom has flown under the radar, which I guess is a good thing for a defensive defenseman. Same goes for Regula. I will be watching the game live tonight for sure. Can't wait!

I knew this is what you meant. You get a player that puts up 70+ points and you suddenly want to trade them because they will command a big pay day? To me that's really dumb. You want good players. You need to be willing to pay good players. What exactly would you want to trade one of them for? If you're trading for a top pair defenseman, you're going to have to pay him that or more. If you're trading for anything less, it's a waste.

Yeah, suggesting that we should trade Mantha or Athanasiou because they will "cost too much" is beyond dumb. If our young players play well enough this season to command a big contract, that's great news for us, not a bad thing...

What would Ericsson's career have been if he played forward instead of transitioning to defense?...

    Kronwall Officially Announces Retirement

Yeah, I hope he stays in North America. The question is, will he make the Wings out of camp (I doubt it), or will he start / play most / all of the season with the Griffs?...

    Kronwall Officially Announces Retirement

As amazing as Lidstrom was though, he was still a 3rd round pick, so that was understand at the time. Yzerman was drafted 4th overall and made the Wings in his draft year. Different position, I know, but similar draft positions... Yeah, that's what I'd like to see as well, but I think Kaski will at least start in Grand Rapids, unless he has an unreal camp, or we have a ton of injuries on the back end again. Yeah, Lindstrom will be playing in Grand Rapids this season.
