I think Lavoie is my top pick at 35... He'll likely be gone though... -

Yes. Players playing in European Leagues in their draft year have options to play anywhere from junior to pro. He is eligible to play in DEL (Mannheim), OHL (Owen Sound), AHL (Grand Rapids), NHL (Detroit). Same with Zadina last year, only because he was technically with Pardubice, on loan to Halifax. Cool story bro... I disagree. Yzerman took the player he felt was the best player available. -
I'd be happy with any of Brink, Leason, Kaliyev, Lavoie, Legare, Beaucage, Fagemo with our 2nd round picks... If we could get two of these guys, I'd be thrilled.

Holland absolutely would have been crucified. 100% I also agree that this pick is equal to the Coyotes last year, in the sense that the shock factor is there. Hayton is proving to be a very good prospect though, and I doubt Chayka regrets that pick. I hope Yzerman doesn't regret this pick... Eat crow for what? Do you actually believe that Yzerman thought any of the forwards were far and away the better player, but still picked Seider? -

Very nice. Initial reaction was complete and utter shock, but after giving it some thought and more research, I really like the pick. In Yzerman We Trust. What are you talking about? You actually believe that Yzerman and his staff believe that Zegras or Cozens or whoever are better players than Seider, but took him anyway? No chance. They took who they believed was best player available. Regardless, very ballsy pick by Yzerman. He knows how pivotal this pick is for the Red Wings, and he knows that it would have been an unpopular pick based on all the mock drafts, but he trusted his gut, and took his guy. Mad respect. There are a lot of people upset with this pick, but I can't help but think how different everyone's reaction would have been if Holland made that pick... -

A few years ago I would have been all for it. Now, at the age of 27, pending UFA, nah... If he could be had for cheap, sure, but I wouldn't want to give up the sort of package I think it would take to get him... -
I really like Seider, but not for our first pick in a pivotal draft, that should see us get a much better (at this time) prospect...

Link? Anyone reputable reporting this? Or just another JD Burke, or whatever the f*** his name is...

Do it Yzerman! -
Yeah, I guess I fall into that same mindset. I wouldn't take a goalie that early for the same reasons you mention. I'm also very confident that one of Larsson, Eliasson or Petruzzelli will become a number one in a few years. I wouldn't count on adding multiple picks at this point... Maybe one trade gets done on the floor, but aside from a trade up / back, I wouldn't count on any player movement from the Wings... Maybe though...
-
I would say a player projected to go top 5-10 is more likely to be an impact player than a player projected to go top 15-25, but what do I know... If Knight were such a sure thing, and guaranteed top 3 goalie in the league, I'm sure he'd go in the top 5. I'd love to move up and grab any of those defensemen, especially Harley. I think he has the highest ceiling of any of those guys. I could see him becoming a Chabot type defenseman in a few years. Leafs don't have a 1st this year. Traded to LA for Muzzin.
-
I just think goaltenders are the hardest to predict of any position. I personally wouldn't take a goaltender in the first round, possibly first two rounds. I certainly wouldn't take one in the top 10. Even if we were to use a couple 2nd round picks to move up into the first round, I'd rather target a player like Tomasino / Suzuki or Seider / Broberg / Soderstrom than take a chance on a goaltender. There's just as much of a chance that Zegras becomes the next Datsyuk as there is Knight becomes the next Price. We have no idea what the future holds for any of these kids, but I'm hoping of the three really solid goalie prospects we have, at least one turns out to be a legit starter. Sure.

No, taking a player of need instead of best player available in the 1st (and even 2nd) round is dumb. You can address needs later in the draft when it's more of a crapshoot. If you have three players, a left-handed winger and a right-handed center and a right-handed defenseman, and all players are equal in the eyes of your scouts (that rarely happens), than you can take the player that best fits your team need. If your scouts view one of those players to be far and away the better player, you take that player, every. single. time... We're not going to take Cozens or Dach just because we need right-handed forwards, and we're not going to take Broberg or Seider, just because we need defensemen. If Yzerman and his staff view Zegras or Podkolzin as the best player available, they should absolutely take one of them. Take BPA via draft. Address need via trade.
-
The last thing this team needs is a goaltender. As good as Knight is projected to be, I'd be a little pissed (to say the least) if we took a goaltender with our first pick. What the f*** are you talking about? They are drafting based on THEIR work. Best player available according to their personal list... What prospect list do you think teams are looking at for BPA? What, do you think there's a communal list past around by all general managers and they either decide to take the next guy on that list, or randomly go off the board?... Who creates this "list"? The Bobfather?

Jim Benning and Peter Chiarelli managing the same team?... To VAN: 2019 1st round pick (6th overall), 2019 2nd round pick (SJS - 60th overall) To DET: 2019 1st round pick (10th overall), 2020 1st round pick, Brock Boeser -
Until a reputable source comes out with a quote from Yzerman, stating that he "wants the best right-handed defenseman in this year's class", I'm going to call bulls***. Yzerman will take best player available, regardless of position. If he and his staff believe that Sieder is the best player available (I doubt it), then I'm sure he would look to trade back. I'm sure Zegras or Cozens or Dach or Podkolzin are ahead of Seider (or any other defenseman outside of Byram), and if Benning wants to trade up, it's going to cost. You can trust this JD Burke guy and his unnamed source if you like. I don't.
-
I wouldn't hate if we drafted Caufield, but he's probably 4th or 5th on my list (not including Hughes, Kakko, Byram and Turcotte)... He probably is one of the better pure goal scorers in this year's draft class (Kaliyev being close behind), but both are in that 3rd tier of players for me. I want one of Zegras or Cozens (assuming the top 4 guys are gone). I flip-flop between the two, depending on the day. I've been warming up to Dach as well.
-
We should have kept Holland around and maybe we would be drafting your boy Broberg...
-
Two French kids I'd like to see Yzerman target in the 2nd round, Nathan Légaré and Alex Beaucage, as well as Finnish defenseman, Mikko Kokkonen.

You mean you're torn between Helm and Glendening who Holland would take? Or who you would want him to take? Given the choice, I would definitely rather him take Nielsen... but yeah, he would likely rather one of Helm or Glendening... -
Yes, I would, but I doubt they will.
-
Best case scenario, the draft goes the way of Button's mock up until the Los Angelespick , and they take Podkolzin, leaving Byram to Detroit...
-
That's pretty much how I see it going down as well... 1. NJD - Hughes 2. NYR - Kakko 3. CHI - Turcotte 4. COL - Byram 5. LAK - Dach 6. DET - Cozens? Zegras? Podkolzin? Trade back???
