I hear ya. I just think it could be possible that he just wanted more say into where he goes if he does go at the deadline. I'm sure he's always wanted to win the Cup (what player hasn't), and this could be one of his last opportunities. Of course it could be that he just doesn't want to be traded, but... maybe not...
-
Huh? I thought he was from British Columbia? He was born in Coquitlam, BC and played his youth/junior hockey there as well. As far as I know, he only moved to the United States when he went to BU. It's possible that he could refuse to sign with Detroit, but I think there would be a high probability that he would sign. The Wings defensive depth is relatively thin, and he'd likely be given a spot as soon as he finishes up at University. He would also have a buddy (Cholowski) from his home province that he could potentially be paired with, that could fill him in on the "culture" in Detroit and the Red Wings organization. Also, like I said, if such a trade were to happen, there would have to be a conditional pick involved based on him signing.

Another thing I was thinking about... We all know that Vanek has a NTC, but maybe he asked for that, not so much so that he wouldn't be traded, but more so that he could control where he gets traded. Look at the teams he's been traded to over the past several years. He was traded to Montreal in 2014, Florida in 2017 and Columbus in 2018, all fringe playoff teams, with virtually no chance at winning the Cup. He might be around for another year or two, but why would he not want to get traded to a top team for a chance to get his name on the Stanley Cup? I think he would. Regardless, we're not likely to get anything more than a 3rd or 4th round pick, but I'd take it. He's still been pretty solid in an offensive role, and could provide offensive depth for any of the top handful teams...

LOL mine too buddy, mine too... I'd still trade for him, even if it were just his rights, but there would have to be a conditional pick involved for sure.

I've been clamoring for a Nyquist for Fabbro trade for some time now, but I just realized, Fabbro still hasn't been signed by Nashville, due to playing college hockey. Just wondering how that would work? Would they be able to trade his rights, without having him under contract? Would that be too risky a trade for us? Once he's done with Boston U, couldn't he become a free agent and sign with any team he wants? Not saying I think he would do that, but I guess it would be a possibility...? See above.

Huh? Who's ever said this? Cozens will likely be a top 5 pick, maybe even top 3, but I don't think a single person has suggested he would go 1st overall... It will be Hughes or Kakko. I'd still be shocked if whoever wins the lottery doesn't pick Hughes though.

2/7 Chivalry Is Red GDT - Golden Knights @ Red Wings - 7:30 PM ET

I take it, Larkin is ruled out for tonight's game... -
I know kids have gotten opportunity, and I don't doubt that will continue, but I do doubt Nielsen would get demoted to the 4th line. I could be wrong though. Some veterans are still relied on heavily, and get more ice time than they might deserve. eg Justin Abdelkader. Anyway, I'd just prefer to stay away from free agency this offseason, unless we're able to shed a big contract that we wouldn't otherwise be losing to free agency. eg Frans Nielsen.

Questionable is great news, since he was expected to miss 1-2 weeks, and a lot of people were thinking maybe even longer. Good to see Ras back. Hopefully he can get going here. I'd love to see what he could do in a top six role, but that can't happen with elite top line winger Justin Abdelkader... -
Sure, if we were an organization that didn't rely heavily on veterans carrying the load. I don't see any way the current management / coaching staff would demote Nielsen to the 4th line wing. And until something changes, I'll assume Holland and Blashill will be here for the foreseeable future.

No, I don't necessarily think Veleno will be ready to fill that 2C role in the next two seasons(although I wouldn't rule it out). Which is why I said, I'd like to sign a player like Duchene (not necessarily him) to fill that 2C role, IF we can trade Nielsen. If we have all three of Larkin, Duchene and Nielsen down the middle, that means that Veleno is either forced to stay in Grand Rapids, play 4th line center with plugs in Detroit, or moved to the wing for THREE more seasons after this one. All three of those scenarios would be bad for our top center prospects development in my opinion. Holland says he wants to compete as early as next season, but if we're being real, that's a bit of a pipe dream. We're likely 2-3 years away from truly competing, and if we're not able to get an upgrade at center in that time, via trade or free agency, I'm okay with rolling Nielsen there until one of the prospects (currently in the system or upcoming drafts) emerge.
-
I know right? Holland, once again, sitting on his ass, not doing s***. He obviously hasn't made any phone calls because he hasn't made any trades... I bet GM's are calling him every day, but the idiot has his phone turned off until February 25th...
-
This is obviously what happened. Holland sux...

See above. I don't think we're out of "cap hell" yet. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we're near the cap again next season, even without a big splash in free agency like signing Duchene. Duchene is going to command more than Larkin, and I don't want to sign a 2C long term for more money than our 1C / future captain. We're rebuilding and we'll have some promising young kids coming over the next couple seasons. So unless we're moving out or moving on from several players, I don't want to add to the log jam. I think Veleno will be ready, if not next season, the following season for sure, and I don't want him held back because of a 35/36 year old Nielsen and / or a 29/30 year old Duchene.

The Griffins were down 1-0 with less than two minutes remaining, and The Moose took two consecutive penalties. We pulled Sateri to make it a 6 on 3, and Hronek scored a one-timer off a pass from Zadina. They put Sateri back in, and immediately gained control, set up for the 5 on 4 and scored less than a minute later with 25 seconds remaining. Big win, and big night for Hronek. Zadina played an okay game. Had a really good chance early in the game, but was robbed. Lashoff also scored what would have been the tying goal earlier in the 3rd, but it was negated due to goaltender interference by Rasmussen. As nice as it is to see Hronek dominating down in the AHL, he really should be in the NHL.

There's also a real possibility that half of those guys could be re-signed, especially if Holland is still the GM... If Kronwall wants to come back, I think he'll be back. If Holland can't get a big return for Nyquist, I think he'll be extended. Same goes for Howard. Vanek should be done, but wouldn't be surprised if he's brought back either. Frk and Witkowski are depth guys, basically making league minimum, so if not them, it'll be two players costing around the same. Jensen could (hopefully) be brought back at a slight raise. I could see Green and / or Ericsson brought back as well. Daley will likely (hopefully) be done. Bernier could go either way, and may depend on if Howard is still around / playing at a high level. I could also see Glendening and / or Helm brought back... Of course they're not all coming back, but I could easily see a few of them back beyond their current contracts. I agree with Trouba. I'd go hard after him next offseason. I'd be okay with signing Duchene if we can trade Nielsen, who I'd be aggressively shopping at this point. Otherwise, I wouldn't be interested.

Holland interview with NHL.com https://www.nhl.com/news/detroit-red-wings-will-entertain-trade-offers/c-304544204 "We're going to give Zadina a little bit of an opportunity in March. I want him or the young players to see what the NHL is all about, so as they head into the offseason [they know what they need to work on]. I think a young player can really improve in the gym between June and August." I hope Zadina is up for a stint right after the deadline. I'll be at a couple games in early March, and it would be awesome to see him live.

Still going with that "he got lucky" bulls*** I see. Give credit where credit is due. That was a fantastic trade. But anyway, back to the Nyquist trade talk... All of Calgary, Winnipeg, Nashville, New York, Montreal, Boston, Washington and Pittsburgh have 1st round picks that they could trade. The teams that don't, San Jose, Tampa and Toronto, all have 2nd round picks and prospects that they could trade.
-
So it's ONLY good news if ALL 5 of the forwards ahead of Nyquist get re-signed? It's not good news if one or two get re-signed? None of those players are "getting in the way of us landing a 1st" for Nyquist. If / when those players get traded (not all of them will), it will be for a 1st, plus. Then when the teams that missed out on those players go to Holland, he would still get a 1st round pick. Look at what Holland got in the eleventh hour for Tatar. Not saying he'll get that sort of return, but I have full confidence in Holland getting a very good return on Nyquist.
-
Some more good news on a potential Nyquist trade...
-
Yup. All joking aside though, Nyquist should and likely will get us at least a 1st round pick.
-
Jesus... If Boyle nets a 2nd, Nyquist should get us two 1st's...
