The odds of Yzerman offersheeting Pettersson are the exact same as Yzerman trading for McDavid. Literally 0.
-
A lottery win next summer is FAR more likely than a Pettersson offersheet. You're comparing apples to oranges here...
-
One is a trade candidate. Trades ALWAYS happen. One is an offersheet candidate. Offersheets NEVER happen. Gee, I wonder why...?
-
Not at all accurate, but sure... This is also a playoff team with McDavid. What do we think it would cost to acquire McDavid? Discuss...
-
I never once said you're "not allowed to talk about" this or anything else. I don't see the point, but by all means, continue if you'd like. I was talking about what this team will look like WITHOUT Pettersson, and why it doesn't make sense to offersheet Pettersson, but you kept bringing it back to "if" we were to offersheet Pettersson... Exactly.
-
There's a huge difference between "not likely" and "never going to happen". Let's also discuss adding McDavid and Makar... Regardless, I said my piece on Pettersson. I was trying to back away from that discussion and continue discussing the reality of this team going forward.
-
For the umpteenth time, I know a lottery win isn't likely. It's a 'what if' scenario on a discussion board...
-
If you know a Pettersson offersheet isn't going to happen, why are you talking about where this team would be if we added Pettersson? No one is disputing that we would be a much improved team with Pettersson. I'm talking about where this team will be this coming season. Not where this team will be if we add Pettersson. We agree that it's never going to happen, so what's the point? So now that we have that behind us, where do you realistically think this team will finish WITHOUT Pettersson, and potentially losing two of Vrana, Bertuzzi, Fabbri, and the inevitable injuries? I think we finish bottom 5-10 again. We're headed in the right direction, but we're not there yet. If you believe what Yzerman has been saying, I assume you would agree that he's not done with this rebuild quite yet. I'm sure Yzerman is quite confident in himself and his staff. Yeah, I'm sure he knows they don't "need" a top 3 pick, but I'm also sure he knows it would help significantly.

Offersheets don't happen. Again, we are more likely to win the draft lottery than sign a player like Pettersson to an offersheet. Draft lottery odds (10-20%) are low, but offersheet odds (0%) are much lower... I completely disagree. This team is not out of the basement yet. I'm actually shocked that you, of all people, think we are. Prepare for another bottom 5-10 finish again this season. I'll give until game 30 before we all start talking about next year's draft and draft lottery...
-
So I guess it's safe to say you both think Yzerman is done? This is the team we will see all season? None of Vrana, Bertuzzi, Fabbri, etc will be traded for futures? I think it's pretty naive ("dumb") to think Yzerman is satisfied where this team / organization / prospect pool is at. He's stressed over, and over, and over again that this is going to take a long time. He's nowhere near done. No he's not "banking" on a top 3 pick next year, but we'll certainly be in the running (by design).
-
Two potential top 10 picks is worth more to this team than an overpaid Elias Pettersson. And yes, I do think Pettersson at $10M is an overpayment. And that's assuming Vancouver wouldn't match. The odds are much higher than that, but of course you know that... No one is saying we would be a bottom 10 team with Pettersson. We will however, be a bottom 10 team withOUT Pettersson. If we add Pettersson, I don't think there's any chance we're giving up a top 10 pick (unless that pick wins the lottery). The argument is, if we don't add Pettersson, we should get a top 5-10 pick, which this team desperately needs. Yeah, an offer sheet isn't happening. That's more of a pipe dream than winning next year's draft lottery in my opinion. It isn't happening, and for good reason.
-
A team has to win the draft lottery. We'll once again be in striking distance. Could be us. Regardless whether or not we win the lottery though, this team needs a top 3 talent out of next year's draft. Yzerman knows this.
-
A trade or two, acquiring futures (which I fully expect) could have a major impact on our overall standing this season though... But yeah, finishing 22nd and moving up the max number of spots to get Shane Wright is the dream scenario.

I agree that this has been a great offseason so far. Some quality upgrades while continuing to get younger. Our goaltending has improved (or at least on par and younger). Our defense has improved drastically. Leddy and Seider alone should provide some much needed offense and stability on the back end. Oesterle is just added depth, another Merrill / Nemeth. Our offense still needs a lot of work, and I think there's a good chance we lose a couple players up front in trades at some point this season. I still think it's in the team's best interest to wait another season before we really start to turn things around. Yzerman knows this, and I think at least one, potentially all three of Vrana, Bertuzzi, Fabbri will be traded at some point this season. We have a lot of really nice pieces coming, but we're still an elite player or two away from ending this rebuild. I fully expect another bottom 5-10 finish this season, which to me isn't the worst thing.

I completely agree. I want Veleno up with the Wings, and I think there's a strong chance he will be. However, if there's no room in the top 9, he absolutely should be playing top line minutes in Grand Rapids. Which might not be the worst thing, especially if he plays on a line with Raymond and / or Berggren. He played center in his short 5 game stint at the end of last season. I don't see any reason to believe he wouldn't do the same going forward.
-
Agreed. A Pettersson offersheet doesn't make much sense for this team right now. It's not worth 2-3 1st round picks (1-2 potentially top 5-10 picks, maybe even top 3). I think you can get a Pettersson caliber player in the top 3-5, especially the next two drafts. Wright and Savoie in '22, and Bedard and Fantilli could all be Pettersson level. I'd wait until after this season to explore a potential offersheet.
-
So in the past week Yzerman has acquired two guys (Nedeljkovic and Suter) that received Calder votes this past season for a 3rd round pick. Granted, both are older rookies (25 years old), but still quality adds giving up next to nothing...
-
Same...
-
Just seems like you bring him up specifically in every thread... lol I agree with adding a top 4 defenseman to push DeKeyser / Staal down, but I'm not so sure Koekkoek would be that. He's your prototypical 3rd pairing guy, and probably not much, if at all, an upgrade over the aforementioned...
-
What is your obsession with Koekkoek? He's a below average defenseman at best. There's probably half a dozen or so guys on the market that I would take over Koekkoek...
-
Absolutely brutal...
-
We definitely won't need the cap space. I assume you meant roster spot, which I agree. Unless both Raymond and Berggren push for a spot, in which case, great problem to have... I do wish Seattle had taken Namestnikov over Cholowski though... I am genuinely surprised by this... I thought Glendening would be a lifer in Detroit (Michigan)... He is very replaceable though...
-
In theory, yes. I don't see Gagner getting buried though...
-
If Glendening was offered a contract, and can't see him leaving...
