The most a team can be retain on a contract is 50%, and the reason Edmonton want to trade Lucic is to shed salary. They're not going to eat half, and even if they were willing to eat 25% (I don't think they would), we'd still have a $4.5M player for 6 more seasons (until he's 36) that probably won't be worth half that in 2-3 years time...

I hope not. At least I hope that's not the reason we'd draft Hughes... No matter how the top 5 goes, Hughes will be 2nd, 3rd or 4th on my wish list... I'd personally prefer Bouchard, Wahlstrom and Kotkaniemi over Hughes.

I doubt it. That is one horrendous contract. I'd love to get the 10th overall pick, but if it meant taking on Lucic, I'd probably pass...

Yeah, I listened a couple nights ago. Also read the article this morning... https://www.nhl.com/redwings/news/red-wings-looking-to-shore-up-blue-line-and-center-position/c-299140492 I really think our first pick is going to come down to Bouchard or Hughes. Dellandrea is a player I'm hoping slips to the 2nd round, but I can see him going in the mid-20's.

This is why I believe it will only be the teams that believe they're legit contenders that will be in on the Karlsson sweepstakes. I don't think it's just a matter of Ottawa allowing it though. I think it's against the CBA, and I'm too lazy to read through to figure it out too. Anyone with a better understanding on this want to chime in? Those players' rights were traded in the summer they were a UFA though. I'm sure Dorion would accept a late round pick in return for Karlsson's negotiating rights if he were a UFA now, and knew he couldn't get a deal done. That's why he's trying to make a trade now. He knows next summer will be no different, and Karlsson won't re-sign in Ottawa.

I've heard of teams granting permission to speak with management / coaches while under contract, but never players. If a team wants negotiating rights with a player, their rights are usual traded in the offseason. But again, that doesn't guarantee both sides will strike a deal. The player can still opt to hit free agency. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding... Otherwise, wouldn't every team interested in Karlsson be trying to work out a handshake deal before any potential trade? I also believe it will take more than $9M to lock Karlsson up long term. Unless he's going to a team that has a legit shot to win. I don't think we can provide that. At least not in the near future...

I always hear "work out a deal before the trade", but is that even legal? Isn't it against the CBA to negotiate with a player under contract with another team? If we could work out some sort of handshake deal beforehand (again, I don't think we can), I don't think that package would be enough. I'm not saying your proposed package is too high a price to pay (likely the opposite), I'm saying it's too high a price to pay for any pending UFA.

We still miss the playoffs and Karlsson walks after the season... Terrible trade. Smart. Hopefully Holland "stays the course" as well... I'd be open to signing Tavares or Carlson at the right price. Stay away from any other big name free agents / trades...

Just curious what people here think of Ryan Merkley. He's a top 5 talent offensively; thinks the game well, great skater, great hands, phenomenal passer, but is mediocre defensively and is said to have some "off ice issues". Because of this, I doubt the Wings would have any interest in him, but I think a kid that talented could be worth the gamble with one of our 30, 33, 36 picks (if he's still available). Merkley seems to be the definition of boom or bust potential. All the skill in the world, but may never put it all together, due to a "poor attitude"... Is this being overstated or is there legit reason for concern? I don't know, but coaches and teammates seem to talk highly of him. Not like they're going to bash him though... But if it's not coming from the people closest to him, I'd like to know where all the negative exposure is coming from... Is he worth the risk? I personally think he is, but know the Red Wings likely think otherwise.

No, he was referring to prospects specifically. At least that's what he said. Whether he meant it or not, time will tell...

Order of preference for me... Bouchard, Wahlstrom, Tkatchuk, Dobson.

What are you talking about? Did you even read what I said? I was basically agreeing with you, minus the part about Glendening being scratched... You actually think there's a remote possibility Blashill will healthy scratch Glendening? Not a chance. Where did I say that any kid was better than Helm and Abdelkader, let alone "every kid in the system"?... I simply think Helm and Abdelkader, along with Glendening would be a great "shutdown line". That's why I suggested forming that 4th line, bot because I think Athanasiou, Bertuzzi, Svechnikov, Rasmussen, or whoever else are necessarily better than them. You don't think we have 12 better forwards than Glendening but yet you're suggesting we should scratch him? Okay... Where did I say that Svechnikov couldn't jump ahead of Glendening? You're not making any sense...

I think most people would prefer a roster consisting of 4 quality scoring lines. You're definitely not the only one that wouldn't include Glendening in his roster. I like those lines a lot. The problem is, the same way Blashill won't demote Helm and Abdelkader to the 4th line, he won't scratch Glendening. If we're going for best possible lines, this is pretty damn close, but unfortunately, it would never happen...

So what you're saying is Holland should be calling Wilson to acquire O'Reilly?

I was never really "HYPED" about Svechnikov, but I believe the "sophomore slump" is a real thing. He score 51 points in 74 games in his rookie season. Svech will be fine.

I've always been a fan of O'Rielly as well. What do you think it would realistically take to get him out of Buffalo?

I'd be okay with these lines, I'd just personally have Svech in instead of signing Vanek. If there's an injury, recall Turgeon and move Athanasiou or Helm up if it's one of the top nine players.

Bertuzzi - Zetterberg - Nyquist Athanasiou - Larkin - Mantha Rasmussen - Nielsen - Svechnikov Abdelkader - Helm - Glendening I know that 4th line isn't going to happen, but that's what I'd like to see...
