Official 2018 NHL Amateur Entry Draft Discussion Thread
krsmith17 replied to LeftWinger's topic in General
Haha I'm only messing with you. I honestly have no idea on the quality work ESPN put out. I know they were always lower quality when it came to hockey, but I'm sure they've come a long way over the years. The Athletic puts out great content though. Highly recommend. As for the Hughes vs Bouchard debate, to be honest, I'd be happy with either, I just slightly lean more toward Bouchard. -

Meh, Tavares / Larkin sounds better... Seriously though, if he wants to go to a contender, Detroit probably won't be much of a consideration. If he wants to be "the guy", future captain, hockey crazed city with a brand new state of the art building, etc. Detroit should be up there at the top of his list...

Key there, "used to"... The Athletic > ESPN Trash... I'm not that high on McLeod, but I'd take him at 30 for sure. -

Chris Peters? Never heard of him... Oh, ESPN, makes sense... Who does he have us taking 30th overall? -
What about a defenseman to try and replace Karlsson?...

https://theathletic.com/398013/2018/06/19/corey-pronmans-2018-nhl-mock-draft-who-goes-after-rasmus-dahlin/ Pronman just came out with his mock draft and has us taking Evan Bouchard and Isac Lundestrom in the first round. -
I'm assuming Detroit will be among those 3-5 teams...?
-
Ottawa certainly did sell low on him. You'd have to think the recent rumors were the reason for that. Great trade for San Jose, assuming there's no more drama...

I don't think it would be enough and I wouldn't pay that price for any pending UFA. If it were a sign and trade (those never happen) I'd consider it for sure, but even then, like Swede mentioned, he's 28 years old now, and will be past his prime by the time this team is ready to compete. If we're giving up those kind of assets, I'd much prefer go after a 21-23 year old who can grow and develop with Larkin, Mantha and co.

You should never draft for size, but all else being equal, I'll take the bigger guy every time. Hughes and Bouchard don't really have many similarities in style of play, but in overall potential, I think they're on the same level. I think Bouchard has the better chance of reaching his ceiling because of the size advantage. Just my personal opinion. Craig Button is echoing the same sentiment as McKenzie along with many other draft analysts. The disparity between players ranked from 3 to around 7 or so is so minimal that he believes teams in that range could be putting more weight into positional need, and thinks Detroit will take one of Hughes, Dobson or Bouchard. -
Fair enough, but long term he seems like he could be a Glendening replacement, with hopefully a little more offensive punch. So what if he does look like he could replace Glendening (or another bottom 6 forward) right out of camp? Would you still send him down or give him a shot to start the season? I'd like to see him given a spot out of camp if he "earns it", but I don't think Red Wings management would, regardless how he plays...

If we could fit it under the cap, absolutely. Unfortunately, I don't see that as a possibility for Detroit.

Yeah, I was hopeful he'd develop into a solid bottom pairing defenseman, and was kind of surprised to see the organization give up on him so early. Disappointing, but probably not a huge loss. -
Are you talking this year? Or in general (long term)?

Sambrook is no longer Red Wings property, and will re-enter the draft. -

I'd say 33.3 / 33.3 / 33.3 who is taken first between Hughes / Bouchard / Dobson. I'd prefer Bouchard. You'd prefer Hughes. Cool. -

Doesn't come close? Yeah okay... He's been regarded as one of the best passers in the draft, has a much better shot than Hughes, better defensively, and the size and strength advantage. What does Hughes have over Bouchard? Speed? Whatevz. By the way, the knock on his skating has been debunked by many scouts. It's not at the level of Hughes or Dobson, but is still very good. -

Couldn't disagree more on Bouchard being "low reward". He may be a "safe pick" in the sense that there's virtually no chance he's a complete bust, but he has a ceiling as high as any of the 4 defenders in my opinion. -

There's no guarantee Holland and his scouts deem Zadina as BPA though. If they believe they can get their guy a couple spots back, why not "get cute"? No idea what you mean by the bold... -

I don't think anyone would consider it a reach at 6, but he wouldn't be my first choice. -

BUF - Dahlin CAR - Svechnikov MTL - Kotkaniemi OTT - Hughes ARI - Tkatchuk DET - ... What do you do? A lot of teams would be calling wanting to trade up for Zadina. Do you take him at 6, or trade back? I'm probably in the minority, but I think I'd trade back, gain another asset and hope for Bouchard at 7-9. Of course it would depend on the return, but for another late 1st / early 2nd, I think it's something you'd have to consider...
