2018 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread

I get it, and I'd probably have a little hate on for Tampa too if Yzerman wasn't the man down there. I just can't force myself to hate anything Yzerman has touched (built). In general though, I usually respect teams that beat us more than I hate them. It's not even like we had a big rivalry or anything with the Lightning, because like you said, they always beat us... I tend to lean more towards hating individual players over teams anyway. The only team, I really hate is Toronto, and that's only because everyone I know are Leafs fans. And to be honest, I don't even really hate them (don't tell anyway...), I just don't want them to EVER become a truly elite team or god forbid, win the Stanley Cup...

Why do so many Wings fans hate Tampa so much? I dont get it. Well, I guess I kinda do, but I'll always root for any team Yzerman is involved with. I'd love to see him win another Cup, first as a general manager.

The site must randomize players every hour... No rhyme or reason... You need to take any mock draft with a grain of salt (even the great McKenzie and Button), but maybe a pound of salt would be more appropriate for this one...

3 goalies? I think you're looking at that wrong... The only goalie they have us taking is Justus Annunen in the 3rd round (81st overall).

I'd consider Wahlstrom or Tkatchuk if the top 5 goes Dahlin, Svechnikov, Zadina, Boqvist, Bouchard, but I'd still probably lean toward Hughes or Dobson, or preferably trade back at that point. If Bouchard is still on the board and they take Wahlstrom or Tkatchuk, I'd be a little pissed off. Both are going to be great players, but our need for an elite defenseman is too big to take a winger at 6 in my opinion...

Meh, I like speed as much as anybody, but skill and smarts should be number one on everyone's list. Larkin has all 3. I like Athanasiou a lot, but he's one of our better trade chips right now. Bertuzzi looks like he'll be a very good middle six winger. Helm is a good bottom six winger / center. Jensen is a good bottom pair defenseman. None are untouchable (except Larkin) in my opinion.

This is probably one of the least reputable mock drafts out there, but I don't like it... We need offense just as much as we need defense. Ideally we'd take at least one center and winger with those 4 picks. I still say best player available, but 2 defensemen and 2 forwards would be my ideal. Another one that has us taking Bouchard. I like that much about it anyway...

This may be our only hope in getting a deal done for that 10th overall pick (or any top 10 pick). Chiarelli is not a smart man...

Who are you kidding? It will be... Helm - Nielsen - Abdelkader Rasmussen - Glendening - Svechnikov

Ok. I read the article. Now what? I'm not sure what you got from the article, but what I got is that Chiarelli doesn't want to wait for the 10th overall pick to develop, he wants immediate help, preferably a right shot defenseman. Jensen obviously isn't close to what they'd be looking for in a right-handed defenseman, and DeKeyser just gives them more of what they already have. According to the article, they probably wouldn't have much interest in our Vegas pick either. One interesting takeaway was that they could be interested in a "young offensive defenceman on the cusp of being an NHL regular". I'm not sure how I feel about giving up Hronek, or if they would even be interested (he may still be a year out), but it could be an option. Maybe we could put together a package including Hronek and Nyquist. Probably still not enough though... Unfortunately, we're not a very good trade partner for a team looking for high impact, right-handed defensemen... Maybe if Green were still under contract, he would be a trade chip... Oh well...

You said you agree that it would take more and then you offer less... Athanasiou, 2nd and 3rd round picks > player dump, 3rd pair defenseman and 2nd round pick...

Wahlstrom wouldn't likely be available at 10, 11 or 12, but then again, he'll probably be gone before 9 as well. One of those picks might get us Veleno though, so I'd definitely consider it. Regardless, a very good player is going to drop to the middle of the first like every year. I just hope Holland is looking at potential trade options to move up, especially where we have those 3 picks between 29-36.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'd add to it, but without giving up next year's first, the deal probably wouldn't get done, regardless how many 2nd tier assets we could throw in... How about Athanasiou, 2nd, 3rd, Saarijarvi and Nastasiuk...

    Boqvist

A lot of people are projecting the Wings to take Bouchard. I really, really, REALLY hope we get him at 6...

Same. I'd prefer Jets vs Caps too. Only because I drew Washington (and Anaheim) in a blind draw. Winnipeg win, I'm happy because that's been my team all playoffs. Washington win, I'm happy because I win $160.

Happy we signed him. Hopefully he can make the Wings out of camp. If not, he'll provide added depth in Grand Rapids, for a team that is / will be lacking offensive weapons.

Absolutely. I agree. As long as they're players in the 26-28 range, and they're not going to cost an insane amount, I'm game for adding a high end UFA or two.

    Official 2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread

I hope Kronwall has a strong, healthy final season. He will likely retire after this season. There's no way he should be offered another contract, and he definitely won't sign with another team. I'd consider offering Howard another short, 2-3 year contract at a slightly lesser cap hit, depending on who else is available. We're going to need a stop gap goaltender before Larsson, Petruzzelli, or Fulcher are ready to make the jump. Nyquist should be traded at next year's deadline. He should garner a decent return. Not as high as Tatar because he'll be a pending UFA, but you'd have to think he'd get us a 2nd round pick, at minimum. Like every free agent class, most of these players will re-up with their current clubs. The few that may become available, probably won't end up in Detroit. And honestly I'm okay with that. We need to continue to draft and develop. Just remember that the players listed were draft 2nd overall, 15th, undrafted, 9th, 3rd, 22nd, 2nd, 7th, 5th, 6th, 12th, 6th, 12th, 4th, 22nd, 216th, undrafted, 108th, 61st, 39th, 152nd, 2nd, undrafted. It's very likely we could have another very high (top 5) pick next year, and hopefully get that franchise player we so desperately need. That to go along with Larkin, Mantha, Rasmussen, Cholowski, *Bouchard*, Hronek, etc. should be a very good core of players. I'm not sure we'll get Hughes next year, but piggy backing off my last point, I think we'll have a really good chance. We'll have a shot at the number one, and likely a top 5 pick, so regardless, we should be getting a very good player in what is expected to be another very good, top heavy draft. I'm definitely aboard the 2019 HYPE train though. Fortunately, I don't expect this to be a long rebuild. With a bit of luck and some shrewd moves by our GM, I think we could be right back in the mix in the next 2-3 years...

Official 2018 Off Season *Rebuild* Thread

I've always been a big Helm supporter. I think he's a very good bottom 6 player. Abdelkader and Glendening are meh. In saying that, I'd much rather "throw the towel in on them", than potentially stunt the growth of a talented young kid by playing them 10 minutes a night with Glendening. If it's not Abdelkader and Helm on the 4th line with Glendening, who will it be? Svechnikov and Rasmussen? I think that's what we will end up seeing. But it's definitely not what I'd like to see... Realistically what more could we expect to get in a trade for one of them by playing them for a year on the 3rd line with Nielsen, rather than the 4th line with Glendening? A 3rd round pick instead of a 4th? A 4th instead of a 5th? I don't think it's going to make a whole lot of a difference in their overall trade value. How would you structure the lines? Yeah, it would be a very good 4th line. To be honest, I don't care too much about individual player cap hits when it comes to making up lines though. As long as the team is under the cap, that's all that should matter to a coach. That's what young players on ELC's are for. The coach shouldn't care if his 3rd line produces twice as much, making half as much money as his 4th line. That's on the GM.

Official 2018 Off Season *Rebuild* Thread

I don't think any team looking to trade for Abdelkader, Helm or Glendening are going to do so for their offensive upside though. If any team is interested in acquiring any of those three, it would likely be a Cup contender looking for depth in their bottom 6... defensively responsible, can kill penalties and shut down other team's top lines. We would likely have to eat a little salary on Abby's contract, but he's not going anywhere anyway. I think Helm and Glendening are easily tradeable now, and will only get easier to trade over the next year or two. I think the best way to get the most out of those three players is to put them together and formulate one of the better shutdown 4th lines in the league. Stop f***ing putting offensively talented kids on the 4th line with Glendening!
