I never said signing first, worrying about the cap after was smart and calculated. It's the opposite. But that's what Holland does. He did it this past summer and I'm sure he'd have no problem doing it this summer. You think getting something, anything for Mrazek is smart. I disagree.
-
Coreau was just named AHL's player of the week with back to back shutouts against the leagues top offensive team, Manitoba.
-
Yup, we absolutely should go after Tavares. And if the off chance that he actually wants to come here, we sign him and worry about the cap after, like we do every offseason. We could easily offload a couple contracts to make it work under the cap. The trade deadline is not the time to be freeing up cap space for the slim chance you may be able to lure a big name UFA the following summer. We should be making smart, calculated decisions, to make this team better 2-3 years from now. In my opinion, that isn't trading your young goalie that still has potential to be very good for a s***ty draft pick. I'm not saying we should qualify Mrazek, but I am saying that IF he keeps up his current level of play (which I believe he can), then we should. The mid round draft pick just isn't enough for me to give up on Mrazek at this point.
-
What are we giving up and what contract did he sign?
-
And that's a chance I'd be willing to take. I don't see why we should be in any rush to move Mrazek. I'd rather keep him. If he plays well down the stretch, we qualify him this summer. If he plays poorly, we let him walk. Losing out on a 3rd round pick is well worth taking the chance on Mrazek (continue) turning it around in my opinion.
-
Draft picks are great if they're first or second rounders, but anything beyond that, it's a complete crap shoot. Sure - a 3rd round draft pick could turn out 4 years from now, but I won't hold my breath... You don't give assets away, which is what you originally suggested, for mid to late round draft picks, unless you're trying to get rid of the player. We got a 6th rounder for Kindl two years ago, because we wanted to move on, and there was a log jam on defense. Sure, it's good that we got Reilly Webb for a player we didn't want, but the chance of him ever becoming a full time NHLer, is slim to none. Is Mrazek really on the same level as Kindl? We just want to get rid of him? That's absurd... I disagree with the bold. I'd personally rather hold on to him for the next few months and make a decision this summer, than trade him now for a 3rd round pick. But again, IF the organization has already given up on him, I guess it would be wise to get whatever they can get. I just disagree with the decision to give up on him...
-
What makes you think he's any closer to our Swedes than any of the others in the league though? Is this actually a thing? If so, you may be right. But I find it hard to believe that he's closer to players a decade older than some that are in his age group...
-
Yes, Mrazek is an asset, but not because he's played well these past few weeks. Every single player, prospect and pick are considered assets. Mrazek is no different. It's just a matter of opinion what he's worth. I think today he's worth more than a mid round draft pick. I think in a few years we could look back and really regret such a trade. And for what? A 3rd round draft pick? You know what the odds are in getting a player of equal or better value than Mrazek around 80th overall? Slim to none. So why make the trade? We don't need the cap space. We don't have a young stud being blocked from coming up. Why not hold onto Mrazek for the remainder of this season, see how he plays down the stretch and make a decision in the offseason? People forget that he just turned 26 last week, which is relatively young for a goaltender. I'm not saying he will be elite or anything, but if he can be a legitimate starter / stop gap while we're waiting on the next big thing (Petruzzelli, Larsson, or whoever), that's a hell of a lot better option than Howard in my opinion. But whatever, unfortunately I think Mrazek gets traded very soon (maybe today)...
-
Sure, give away assets. Makes sense... Whether you believe in Mrazek or not, trading him for a mid round draft pick would be poor asset management. Unless of course, Holland has already decided that he's not going to re-sign him. That too, would be a mistake. Let Mrazek play the remainder of this season, and make a decision in the offseason. There's no rush.

There will be plenty teams in the league that will likely have more prominent Swedes on their team than the Red Wings in 2-3 years time. I'm not saying he wouldn't be willing to negotiate, I just think he will end up testing free agency. Regardless, I wouldn't trade for Erik Karlsson. Wait until 2019 to see if we could sign him.
-
Yeah, but just being in the state and seeing them every now and then isn't the same as going to the rink and working side by side every day. I'm still hopeful Lidstrom will come back as a defense coach...
-
Tell them to take Howard or F*** Off! Trading Mrazek for peanuts is a huge mistake.
-
Franzen is done. Zetterberg will likely be done in the next couple years. Same goes for Kronwall and Ericsson. Nyquist may be gone this week. I don't see Karlsson having much interest unless we draft Dahlin. Imagine a top pair of Dahlin - Karlsson for the next decade...
-
"start" being the key word here. It would take MUCH more than that, and it's just not worth it for one year (to negotiate a new deal)... Nah, I think Karlsson tests free agency regardless. Unless of course, he really likes the fit with whatever team trades for him, and they offer max term / dollars. I like Karlsson a lot, but I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable giving up what it would take to get him, or the max contract it would take to get him locked up...
-
I'd love to have Karlsson on this team. What team wouldn't? But I wouldn't pay the price it's going to take to get him here for only one guaranteed season. I'd much rather go after him as a UFA in 2019. We need to build our blueline through the draft (Dahlin?) and trading for young, unproven, high potential prospects (Foote?)... F*** giving up the farm for what could potentially be a rental.
-
Dahlin is not "out of reach". We may not have the best odds in the lottery, but like Philadelphia demonstrated in last year's draft, it's very possible to jump up several spots. Let's assume Arizona finish dead last, giving them an 18% chance at the number one pick. Pretty good odds, but that's also an 82% chance they don't get that pick. The way the lottery is set up, there's no guarantees. Right now, we have a 6.7% chance at Dahlin, and a 20.9% chance at a top 3 pick. If we sell hard at the deadline like we should be, we could slightly better those odds. I do want us to better our odds, but at the same time, I don't want to see us lose every single game remaining either. Either way, I have a good feeling we'll jump up this year. Here's to hoping...
-
I agree. Not saying he's a key to this team's future success, but for now I like him as a 3rd pair guy. Ouellet on the other hand sucks. I'd have no problem waiving or trading him for peanuts.
-
I wouldn't lump Jensen and Ouellet together. Ouellet sucks. Jensen is a perfect 3rd pairing defenseman. Smart player, good mobility, good first pass. As long as we can re-sign him again on a relatively cheap contract, I'd keep him around. He's been playing great the past few games, eating a ton of minutes.
-
Where did you see this? Link? I'd f***ing love that trade.
-
I agree. We do not need to get rid of either of our goaltenders right now. There is no rush. In my opinion a 2nd is also somewhat of a low offer though. I don't trade Mrazek right now unless a team like Philadelphia gets desperate and drastically overpays, which isn't going to happen. If they call looking for a goalie, I'll trade Howard for a 2nd or 3rd, even retain a bit of salary if need be, but I'm holding onto Mrazek at least until the end of this season.

I want this kid so bad... -
Yeah, it's his awful trade history that makes him THE worst GM in the league. Man he's made some terrible trades in his short time with Edmonton and previously Boston. Mind blowing.
-
Not sure how I feel about this...
-
Thanks! I still say zero chance Glendening gets us Kapanen though. Leivo maybe, but not Kapanen.
-
Where did you hear this? Link? Yeah, we'd obviously do it in a heartbeat, which is why I doubt there's any truth to it. No way the Leafs would give up Kapanen for Glendening... I doubt anyone trades much of anything for Ouellet. Maybe a late round pick, similar to the Kindl trade a couple years ago. I'd prefer to move Tatar, but Nyquist and Green should both be moved for good returns (high picks / high end prospects). The fact that we offered Mrazek for a f***ing 3rd round pick kind of pisses me off, but I'm glad the Flyers turned it down...
