Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

Yup, this for sure. But then, like always, we have others on the complete opposite side of the spectrum as well. "AA sucks", " no big loss if he goes to the KHL", "not an important piece to the future", etc, etc. When the reality is, as of right now, he's a highly skilled player that hasn't yet proven that he can produce regularly in a top 6 role. Will he if given the opportunity? I think so. But until he's given the opportunity, it's still an unknown. I also think it's possible that he could develop into a better player than Nyquist (this coming from one of Nyquist's biggest fans), but to say he already is, is flat out wrong. Athanasiou has a ton of potential. I hope he reaches that potential as a Red Wing.

    DRW Training Camp 2017

Shine scores again. 2-2. Also hit the post early. Good showing for the free agent signing early on. Rasmussen is also looking good so far.

    DRW Training Camp 2017

Yup, hopefully Holland is keeping a close eye on those two and sweet talking Francis... The Canes have a nice looking prospect pool. Gauthier is another player to watch tonight.

    Why?

    DRW Training Camp 2017

Svechnikov and to a lesser extent Holmstrom should stand out among this forward group. I'm really looking forward to see what Rasmussen shows in this tourney. I've only seen him play a few games a couple years ago in the World Juniors, and even then I obviously wasn't paying any real attention to him specifically. Hopefully he's right there with Svech. I'm also looking forward to see Smith, Zablocki and Gallant. The defense is a little more potent than the forwards this year, which hasn't been the case in years. I'm hoping Cholowski really stands out above everyone else. Also looking forward to see Hronek, Saarijarvi and Sambrook. Fun Fact: Invitee Luke Esposito's uncle is Mark Messier.

    I'll say low $2M range... $2.2M for 2 years.

    P.A. Parenateau PTO

I don't think that article is correct. I'm pretty sure we're left with $933,333 after Franzen is placed on LTIR. As I said previously, there would be minimal space if Athanasiou isn't re-signed. I think he will be signed though. Something's gotta give.

Where are we getting the $1.4M?

I fully expect Athanasiou to be a Red Wings this season.

    P.A. Parenateau PTO

There will be roster spots if Athanasiou doesn't get a contract and no one from Grand Rapids starts in Detroit. After Holland clears cap space? Can't wait for that to happen...

    P.A. Parenateau PTO

No harm in PTO's, just increases competition. However I'd be surprised if either Parenteau or Booth are signed to contracts by the Red Wings. No roster spots and no cap space.

    The D conundrum

Detroit Daley, Green, DeKeyser, Jensen, Kronwall, Ericsson, Ouellet, Sproul Sproul may start the season on IR. If not, they will likely start with 8 defensemen, until someone else (Kronwall) inevitably gets injured. If Sproul gets waived (I doubt he will), he will likely get claimed. Grand Rapids Hicketts, Russo, Lashoff, McIlrath, Renouf, Hronek and McCarron as the number 7. Saarijarvi should get big minutes in Toledo and be first injury callup. Sulak will go play overseas. Tansey likely won't get a sniff of action in GR, unless there are a ton of injuries.

Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

I wasn't a fan of the Daley signing either, it made no sense to me. We already had too many defensemen signed and we didn't have the cap space. However I think you're selling Daley short if you think he's a 3rd pair at best. I'd say at this stage of his career, he's a very good 2nd pair defenseman. He's on a great contract, just not a great fit where this team is at right now. Also, Jensen is on the roster and will likely be in the lineup every night, assuming he doesn't royally f*** up or get injured. Russo didn't impress me much, and I'd much prefer to have Ouellet and / or Sproul in the lineup over him. I agree with pretty much everything else though. Holland and company definitely haven't done themselves any favors with all the bad signings over the years. It's finally starting to bite them in the a**. We desperately need to made some trades to bring some young talent and offload some bad contracts.

Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

Or maybe Jake Bean?... I think that is what kliq was referring to though. Maybe not a prospect like you and I are talking about, but a youngish up and coming defenseman that may be slotted on the 2nd / 3rd pair, but has the potential to be a number one, like a Trouba or Theodore. I'd be okay with going hard after any of these guys, but of course we won't because trades are hard...

Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2017/09/high_probability_red_wings_and.html Here's what Babaev said about Athanasiou's future in an Instagram post that was translated from Russian: "I represent Athanasiou in Russia, we are currently considering different options, but we can say that with a high probability Andreas will continue his career in the KHL and he is ready to go to Russia. Will this be AK Bars, as they write in I can not confirm or disprove this information, but now Athanasiou is only studying the options, collecting information about the cities, including consulting with Pavel Datsyuk, who is familiar with the joint performances for Detroit. Most clubs are occupied by legionary positions. Athanasiou is a player of such caliber that he will find a place in any case. There are no such hockey players on the market and are not expected in the near future."

What makes you think this? Have you heard anything on what kind of contract he was offered by the unknown KHL team? PVD had a great post a few pages back on what sort of contract we can guess he might have been offered to play in the KHL.
