    Off-season moves

    #RedWings signed RW Martin Frk to one-year deal. Two-way, $650,000 and $250,000.

    Keith Petruzzelli

Can't see that pic? Is it of BIG RAS?

    Are you sure?...

    Franson to Preds

I didn't think the Daley signing was a very good one based on the current state of this team, but I don't think that signing should have anything to do with re-signing any RFA's. If we really needed (wanted) to sign Daley, it "should be" easy enough to shed that extra $1-2M to sign the remaining RFA's (Tatar and Athanasiou). It was never really the cap space that I was worried about when we signed Daley (he signed a very cap friendly deal), it was the roster spot...

    Keith Petruzzelli

Yeah, it's hard not to love this pick. I don't think there's any question that he was our best value pick (potential vs where he was selected) and quite possibly one of the best value picks in the entire draft. The only other one I can think of off the top of my head would be, the Kings taking Vilardi at 11... Now THAT was a steal...

    Vegas Golden Knights

As the Golden Knights sit right now, they have 16 forwards, not including the two on LTIR (Clarkson and Grabovski) that are waiver eligible (Neal, Smith, Eakin, Perron, Haula, Lindberg, Bellemare, Karlsson, Marchessault, Pulkkinen, Carrier, Leipsic, Thompson, Matteau, Tynan and Nosek), plus one waiver exempt that will definitely be on the opening night roster (Shipachyov). The defense is just as crowded with 11 waiver eligible defensemen (Garrison, Sbisa, Stoner, McNabb, Merrill, Miller, Engelland, Reinhart, Hunt, Schmidt (RFA) and Casto), plus one waiver exempt that will likely (should) be on the opening night roster (Theodore). That's a total of 29 players to fill 21 vacancies. McPhee will likely attempt to make another trade or two, but there's no guarantee teams will be looking to add the lower level players that he would likely be looking to shed. Quite a few of the players listed are borderline NHLers, that would likely slip through waivers with ease. My question is, would Nosek be one of the players exposed to waivers? And if he were, would we try to get him back? I think he'll probably start the season as Vegas' 13th forward or maybe even on their 4th line, but he may become victim to the numbers game. I don't think Nosek was a huge loss by any stretch, but it would be funny, and somewhat telling of the state of this team, if we didn't end up losing anyone in the expansion draft...

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

According to Elliotte Friedman, Tatar is asking for $5.3M and the Red Wings are offering $4.1M... Not sure what kind of term was attached to that offer... If true, I don't blame Tatar for not accepting, regardless of term. He shouldn't be asked to sign for over a million less than Nielsen, and less than Abdelkader and Ericsson among others. I don't think Tatar's ask is astronomically high, but I'd still prefer a sign and trade. Or sign Tatar long term and trade Nyquist. Something needs to be done to shake things up with this team...

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

Letting Filppula and Hudler walk for nothing didn't kill us, but it would have been nice to get something for them. It's a lot harder to do that though when your team is still competing in the playoffs every year. It is and should be viewed as a very different situation now though. To let Tatar walk for nothing as a middling team would be a huge mistake. Say what you will about Tatar, but he does have value, and a lot of teams would likely be interested, to give their top 6 a boost. If it goes to arbitration and he receives the one year contract, and we're unable to get him signed at some point this season (for less than he's asking), we need to aggressively shop him at or before the trade deadline. A lot of players have been overpaid by $0.5-1M, and you can afford to do that with a few players, but not every player. It's unfortunate that all the role players are the ones that seem to have been overpaid, but just because they have been overpaid, doesn't necessarily mean we should be willing to do the same with every other player now. I hope Holland doesn't budge on his current price, and Tatar forces his hand to trade him in a package for a top pair defenseman.

    2017 Opening Day Roster

I think a LOT would have to go right for us to get close to the playoffs this year, but I don't think we're going to finish bottom 5 in the league or last in the division. Florida has gotten significantly worse, and I don't see Buffalo or Boston being much (if at all) better than us on paper either. Last season was our worst in over 25 years, and I don't think we will finish with less than 79 points this season. Virtually every player (aside from Zetteberg) had down years last year. If the majority of the team can show even a slight improvement on this past season, we're going to be a better team. That, along with the continued natural progression of the young guys, and I think we will see a spike of at least 10 points in the standings. I'd love to get one of Svechnikov or Dahlin, but I think we'll have to get lucky in the draft lottery to have a chance at one of them.

    2017 Opening Day Roster

We will have approximately $6.2M in cap space after Franzen is placed on LTIR, with 10 forwards (Zetterberg, Nyquist, Nielsen, Mantha, Larkin, Abdelkader, Helm, Sheahan, Glendening, Witkowski), 8 defensemen (Kronwall, Ericsson, Daley Green, DeKeyser, Jensen, Ouellet, Sproul) and 2 goaltenders (Howard, Mrazek) on the active roster. That's a total of 20 of the typical 23-man roster. RFA's Tatar and Athanasiou need to be re-signed, which will likely cost between $7-7.5M. That combine with the addition of one more forward from Grand Rapids would put us approximately $2M over the salary cap. Either a trade is going to need to be made, or someone else (Kronwall / Ericsson) is going to have to end up on LTIR. Without any other moves made, I'd like to see something like this... Nyquist - Zetterberg - Mantha Tatar - Larkin - Athanaisou Helm - Nielsen - Frk Abdelkader - Sheahan - Glendening Witkowski Daley - Green DeKeyser - Jensen Ouellet - Sproul Ericsson / Russo Mrazek Howard LTIR Franzen Kronwall

    Development Camp

I'm most excited about all of the positive reviews on Cholowski. Sounds like his skating, passing and vision (arguably the three most important attributes of a defenseman) are borderline elite. I really hope he develops into a top pair (number one) defenseman.

    Off-season moves

Yeah, I'll never actively root against the Red Wings, and I'm not even going to say that I expect them to bottom out, but in such a top heavy draft, it wouldn't be the worst thing getting one of Dahlin, Svechnikov or Tkachuk in next year's draft. Dahlin is already being compared to Karlsson, the way he can skate and dictate play. We don't really need any more wingers, but it would be cool to have the Svech bros together. Svechnikov could be the most skilled of the three, and has the potential to be a Tarasenko type player. If Tkachuk is as good as his brother Matthew and dad Keith, he could be a great add as well. Best case scenario (outside of winning the Cup...), all of the young guys take a huge step forward, we finish just outside the playoffs and pull a Flyers of this past season, jumping way up into the top 3 of the draft lottery.

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

I'm not even sure I'd be comfortable with that contract to be honest. I think my cutoff is right around what Holland offered ($5Mx5).

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

A lot of people pretty confident that we trade Green this year. I wouldn't be at all shocked if he's not moved at the deadline, nor would I be shocked if we extend him beyond this season.

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

No. I wouldn't. I'm okay with the Wings proposed $5M x 5. If Tatar insists on $6M, the most I'd give him is 3 years. Otherwise, let it go to arbitration and do whatever you can to move him this season for a defenseman.

    Off-season moves

I was under the impression that a team can go up to 10% over the cap in the offseason, through training camp, but had to be cap compliant (under the $75M ceiling) the day before the season opener... A team can not surpass the ceiling at any point during the season, until after the trade deadline. Teams are permitted to go a certain amount (10%?) over with IR and / or bonuses (which would then carry over to the following season's cap)... Can someone with a better understanding clarify this...
  18. krsmith17

    Off-season moves

I don't think that's right... We have $2,278,788 in cap space remaining, plus the $3,954,545 once we LTIR Franzen, which is $6,233,333 to sign Tatar and Athanasiou. Tatar will likely get around $5M, which only leaves around $1-1.25M to sign Athanasiou. I think AA will likely get more than that, which may lead to another move needing to be made to be cap compliant. Whether that's trading a player, waiving a player or LTIRing another player...

    Off-season moves

Does he really though? If that plan is to spend above the cap and worry about it after training camp again, I'm not sure if that's the best plan... I'd welcome Vanek back if we could trade one of Tatar or Nyquist for a top pair defenseman... Hell, I'd even go that route if we could trade one for a high end prospect and / or a pick. Sign Vanek and trade Tatar / Nyquist in a package for a Trouba / Dumba type, or for a prospect like Montour / Sanheim / Bean / Fabbro / McLeod / Gauthier... Get it done Kenny!

    Off-season moves

I just don't see how it's possible with the limited cap space, and Tatar and Athanasiou still to be signed. The only way it's doable is if Holland manages to make a trade, and that's not going to happen...

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

I think most would agree with this. An argument can be made for any / all of Nielsen, Abdelkader, Helm, Glendening, Ericsson being bad contracts. The thing that people disagree with is Tatar being one of those "bad" players (contracts).

I was more so responding to the plastic ice comment. What makes you so sure it's real ice though? If it is, it appears to be extremely poor quality. Where are they practicing in that vid?

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

http://www.tsn.ca/report-tatar-red-wings-stuck-on-term-1.802754 Sounds like both sides are okay with the salary (around $5M), and term is the only sticking point. Tatar wants 7 and the Wings want 5...
