I agree with DeGraa on this one. I don't understand how people think this was selfish. Smith took exception to a hit he felt was a little on the dirty side, and wanted to drop the gloves. Big deal... If he knew that fight was going to result in him missing a week (minimum), I'm sure he would have thought otherwise, but the likelihood of an injury, especially an infection, was extremely slim. The chances of injury were likely smaller than what "could" have happened in that hit from behind by Foligno. Hockey is the fastest, most physical sport on the planet, in my opinion, even more so than football / rugby / lacrosse because of the speed of the game. Guys are going to get hurt, and fighting is probably the least likely cause of injury in the NHL. Were you people upset when Ericsson stood up for Helm when he took a dirty hit from Nolan in the LA game? I personally loved it, and I wish more of our guys would do it. I'm not saying I want a pure goon on our team that can barely skate either, I just wouldn't mind to see some more overall team toughness, and see guys sticking up for one another. I'm by no means, a huge fighting advocate but I do think it definitely belongs in the game.

Yeah, definitely not a tough call. I like seeing Cleary in the lineup but I would choose Callahan over him. So Callahan definitely plays, Cleary unfortunately is benched and Nestrasil is undoubtedly waived...
-
Jesusberg, I love games Do I choose one label (Play, Bench, Waive) for each player? or can I use one more than once?... lol
-
wings1940, you clearly haven't been watching Cleary the few games that he has played, and you are just going on blind hate from the past couple years. He has been playing great so far this season, and definitely better than Nestrasil, and Andersson too in my opinion...
-
Why are people comparing Nestrasil to Cleary? Cleary isn't the reason Nestrasil got exposed and claimed on waivers. Cleary wasn't going to be waived, nor should he have been. Cleary brings so much more than what he shows on the ice to this team, the experience and leadership he provides, on and off the ice, can't just be replaced, and certainly not by a 23 year old kid. If not Nestrasil, Jurco would have been sent down, and maybe in hindsight that would have been the better choice. But where is all of this upside that everyone sees in Nestrasil? I just don't get it. He was a body on the ice for 13 games, a big body sure, but that's about it. He could barely crack the Grand Rapids line up last season and to be honest should have never cracked our lineup this season. It would have been nice to see him clear and provide some support down in Grand Rapids this year but in reality he probably never would have cracked the Wings lineup on a full time basis, not this year, not next year, not ever. We have a ton of more skilled guys knocking on the door, he will not be missed. We even have a player that we signed in the offseason who is similar in stature but much more skilled, in Tomas Nosek. Good luck in Carolina Nestrasil, unfortunately you will probably end up down in Charlotte after 30 days...

I feel bad for those of you that are blaming Jack for trusting his parents... I really do...

Kindl will be a healthy scratch once again.

Agree completely Jesusberg. I have the same relationship with my parents and sister. Hell, I've even given my credit card and pin to friends if they were going on a beer run or whatever. No one should expect family and friends to steal from them, and obviously he didn't. Like was mentioned before, this likely happens a lot with these young guys making so much money, but luckily everyone's parents aren't complete assholes... If I were making millions, the first person I would go to and the last person I would expect to steer me wrong or steel from me would be my parents... Terrible situation..

Jesusberg, Callahan wouldn't have to pass through waivers to come up would he? Just if he were to be sent down again?... I agree, he would definitely be claimed, if had to pass through waivers again. Let's hope it doesn't come to that... nyquististhefuture, I'm not sure what "flashes" you seen, but I didn't. To be honest, I'd be surprised if he's anything more than a 20/30 point guy, and even that's being generous... Sure, it would have been nice to get a 7th out of a team for him, but it's not the end of the world either...

And apparently there were other teams intesested in claiming Nestrasil but Carolina had first dibs because they were lowest in the standings. I'm really surprised at this, he really didn't show much in his stint with the Wings. Oh well, no huge loss... I'm thankful for that Kip. Callahan is definitely the better player in my opinion. I really hope he gets another shot with the Wings in the near future.
-
Wow, I really didn't expect that. Oh well, all the best to Nestrasil.
-
I doubt it's a win or lose situation in tonight's game, but if they don't string some wins together soon and are not in a playoff spot by the new year, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he is shown the door...

Same with me. That's what was so great about redwingscentral.com, they covered all prospects from the Griffins to junior to Europe. They often times had quotes from management whether it be Ken Holland, Ryan Martin, Jiri Fischer or the coaching staff. They're definitely being missed...

Well to be fair, about 90% of American based websites will not allow residents of Canada to stream videos from them. Of course, there are always ways around these things...

He's been back and forth between Grand Rapids and Toledo for over a year now. I think that's part of his problem. He's not strong enough mentally yet, to push through the adversity.
-
What the f*ck? Seriously? I hope we get to see one of the kids in his place, and Kindl in over Lashoff...

Larkin is not a special yet... He was just drafted a few months ago and is just 18 years old. I'm not saying I'm expecting a huge offensive explosion from him or anything, but I believe he will be a great prospect and future player for the Wings. He should be untouchable for the reasons already stated. He is our top center prospect in a position of weakness for us right now.
-
Wow, really? That sucks... I think he is more deserving of ice time then a few others on the team right now, namely Mark Zengerle. Oh well, I hope he can produce down in the ECHL, get some confidence before he's called up again, and finally establish himself in the AHL... hopefully.
-
I'm not saying that Jurco would have been sent down, but anyone else think he was feeling the pressure, knowing that a decision was to be made within the next few days, with Weiss coming off IR. Great timing on his first goal of the season last night, let's hope he can build off that and get the production rolling.

Nestrasil will definitely clear waivers. My biggest concern in this move is that it will more than likely push Frk out of the lineup. Frk really needs to get back into some games here, I still have hope for the kid to pull through. He's improved on his skating big time and he has a nasty shot. I think he has the potential to be a Jiri Hudler type of player at the NHL level. I hope Zengerle sits when Nestrasil is assigned...

Smith did finish the game. I'm sure he's fine.

If you're looking for a great breakfast spot, I highly recommend Hudson's Café. Amazing food. I make sure to stop in at least once every trip.

I'm confused... Where did I compare Larkin to Mantha in any way???... The only thing I said is that the Red Wings brass has mentioned that they can see Larkin centering a line with Mantha in the future, which isn't at all too far fetched. I think their skill sets would complement each other quite well. Larkin is a great two way center with a ton of speed and play-making ability, while Mantha is a big winger that also has a fair amount of speed and ton of skill who has unbelievable finish ability. I don't think Larkin is at all as skilled as Mantha at this point and I don't really think he will ever get there, but that's not out of the question either. Mantha is a special type of player, while at this point Larkin seems to be a really good 1st round pick.
-
I usually agree with you number9, but explain how you see Larkin, an 18 year old, first round pick from just a few months ago, as being overrated... I'll admit, he is one of the few Wings prospects that I know very little about, I've never seen him play, but everything I've heard and read about the kid points to him being a damn good player. He should be one of a handful of prospects the Wings have in the system right now that is as close to untouchable as they come, especially playing a position the Wings are really lacking depth for the future. A few things I've read about the kid... "elite-level power forward", "high level of offensive ability", "speed and skill", "incredible skating", "great on-ice vision", "works hard", "responsible two-way game"... A few thing I've heard about the kid... "strong two-way center", "good shut-down center", "Helm-like speed with better scoring ability", "great hands", "guts, lots of skill, lots of speed", "great leadership ability". I'm also pretty sure the Wings brass see Larkin and Mantha pairing up as a top line duo in the future. He's putting up solid numbers with University of Michigan, 8 points (2 goals, 6 assists) in 9 games so far this season. I don't think he is or should be going anywhere.

Yeah, Ansar Khan always has pretty good coverage leading up to the season, in the prospect tournament and training camp but once the Red Wings season begins it's 95% parent club coverage with a few short articles covering top prospects.
