That is a big IF isn't it? Do you have a link where anyone told Quine to work on his defense?...
-
None of those signings had an impact on the eventual signing or letting go of Quine... They could have signed every player you listed and still offered Quine a contract before June 1st by dropping a player with less potential / upside, like I mentioned numerous times... Why do you keep bringing up these players that have been signed when I specifially named players not on that list? If you can honestly say that you think we were better off keeping Trevor Parkes, Willie Coetzee, Brent Raedeke, among many others over Alan Quine then that's your opinion and that's fine, but we won't know for sure for a number of years so this argument is beyond ridiculous... A whole 2 years after he was drafted he's still concentrating more on the offensive side of the game then the defensive side? What 20 year old junior player does that?.. unheard of... How many junior forwards don't even know a defensive zone exists until they make it pro? How many kids playing junior would rather score a goal then back-check their ass off to break up a play? One of the easiest things to teach a kid with good work ethic is how to back-check and play a two-way game, and what better system to learn that in then in Detroit? I know I said I was done before but you suckered me in again... Now I'm done... lol
-
I'm pretty sure that is sarcasm.. Sure, those numbers don't look great but how about look at his most recent stats instead of looking at it over 4 years... His last 28 games after being traded to the Belleville Bulls he had 14 goals and 27 assists for 41 points... As someone else pointed out, he has been compared by many scouts as a Darren Helm type of player and Helmer had very similar numbers in his junior career, in fact his points per game were slightly lower than Quine's... 167 points in 201 WHL games (arguably the least competitive of the 3 CHL leagues). Can anyone say that they wouldn't want another Helmer on this team? People act like I'm expecting this kid to outscore Tavares next year or something. I was simply making the point that I wasn't a fan of letting him walk and I think it could be a mistake, a small one that won't have a huge impact, yes, but still a mistake...
-
What is the point in that list? Why would you list players that are no longer under contract with the Wings? Players that had absolutely no impact on signing Quine... especially considering the fact that I already listed a few players that I would let go in order to sign him... Parkes, Coetzee, Raedeke, just to name a few... Yes, I am... You are aware that that comment was aimed toward someone else, about how you need career AHLers. I was simply agreeing with him, saying that I was happy with those 4 signings. That has nothing to do with being unable to sign Quine... Anyway, like I said in my last post, this is getting out of hand, and it's being made into something it's not... I'm done with this...
-
I'm aware that they chose not to sign him, and that's all it is right now but IF he ends up having a better career than a handful of guys in our system then I would say that they "failed to sign him". If he chose not to sign then this point would be moot but the fact that they had every oportunity to get this guy under contract and IF he pans out it would be bad call on behalf of the scouts and Mr. Holland. I'm aware teams need career AHLers in their system, and that is exactly why I was happy with the resigning of guys like Hoggan, Evans, Grant and Paetsch a couple weeks ago. But a team also needs to look at the players with the best shot at making the bigs. Anyway, this topic has gone too far. I'm not saying that not signing Quine is going to stunt the Red Wings in any way, I'm just saying I think there were better options to drop rather than this kid.. Like I said, Only time will tell...
-
Since when is "I'm pretty confident" stating "knowing"?...... Funny how that is the only part of the quote that you left out.. lol Developed enough at 19/20 years old? Ok...... Anyway, there is no sence arguing about such an unknown, only time will tell. You can make an argument that you don't believe this kid will become anything but just don't claim to "know"...
-
Yes... That's exactly what I'm basing it on... Did you not read anything else in this post and just come to the conclusion that I am basing my opinion solely on this shootout goal? I could care less about the move he pulled off in the shootout. I have been saying ever since the team failed to sign him a couple months ago that I thought they would end up regreting it. The point is, there were so many other options they could have let go and given this kid a shot. How does one not see the upside and potential to a 20 year kid that has been improving every step of the way to a 22/23+ year old that has showed little to no upside... I would prefer to keep a kid out of junior that has the potential to become an NHLer rather than keep a career AHLer / ECHLer...
-
LOL... I love how you claim to "know" how this kid or any kid in our system is going to pan out... I'm not expecting him to be the next big thing coming out of the Ontario Hockey League, however I'm pretty confident that there are at least 5 other guys in our system that have a hell of a lot less potential than Quine. The kid is only 20 years old and scoring over a point per game in the OHL, has a ton of speed and is good in the faceoff circles. He will continue to work on his game and in my opinion will be a solid NHLer in a few years, much more than I can say for a handful of other guys we currently have under contract...

The 2013-14 schedule was supposed to be released yesterday according to multiple sources but because of the delay in negotiations with the 2014 Olympics they haven't released it yet. The Florida Panthers schedule has been leaked to the public ( http://fansided.com/2013/07/17/florida-panthers-2013-14-nhl-schedule-leaked/ ) but I haven't heard or seen anything on any other teams yet. If anyone has seen or gets there hands on any other teams schedules before they are actually released can you please post it here. I'm hoping all teams will officially release their schedules sooner than later...

Imagine if we could convert Mike McKee back to forward and one of McKee, Bertuzzi, or Callahan to center. That would truly revive the ol grindline... McKee (the brawn and bare knuckles, replacing Kocur / McCarty) - Callahan (the skilled two-way, converted to center, replacing Draper) - Bertuzzi (the in-your-face agitator, replacing Maltby). Work on their skill, without losing their grit and this could be a very good line that could shut down any line in the league.

Everyone always talks about the mistakes that Holland has made over the years, so if you were able to go back and completely change just one of his draft years which year would it be? I made changes to each draft over the past 15 years, but the last few years were difficult to assess due to most players not playing in the NHL yet. There are going to be some discrepancies between some of the players that I selected in replace of the players that were actually selected but just base your decision on the players listed... 1998 25 - Jiri Fischer - Scott Gomez 55 - Ryan Barnes - Brad Richards 56 - Tomek Valtonen - Erik Cole 84 - Jake McCracken - Shawn Horcoff 111 - Brent Hobday - Jaroslav Spacek 142 - Carl Steen - Mikael Samuelsson 151 - Adam DeLeeuw - Andrei Markov 171 - Pavel Datsyuk - Pavel Datsyuk 198 - Jeremy Goetzinger - Michael Ryder 226 - David Petrasek - Toby Petersen 256 - Petja Pietilainen - Petja Pietilainen 1999 120 - Jari Tolsa - Ryan Miller 149 - Andrei Maximenko - Michael Leighton 181 - Kent McDonell - Martin Erat 210 - Henrik Zetterberg - Henrik Zetterberg 238 - Anton Borodkin - Douglas Murray 266 - Ken Davis - Konstantin Gorovikov 2000 29 - Niklas Kronwall - Niklas Kronwall 38 - Tomas Kopecky - Jarret Stoll 102 - Stefan Liv - Lubomir Visnovsky 127 - Dmitri Semenov - Travis Moen 128 - Alexander Seluyanov - John-Michael Liles 130 - Aaron Van Leusen - Henrik Lundqvist 187 - Par Backer - Matthew Lombardi 196 - Paul Ballantyne - Paul Gaustad 228 - Jimmie Svensson - Lubmir Sekeras 251 - Todd Jackson - Darryl Bootland 260 - Evgeni Bumagin - Micki Dupont 2001 62 - Igor Grigorenko - Patrick Sharp 121 - Drew MacIntyre - Kevin Bieksa 129 - Miroslav Blatak - Jussi Jokinen 157 - Andreas Jamtin - Ryane Clowe 195 - Nick Pannoni - Johnny Oduya 258 - Dmitry Bykov - P.A. Before everyone jumps at me and says $#!% NO! Hear me out... Two years ago in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft we traded our first round pick (24th overall) to the Ottawa Senators for their two second round picks (35th and 48th overall). This move benefited us in a huge way. Ottawa landed Matt Puempel with their pick, while we landed two studs, arguably our top forward and defense prospects (not on the Red Wings roster this upcoming season); Tomas Jurco and Xavier Ouellet. One would have to think that it would be just as beneficial to do the same thing in this years draft. With this being such a deep draft, the difference between picking in the 15-20 range is virtually the same as picking in the 30-40 range, depending on what you're looking for. Anyone after the 10th pick is considered somewhat of a gamble, so why not grab another pick to increase your odds in picking up a future player. We need some big forwards to add to our deep prospect pool, and luckily for us, big bodied forwards are plentiful in this draft, so we could very easily pick up a couple. So how about if the Wings traded their 2013 first round pick (18th overall) to a team for two later picks in the late first round or early second round... Maybe one of these trades would work... Calgary - 22nd and 28th overall (very unlikely) Montreal - 2 of either 25th, 34th or 36th overall Columbus - 27th and 44th overall Dallas - 29th and 40th overall Personally, I would love it if we could get the 25th and 34th picks from Montreal for our 18th. Select whatever player is still available with the 25th pick, maybe someone like Gauthier will still be around and then grab McCarron with the 34th pick... Thoughts?...

Dreger: Filppula looking for $5.5m/season over at least 7 years
krsmith17 replied to a topic in General
Filppula is without a doubt, one of our best forwards. I agree with what Z and D for C and rick zombo said 100%. I don't think he is worth 5mil per year, but to say he isn't worth 4mil is completely under valuing him, which is what many people here seem to do with our players. Some people only look at the stats sheet, and to say he is invisible on the ice when he is not scoring is beyong ridiculous. He is one of the hardest working guys on the team, and he makes things happen, plain and simple. Like was said above, he can gain the zone on the power-play, he can set up plays, although everyone would love to see him score more or use his body more that isn't his game. I want to keep him, whether we do or not, who knows. -
Are you kidding? Three first round picks are a much better way to go when you're trying to rebuild, especially in such a deep, talented draft as this one. Just have a look at some of the players that "could" be available in Calgary's slots. With their 6th overall pick they could potentially get Darnell Nurse, Sean Monahan, Elias Lindholm or Valery Nichushkin. All extremely talented players that could possibly turn out to be better than Seth Jones. I know some people are going to think, "No way, Jones is a sure thing, a stud defenseman that is going to be a top defenseman in the league for a long time." And I think you'd be right but I also think Nurse is going to be a stud as well as the other three forwards mentioned. A team that is rebuilding should never make this trade but if a team that is rebuilding is offered this trade they should take it. To me, Calgary are stupid to have made the deal and Colorado are ever more stupid to have turned it down. With the opportunity to get three first rounders, they should have taken it for sure. Along with one of those players previously mentioned, there is a long list of other great players that they could grab with the 22nd and 28th picks. Some of the players are, Anthony Mantha, Adam Erne, Bo Horvat, Ryan Hartman, Kerby Rychel, Valentin Zykov, Nikita Zadorov, Alexander Wennberg, Curtis Lazar, Mirco Mueller, among many others. Obviously all of these players will not drop back to the 22nd and 28th picks but some of the will have to. There are going to be some great players and some are going to be real steals in the late first round for sure.

Signed Wings Sign Drew Miller to 3 year extension @ 1.35m/yr
krsmith17 replied to vladdy16's topic in General
Good signing. Cleary will come next... -
I wrote this in another forum... The Griffins have looked pretty solid all season and they really got a huge boost when the Wings were knocked out of the playoffs. Nyquist, Andersson and DeKeyser have really helped them a lot. Who knows, they may not have gotten past the Barons if the Wings scored that overtime goal in game 7 against the Hawks. But now they’re in great position to win their first ever Calder Cup, just two wins away. But what happens next year when Nyquist, Anderson, Tatar, DeKeyser and possibly Lashoff are all up with the Wings full time. Most would think that the Griffins would have to falter in a year when they lose so many of their best players. However, with these guys leaving there are many other guys coming in. Here’s what I would like to see for the 2013-14 Griffins… First of all, Mursak signed with Amur Khabarovsk in the KHL so he’s out and as far as I know, Backman is playing one more year with Linkoping in the SEL, and Athanasiou and Paterson are playing one more year in the OHL with their repective clubs. Players that should be traded away, let go or sent down to Toledo would be McCollum, Evans (I know he’s a captain but there just isn’t any room for him on the back end), Fournier, Nicastro, Skinner, Raedeke, Grant, Parkes, Coetzee and Nestrasil. So I would like to see something like this… Jurco – Jarnkrok – Frk Tvrdon – Sheahan – Pulkkinen Hoggan – Ferraro – Pare Callahan – Aubry – Glendening Ouellet – Sproul Almqvist – Marchenko Billins – Jensen Paetsch Mrazek Coreau That is a very solid team in my opinion. Here’s to a great 2012-13 season for the Griffins and looking forward to another great season in 2013-14 and bright future for the Wings.

INSANE grand rapids roster next season full of prospects
krsmith17 replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
LOL! Stalberg isn't a first line player but Abdelkader is? People have a pretty skewed opinion on who is and isn't a "first line player" or how to construct lines... It's not all about putting your top 3 players on the first line, 4th, 5th and 6th best players on the second line and so on... It's about what makes you a better team from top to bottom. The key with any successful team in today's NHL is the ability to roll 4 solid lines, there needs to be a balance. To me, these are 4 great lines that would be able to match up against any line in the league. Besides, Stalberg is bigger than Abby, probably a little faster than Abby, much better hands than Abby, much better point producer than Abby... Need I go on?... I think Pav would love to have a guy like Stalberg on his line, and either another big body (Franzen) or a right handed sniper (Brunner). Out of all the free agents that are available, that I think we have a decent shot at getting, that won't cost us a fortune, Stalberg is definitely at the top of my list. -

krsmith17 replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
Well if the option comes down to Lashoff and Colaiacovo, and Holland chooses to keep Carlo I would be extremely disappointed and I think it would be a huge mistake. Lashoff would be picked up by another team and I think he will be a solid shutdown guy for a long time in this league. We don't have many big body, shutdown guys in our system and we shouldn't let this one walk for nothing. I would be happy if the option were there for him to spend one more season in Grand Rapids but I'm not sure if he can, as far as I know he would have to pass through waivers. So Colaiacovo should definitely be traded away for something, anything, even if it's a late round draft pick. I would keep all of those forwards but I would buy out Samuelsson and possibly Bertuzzi, and trade another player, maybe Tootoo or Emmerton or Eaves. I'd probably keep Emmerton just because he is a center and we may need a center if Helm isn't ready to start the season. And I would also sign a free agent on top of that. Here is what I would like to see, although I know it probably won't happen... Stalberg - Datsyuk - Brunner Filppula - Zetterberg - Franzen Nyquist - Andersson - Tatar Abdelkader - Helm - Cleary Emmerton - Eaves Kronwall - Ericsson Smith - DeKeyser Quincey - Kindl Lashoff That is the roster and lines I would start the season with, although all players are all pretty interchangeable from line to line... -

That could be right, I'm not sure either but if that is the case, I would pick the 6 players that have the best shot at making an impact in the ECHL or AHL level. I honestly don't see any of the guys I listed ever making an impact in the NHL. I would probably keep Evans and Skinner for their leadership qualities and Nicastro and Nestrasil in hopes that they can turn some heads. Even if we bring back Filppula and one of either Cleary or Miller there would still be room for Nyquist, Andersson and Tatar. As for Lashoff, I'm pretty sure that he is out of minor league options next year. So if we don't have him up with the big club he has to pass through waivers, almost guaranteeing him being picked up by another team. I could be wrong on that but I'm pretty sure that is correct. -

Nyquist, Andersson and Tatar should / will be up full time with the Wings this season, as well as DeKeyser and Lashoff as the 7th defenseman. Mursak signed with Amur Khabarovsk in the KHL so he's out and as far as I know, Backman is playing one more year with Linkoping in the SEL, and Athanasiou and Paterson are playing one more year in the OHL with their repective clubs. I'm the same way, my girlfriend thinks I'm crazy but I don't miss a single Red Wings game, ever, thanks to PVR, barely miss any Griffins games and I even try to get in some junior games to keep tabs on all our promising prospects. I have been paying $10.99 per game all playoffs on AHL Live so I'm extremely stoked that the Finals are free. Definitely going to be a good series, I'm going to say Griffins in 7 with two overtime games...
-
Love it and completely agree with everything you said, except like Z Winged Dangler said we definitely need to hang on to Jurco. He is going to be an unbelievable player for the Wings in a few years from now. I've watched almost every Griffins playoff game in these playoffs and he has really stood out. Anyone see his game winner lastnight? He comes through center ice with a full head of steam and splits two defenders and snaps a shot short side for the win. Beautiful goal.

They have $6.6M to spend on 6 players, so yes I would consider them tight on money. Other teams that are tight against the cap that may have to use their amnesty buyouts include... Philadelphia - $3.3M over the cap / 2 players over the 23 man roster. Vancouver - $0.9M over the cap / 5 players under the 23 man roster. Chicago - $2.0M under the cap / 2 players under the 23 man roster. Tampa Bay - $3.3M under the cap / 6 players under the 23 man roster. Boston - $6.6M under the cap / 6 players under the 23 man roster. Carolina - $7.6M under the cap / 6 players under the 23 man roster. Pittsburgh - $7.8M under the cap / 5 players under the 23 man roster. San Jose - $8.6M under the cap / 8 players under the 23 man roster. Minnesota - $9.1M under the cap / 6 players under the 23 man roster. Los Angeles - $10.9M under the cap / 8 players under the 23 man roster. The Flyers, Canucks and Lightning are the only 3 teams that I would consider definites to use their amnesty buyout as they don't have any other choice. There are also another half dozen teams very likely to use theirs aswell, most likely the Bruins, Hurricanes, Sharks and Kings.

There is no question he will be back. My guess is he will be resigned to a 2-3 year $2.5-3 mil contract. Everyone is aware of this guys natural ability to bury his chances and he has a great one-timer so my only hope is that he is used better on the power-play. I have become utterly frustrated with seeing him on the right point on the man advantage. The guy needs to use his accurate bomb on the left side of the ice. He should be hovering around the left faceoff circle waiting for someone to put it in his wheel-house to unload a canon. I bet he would score 30+ goals next year if he was used properly on the power-play... Thoughts?...
