    2019-20 Prospects Thread

I didn't really like the trade at the time, but I highly doubt Kaski ever becomes a regular NHLer, let alone an impact player at the NHL level. It's not really any worse than the Saarijarvi for Comrie trade in my opinion. Neither were good trades by any stretch, but neither will likely have much of an impact, positive or negative, long-term.

    2020 Draft Thread

It's a move I'd consider making in a year where there's not a Lafreniere calibre player at the top. I mean, sure, I'd consider it if it's a massive overpayment. If Ottawa ends up with the 2nd and 7th overall picks, and they offer those two picks, along with a top prospect like Batherson... Otherwise, I'm drafting Lafreniere.
  4. Yeah, what we got on Friday was insane. Record snow fall here. And yeah, we're expecting around that tonight.
  5. Yeah, all done. 90+cm down and supposed to get more tonight... What about you? How much did you guys get?
  6. Ol' busty and sucky are the only two players worth watching these days... Fabbri looks like he's been gripping the stick too tight the past few games, making a lot of bad passes, and Bertuzzi hasn't been the same the past few games either. Probably from taking shots (friendly fire) from his teammates every game...

    Yzerman Interview with Ken Kal

To be clear, I'd be all for drafting Askarov outside the top 10-15 if we get another 1st round pick. I just wouldn't have any interest in drafting him with a top 4 pick. I think Askarov will end up going around where Spencer Knight went last year, and if we can land another 1st round pick that ends up in that range, I'd be thrilled with Askarov. I agree. I don't want any part of Holtby, but it's not even just about his numbers now, and as you pointed out, they're not great. He's 30 years old. He'd likely be 32+ before we ever make the playoffs, and 35+ before we're legit contenders... No thanks! I'll take any of the 2nd tier goaltenders. For the same reason, I don't have much interest in Krug either. Sure, if he's willing to sign a super team friendly deal. But he won't, and all indications point to him wanting to stay in Boston.
  8. A week ago, he had zero value. If he can keep this up, we might be able to get a mid round pick from a desperate team. If we can get a 3rd round pick, I'd be happy.

I assume you mean if he clears waivers. Yes, I agree. These are the types of trades I hope Yzerman is looking to make at the deadline.

They'll get a nice return for him at the deadline...

The only thing wrong with all of this is that I've full admitted that Comrie may be nothing more than a career AHLer. I've even said that regardless how his career plays out, I think it was a bad move to not bring Comrie back into the organization for the purpose of him playing in Grand Rapids.

Scouts are wrong all the time about top 5 picks and later, but how often are they wrong about the top pick in the draft? I know, Yakupov... But that kid wasn't considered close to an elite talent. Lafreniere isn't on the level of McDavid, but he is on the level of Matthews. How many scouts were wrong about that pick?

    2020 Draft Thread

I'm not saying to trust the scouts or not trust the scouts though. kip was just acting as if they don't consider the fact that there have been so many bust top 5 picks though. Scouts do make mistakes ALL THE TIME, but based on what I've seen, and virtually every scout in the hockey world, Lafreniere is a can't miss, elite, borderline generational talent.

    2020 Draft Thread

Rossi and Lafreniere have the same usage, despite playing in different leagues, and different positions, but Rust and Kucherov have different usage, despite playing in the same league, and same position? I'm going to assume this is all speculation on your behalf, since you've probably never seen either Rossi or Lafreniere play much, if at all, live in the CHL, and Rusk and Kucherov (as well as Matthews) have very similar usage based on these models... https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/frozenpool_playerusage.php?team=PIT https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/frozenpool_playerusage.php?team=T.B Well it's a good thing one of us understands how math works... The point doesn't remain, because your point is wrong. Lafreniere has been and will be a much better offensive player than Rossi, as well as every other area of the game. Any argument against this is laughable...

    2020 Draft Thread

You can't be serious... Just because he's having a slightly better offensive year than Lafreniere you believe he's a more offensively talented player? You're smarter than that... do you think Bryan Rust is a more offensively talented player than Auston Matthews and Nikita Kucherov? Just because he has more points per game this season? The difference is 0.3, not 0.03... which is 30/100 or 3/10... Sure it would, but in my opinion, Lafreniere is in a league of his own. Rossi and Raymond are comparable, but the leagues they play in are not, so that has to be taken into consideration. Pro scouts probably aren't aware of these statistics. Maybe you should let them know... Also, Lafreniere is a borderline generational talent. He's not your typical number one overall. I know you're not buying into this though, so whatever.

Trade deadline bait available this year?

For sure. I get that, but I'd personally prefer to keep the better player (Fabbri) and the 40th overall pick in that situation.

    2020 Draft Thread

First of all, Rossi is not already a more talented offensive player than Lafreniere... He has more points so far this season. That does not mean he's more offensively talented. Lafreniere is far and away the most offensively talented player in this draft. He's also much better at just about every facet of the game than any other player in this draft. They're also not in the same league. Yes, they're both in the CHL, but Lafreniere is in the QMJHL and Rossi is in the OHL. The OHL is a slightly higher scoring league (3.8 vs 3.5 goal per game) which would factor into Rossi's slightly higher scoring rate (2.31 vs 2.15 goals per game). You should also factor in the previous year, and how consistently dominant Lafreniere has been throughout his junior career. Last season Rossi was at 1.23, while Lafreniere was at 1.72 goals per game. The SHL is much more difficult league than the OHL. Even with the point conversion, Rossi blows Raymond's numbers out of the water. However, would Rossi still be the dominant player he is in the OHL, if he were playing against men in the SHL? Or if / when he actually gets to the AHL / NHL? I'm not so sure. So what you're suggesting is that you probably know better than thousands of pro scouts? Yes, Lafreniere will go first overall, because he absolutely should go first overall, because he absolutely will be the best player to come out of this draft. This simply isn't true. This, I agree with.

Trade deadline bait available this year?

For sure, but I think Athanasiou's ask might be higher, despite his down season.

    2020 Draft Thread

I'm not convinced Rossi plays center at the NHL level. Maybe, but being that undersized I wouldn't bet on it. I know there are examples of elite undersized centers in the league (Point), but I'd say more convert to wing than stay center. Also, it's hard to say for certain that Rossi is / will be a more talented offensive player than Raymond based on play from two different leagues. I asked the question because not too long ago, you didn't think it was certain that Lafreniere would go number one.
  23. krsmith17

Trade deadline bait available this year?

It would depend on how low Athanasiou's value is. If we could get a 1st for Fabbri, and only a 2nd for Athanasiou, I'd rather take the 2nd for Athanasiou and keep Fabbri.

    2020 Draft Thread

What if we draft 1? Obviously a winger (Lafreniere) there... What if we end up dropping to 4, and the top 3 go, Lafreniere, Byfield, Stutzel? I could see Yzerman drafting a winger (Raymond) there as well...

    Yzerman Interview with Ken Kal

In 56 drafts the Detroit Red Wings have only once had Steve Yzerman running the draft. Steve Yzerman drafted Andrei Vasilevskiy. I'm not suggesting late rounds, I'm saying not with what will be our highest pick in 30 years, with some elite (can't miss) forwards on the board. If we end up falling to 3 or 4, your boy Stutzel will likely still be available, and I'd much rather pick him, or a number of other forwards before Askarov. If we can somehow grab another 1st round pick, and Askarov is still on the board, I'd be more than happy to pick him there. Not with a top 4 pick though.
