I think he *could* sign here. Same goes for virtually any UFA on the market any season. But AGAIN, that's beside the point. He still should be a target. You don't not call a free agent because he might not sign... I get the feeling you've been rejected a lot of the years... Not that I didn't think that before...
-
Again, saying we should target Suter (or any player) has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you think he will sign here. But I think you know that...
-
No dummy. "Wanting" a player, or thinking a player would be a "good fit" has nothing to do with whether or not said player actually wants to sign. You said yourself, the others are unlikely to sign in Detroit either, but yet you'd still want to pursue them? Not a "Suter slappy" at all. He just happens to be the best left-handed defenseman option available in free agency, which also happens to be a position which the Red Wings currently need to fill...
-
You're MASSIVELY overvaluing Bertuzzi. He doesn't get you Nylander straight up, let alone Leafs adding a 1st (or Dermott and Liljegren). It's not going to happen. Also, Cholowski > Dermott
-
Whether or not Suter wants to come to Detroit is irrelevant. It's a matter of whether or not Yzerman wants to pursue Suter. We can flip Oesterle or McCabe for a 4th or 5th round pick in a few years? Sweet!
-
Younger > Better. Got it. More GM's should think like you. Nah. I'm done trying. You're a lost cause.
-
I'm just really confused as to why you'd prefer to sign s***tier players... You're the one that started the argument about my preference for better players...
-
"No, I totally get it. You prefer s***tier players because they're younger"... Context being the Detroit Red Wings, a rebuilding team. We can definitely sign more mediocre younger players. No one's saying we can't. Suter isn't Filppula. Not even close.
-
Yes, Suter is better than Oleksiak, despite being 8 years older. Are you arguing that? No, Oleksiak isn't prime Suter. Nor is he current Suter. I'm sure you would have said the same about Ryan last offseason. You don't know what Suter wants. If the rumors are true, stay away. That's for Yzerman to determine. Nowhere did I say ALL free agents are stop gaps. But for a rebuilding team, that's what makes sense. But by all means, keep ignoring everything Yzerman has said regarding free agency / trade targets... I'm sure at least a couple of them will be better than those guys in a few years. If you have confidence in any of your prospects, you probably shouldn't lock up mediocre players long term. Otherwise you have another Dekeyser situation.
-
No, I totally get it. You prefer s***tier players because they're younger. Strawman. I've never said all free agents are stop gaps. Most rebuilding teams signing free agents, are just that though. Yzerman has said he's not looking to sign players older than the current core, long term. Sure. So what about Cholowski, McIsaac, Sebrango, Johansson, Wallinder, Viro, etc... Maybe we take another LHD in the 1st round this year. For me (and Yzerman), I'd prefer stop gaps until some of those guys are ready. DeKeyser will be done after this season. Sutter (hypothetically) in two seasons...
-
It makes no difference how you break it down, who vs. who... You wanted to sign Gelinas, but not Suter. It doesn't make sense. One is a 7th defenseman, the other is a top 3 defenseman. Again, we don't need a Biega replacement. We need a Nemeth / Merrill replacement, ideally an upgrade. Suter would be that. What does Gourde or Johnson have to do with anything? I'm sure Yzerman would have liked to warn Yzerman about the Johnson contract... Yzerman has stated several times that he has no interest in adding players older than the current core to long-term contracts. He's going to continue doing what he did last offseason, and add a couple more short-term, low cap vets in free agency, and acquire younger talent (or draft picks) in trades. Compete for what? A playoff spot? 2-3 seasons. A Stanley Cup? 4-5 seasons, if everything goes right... Yeah, my comprehension isn't very good...
-
I did read. You were advocating Gelinas to play with Seider. Some mentioned Suter as a player to target to play with Seider. You think that is dumb, because he's old. I say it's smart because he's a better player, despite being "old"... Fact is, not a single one of those players are young enough to "potentially grow with this team into the future"... They're all older than Mantha (traded), and Bertuzzi (possibly going to be traded). If you want to add young players to build around our current and still growing core, that needs to be done via trade, not free agency. Free agency is meant for stop-gaps, and that's exactly what a Suter or Martinez would be, much like Staal (trade) and Ryan (signing) last year.
-
You're the one not making much sense here... You're advocating to add a Biega type replacement (Gelinas) to pair with Seider, but think it would be dumb to add Suter to pair with Seider. You've already admitted Suter (very obviously) being the better player. Why wouldn't you want a better player to pair with your up and coming stud defenseman? Seider could learn a ton from a player like Suter. We don't need a Biega replacement. Up your standards. Biega sucks. We currently have Cholowski and DeKeyser on the left side, and Seider, Hronek, Stecher and Lindstrom on the right side. We need another left-handed defenseman, and I think Suter would be a great fit, until one (two) of the aforementioned players is ready to take Suter's (and Dekeyser's) spot in the lineup. Sure, but you're thinking worst case scenario with Suter. I think he will be a solid top four defenseman (at worst) for the next two seasons. And for that reason, I think he would hold more value as a trade chip at the '23 deadline. Oleksiak is a solid defenseman, and I've actually mentioned his name as a possible target in the past. I wouldn't be upset if he was our target, I'd just personally prefer Suter.
-
Hockey? Sure. NHL hockey? Not a chance. Suter probably only has another couple years of top four left in him. Which is why anyone that would want to sign him, would only want to sign him for 1-2 years... There absolutely is a reason, and that reason is, the Detroit Red Wings still need to ice an NHL caliber hockey team. Yzerman won't be taking any shortcuts, but he will want to be competitive through the rest of this rebuild. There are no prospects banging down the door, but in 2-3 years, there should be a number of guys on the cusp of making the jump. McIsaac, Sebrango, Johansson, Wallinder, Viro, etc will all be knocking by the time Suter is ready to retire... Regardless which player is better / would be the better fit (it's Suter), the timeline (2 years) fits better than any of the younger options (4+ years).
-
Retarded dink... You're the new Brendan Smith... Yeah, Martinez and Suter are the two I would target in free agency. As long as they're reasonable cap hit (to possibly flip at the deadline), and low term (1-2 years). Either would be a great compliment to Seider.

Coming from the guy that wanted to sign Eric f***ing Gelinas... LOL 36-38 year old Ryan Suter >>>>> 30-32 year old Eric Gelinas
-
I disagree. It depends how much you think Keith has left in the tank. If you think he's done, and he'll only put up 10-15 points, playing 40 games each of the next two seasons, maybe I'd agree. But I think he'll be a solid, top four, that can put up 25-30 points the next two seasons. To me, that's worth more than a 6th round pick, regardless of age. Again, just overpaid. No, it doesn't really clear anything up actually... Yes, generally young players are good, and old players are bad. What's your point? It's obviously not always the case, which is why Suter good, McCabe bad, despite being nearly 10 years older...
-
Absolutely. Like I said, I don't think this trade is nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. Holland lost two insignificant pieces, BUT he should have got him at 50% retained salary. Ummm yeah. Stecher was a good signing. Filppula was a bad signing... Are you debating this?
-
I don't think that's far out of reach for Keith at all though. He was on pace for 23 points this past season, and 36 the season before, on a very bad Hawks team. I'm betting on a bounce back for him next season. 30+ points. There's something to be said about what he could teach some of the young guys as well. I would think a kid like Bouchard could learn a lot from a vet like Keith. We don't really have many defensive prospects banging down the door. Yzerman will sign a veteran free agent, and for me, I'd much rather sign Ryan Sutter short-term, than any of the guys you mentioned, depending on term of course.
-
I'd be more than comfortable with $3M for 2 years of Suter. He was (is) still a good defenseman, just overpaid.
-
Am I the only one that doesn't think the Keith trade was THAT bad? Caleb Jones is basically Xavier Ouellet. He's not good. The 3rd round pick isn't likely to amount to anything. Keith was awful in a top pair role in Chicago the past couple seasons, but with a change of scenery on a better team, in a lesser role, he could be a decent middle pair defenseman. The only real issue I see with the trade, is no salary retention. Holland should have been able to get Bowman to eat some of that contract...
-
All joking aside, I'd love to see Suter paired with Seider for a couple seasons...
-
Bullet dodged...
-
I think the value is about right (maybe add a mid round pick). I'm not sure if Vancouver would be that desperate to shed one year of Eriksson, but they are tight against the cap. $15M to sign 8 players, two of which, Pettersson and Hughes should get pretty hefty raises... I'd rather this trade as well. However, I'm not sure if a 2nd gets it done. They may have some interest in hometown kid, Cholowski as well. It does seem like Vancouver are a good trade partner. Yzerman vs Benning, I like our chances...

IF this were to happen, I'd expect a player (Eklund) at 6, and maybe Wallstedt at 9... That would be one hell of a haul in my opinion...
