Perlini was put on the 3rd line with s***ty 4th line calibre players the moment he came to Detroit, and has since been demoted to the 4th line with AHL calibre players... The best player Perlini has played with at 5on5 this season is Taro Hirose. He's currently in the AHL. Other than that, he's played every game with some combination of Nielsen (1 point in 27 games), Erne (0 points in 23 games), Ehn (0 points in 22 games), Abdelkader (3 points in 16 games)... That's horse s***. I'm not saying Perlini needs to play with elite players to produce. Just competent players. As bad as this team is, we do have some competent players outside of Larkin, Mantha, and Bertuzzi... Put him on a line with Filppula and Fabbri / Athanasiou for a few games to see what he can do. It worked for Fabbri, why is it so hard to believe it could work for Perlini? If it doesn't work out, what have we lost? Nothing. I don't buy this. I'll bet the majority of middle six NHLers would do jack s*** with the ass players Perlini has been saddled with this season. It's very rare for players to be able to succeed despite their linemates. Most need at least some sort of help offensively. Perlini hasn't gotten any...

I don't "hate" on him. I just don't think he should be on this team, let alone any other competent NHL team. The Ehn level depth should be in Grand Rapids... Well, no s***...

Says you. Glendening would be a 4th liner on at least 2/3rds of the other team's in the league, and he will eventually be again here. Athanasiou likely isn't a center here long term, but the state of this team right now, he certainly could be, and a better one than our current bottom six centers (Nielsen and Ehn)... I've advocated trading him for the past two years, so I'm not one of the Wings fans that overvalues him, but you undervalue him all the time. He probably "could" be a serviceable bottom six winger. But like I mentioned above, why do it when he's a top six (or at worst top nine) skilled player on this team? And there are other bottom six players that are better suited for a bottom six role?... Galchenyuk is lazy and he sucks. Also, he too would (should) be a middle six winger on this (historically bad) team...

Of course they would. They're our two best wingers. No one is suggesting Perlini is a top line winger or a line driver. He's a middle six winger that needs to play with skilled players to get the most out of him. He'll never drive a line, but he could be a very solid complement to a line. Fabbri was playing sheltered 4th line minutes in St. Louis this season. He had 1 goal, 0 assists in 9 games. He was then traded (given) to Detroit and awarded top six minutes and all of a sudden he puts up 6 goals, 6 assists in 14 games. I believe Perlini is being underutilized in Detroit, the same way Fabbri was in St. Louis. He didn't just forget how to score. He's just never played with two players as bad as Ehn and Erne in his young NHL career...

I'm not saying Perlini couldn't adapt to such a role, but why ask a skilled player to do that on a historically bad team? Cleary came to a stacked Red Wings team in 2005. Perlini came to a league worst Red Wings team in 2019. Completely different situations. One was forced to play behind Hall of Famers. The other is forced to play behind borderline NHLers, because the coach is a knob...

Zetterberg and Datsyuk had 66 and 65 points respectively that season. Larkin and Mantha could easily reach those totals this season... on a MUCH worse team...

That's the difference though. A player like Glendening can produce (minimal offense) wherever he is in the lineup. It's just the style of game he plays. A player like Perlini needs to play with skilled players. He's a lost cause in a checking role. Switching Glendening and Perlini would benefit both players and the team. You said "probably in place of one of the "i" brothers you spotted on the wing"... To me, that would be Bertuzz"i", Fabbr"i", and Perlin"i". Why would anyone think you were talking about H"i"rose? What about Zad"i"na? Athanas"i"ou? Are they "i" brothers too? I wouldn't be surprised if neither are on this team next year either, but I do think Perlini deserves a look with like-skilled players. I also think if given the opportunity, he would impress enough to earn a contract beyond this season. He probably won't get it though, so whatever... What exactly is it that I'm "wrong" about? Glendening is a 4th line player, playing above his skill set. That, I'm right about. Perlini has some untapped potential, and could be a solid middle six winger. That's more of an opinion, but one I'll stand by until proven otherwise.

Based solely on points? Sure. He's also been put in a situation to succeed, playing with players that can gift him points. Remember that time Abdelkader scored 23 goals, 44 points, off the backs of Datsyuk and Zetterberg? Switch Perlini and Glendening for a dozen games, and I guarantee Perlini surpasses Glenny in points. It sure does. It's literally what every team tries to do... It was a compliment. You think because I have Glendening on the 4th line, I don't like him? I love Glenny. He's a great 4th line grinder... What two "losers"? Fabbri has 6 goals in 14 games... Perlini has 0 goals in 17 games, playing with two boat anchors. Yes literal anchors... How am I cherry picking a sample size? You said Athanasiou shouldn't play center. I point to the one stretch when he actually played center, and played quite well... We get it. You hate Athanasiou... It's 10 degrees here today too. What's your point?

I agree. I could be wrong, but I took it as him saying that Glendening would be *better* than a 4th liner on all but (maybe) 10 teams in the league... That, I disagree with...

    Jeff Blashill History

An elite checking line? I wouldn't even say Glendening is an "elite" checking line center (very good, yes, but not elite), let alone the two wingers... Teams can afford to have a $1.8M 4th line center. Build a core and fill the rest with cheap ELC's. He wouldn't and shouldn't be playing against other team's top line every single shift... Throw that line out there after a power-play, when our top guys are tired, and the opposing team's top guys are hungry. Right now, you're probably right. With everyone healthy, I disagree. Who is that? Bertuzzi, Fabbri or Perlini? You really think Glendening is better suited in a scoring role than any of those three? Yeah, because Athanasiou was so terrible at center last season wasn't he? I'd love to see what your ideal lineup looks like... I wouldn't say anyone on this team is being "mistreated", but there are definitely players being underutilized. I wouldn't lump Athanasiou in that category, but Perlini on the other hand...
  13. Comrie getting the start tonight.

What? Glendening is a defensive stalwart with very little offensive awareness. He can win faceoffs, kill penalties and grind against other teams' top lines. Glendening is a prototypical 4th liner. Where do you think he should ideally be on this team / average team / top team?

    Jeff Blashill History

We're bad. Really bad. However, I disagree that Helm and Glendening should be in the top six. Id put all of Larkin, Mantha, Bertuzzi, Fabbri, Athanasiou, Perlini, Zadina and Filppula ahead of them on the depth chart. I'd also put Hirose ahead of them despite being demoted to the AHL... With everyone healthy, my ideal lineup would look something like this... Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha Fabbri - Filppula - Zadina Hirose - Athanasiou - Perlini Helm - Glendening - Abdelkader / Erne

I don't see Blashill going anywhere this season. It also wouldn't shock me to see him get that extra year next season. I'm starting to lean in the direction of letting him go after this season though. I don't know much about Larionov as a coach, but I'd be open to the idea of him coming back in an assistant coaching role (at least to start). He's one of the smartest players I've seen play the game.

I'd trade Ehn for literally any 19-24 year old player in the league (including prospects). I doubt Kirk will amount to anything at the NHL level, but sure, why not...

Meh. The only players that aren't guaranteed are Kivenmaki and Eliasson. The players that matter will be there, playing prominent roles for their respective countries. Veleno will likely be the number one center for Canada. McIsaac will likely be a top pair defenseman for Canada. Mastrosimone will likely be a middle six winger for USA. Berggren will likely be a top six winger for Sweden. Seider will be the number one defenseman for Germany. Kivenmaki might be a bottom six winger for Finland. Eliasson might be the backup goalie for Sweden. Neither of the latter two have much of an NHL future anyway, so I won't be too upset if they don't make it. I'm expecting big things from at least 3 or 4 of those players though. Veleno, McIsaac and Seider will all likely be wearing a letter for their respective teams as well.

"BizNasty" is a f***ing goof... I don't know about you, but I'd like to believe that Yzerman has a better eye for talent than that jacka**... Afterall, Yzerman did give up a decent piece to acquire Perlini. I think it's way too early to know how this trade will play out. I just want to see Perlini given an opportunity to do something. If he fails, so be it, but at least give him the chance to prove you wrong...

    Howard = Average

I was with you until you said to buyout Bernier and re-sign Howard... Neither have been very good, but Bernier has been better. Bernier is also 4 years younger with 1 year left on his deal. Regardless how this season plays out, it would be dumb to buyout Bernier. Keep him for one more season, let Howard walk, see how Comrie looks at the end of the season, and either go with Bernier / Comrie, or UFA / Bernier. I'm hopeful that Comrie can develop into the goaltender he was once projected to be, just a few short years ago.

    2019-20 Prospects Thread

Perlini is a prime example of a player being underutilized. There's no reason Perlini can't be a solid middle six winger for this team for the foreseeable future. Instead, Blashill is setting him up to fail, playing him on the 4th line with two anchors every game. Everyone is super high on Fabbri (rightfully so), but I guarantee if we put Fabbri on a line with Ehn and Erne and he might have a couple points if he were lucky, and Perlini on a line with Filppula and Athanasiou or Larkin and Bertuzzi and he would have at least a handful of points. It just pisses me off that both are coming from similar situations (cast offs from other teams), but one was set up to succeed from the beginning, while the other was set up to fail. Perlini has a higher draft pedigree (drafted 12th overall vs 21st the same year). Yzerman gave up more to acquire Perlini (defensive prospect with NHL potential vs a career 4th liner with no offensive upside). I don't understand it. Why is Perlini being wasted on the 4th line?... Why isn't he given an opportunity with similar skilled players?... Jeff F***ing Blashill. That's why...
