I saw Smith at the Wings prospect camp this summer, he looked great. He stood out the most out of anyone, IMO.

Hossa rejected a nine year, $81 million deal with Edmonton to sign a one year deal with Detroit. He couldn't be extended because Lidstrom was locked in at $7.45 million for this year. Had Lidstrom been a UFA too and come down a bit in price (about $1.5 million), Hossa would probably still be here.

There are ways the Wings can re-sign him. It all depends on how much Lidstrom's willing to take. If he accepts around $5 million and Kovalchuk around $7.5-8 it's doable.

I'd gladly move Filppula for Kovalchuk. I think a lot of people are forgetting Kovalchuk is only a year older than Val. Having an elite scorer like Kovalchuk lets you split up Datsyuk and Zetterberg making Filppula unnecessary -- more of a luxury than a necessity. Kovalchuk-Datsyuk-Holmstrom Franzen-Zetterberg-Cleary Highly doubt it's going to happen, I don't even want to get excited about it.

Agreed. All the one and done talk is wishful thinking from the fans of the 29 other teams. Chicago's going to be good for a long time.

$3 million for a very defensively sound center who has 60-70 point potential isn't a bad contract. End of story.

Okay, so they were paid based on the past and Val is being paid based on the future. Right now, there's nothing wrong with Filppula making $3 million.

Michael Handzus, Rod Brind'Amour, Jarret Stoll, Tuomo Ruutu, Tyler Bozak, Mike Fisher, Andy McDonald, Patrice Bergeron, Michael Nylander, Shawn Horcoff, Jochen Hecht, Mike Modano, Dave Bolland, and Chris Drury all make more than Filppula. Mostly all comparable players (at this point in their careers) and all make more than Filppula. $3 million for Filppula is fine.

I've been saying it all year long. Once they get healthy and have some time to play together they'll be fine. Getting healthy is step one, not the cure-all. On paper the team will look much better but they'll need some time to start playing their style of hockey again and get their legs under them.

Once Franzen and Holmstrom come back, they have about a month to get in a groove before the playoffs.

Actually the defense is better this year. They're allowing 2.69 goals per game as opposed to 2.97 last year. Just shows you how good last year's offense was. I still think they'll be able to get rolling once they get healthy. Pittsburgh was something like 5 points out of a playoff spot at this time last year.

I can see Chicago dealing for him. They need to get rid of some pieces to cut down on salary next year anyway. Don't forget Atlanta was very high on Campbell the year he signed with Chicago. Campbell, Versteeg, and picks for Kovalchuk? Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. They'd look unstoppable heading into the playoffs but you never know.

He's not expecting him to play great. He's expecting him to play well enough to win. He hasn't. Edit: Why keep starting him? He hasn't earned his starts.

Osgood's been "out of rhythm" for two seasons now. It's not Babcock.

Eva... in Osgood's last 66 games he has posted an .891 save percentage and 2.96 GAA. Why in the world, when the Wings need points more than they have in the past 15 years, would Babcock start Osgood routinely? There's no time now for him to "find his groove" over multiple starts. He's got to put up or shut up and he hasn't done that consistently in a (regular) season and a half.
