    Are the Wings a Contender?

Not true I've always said they are a playoff contender but added that I wouldn't be surprised if the streak ends. There is a lot of hockey left

    Are the Wings a Contender?

Playoff Contender ? Yes but cup contender? No way in hell they are at least half a decade away from being at that stage again

Nope never but he is not wrong here. If a specific or specific stats can push your own team over the top for sure you are using them, but so far nobody has been able to produce such stats and I guess that's part of why some teams are hiring math geniuses.

Actually I complemented them excel freaks and math geniuses is a positive. Baseball is a different much slower game and personally I highly believe GMs are having access to a lot of information. I. Think Burke said it best :,, show me a stat that gives us an advantage and we are going to pay you a lot of money.. " but so far nobody has done that

Yes, they are and that's why watching the players is more important. I mean, things like intangibles, work ethic and grit can't be measured. Best example is Toews, doesn't score things of goals but he is easily a top 3 player behind Crosby and Stamkos << but to know that people have to watch the game instead of paying around with Excel sheets, calculators I mean, GMs are already having enough information those new stats are just something to talk about fire the media.

They are based on past examples, given some funny names and done by math freaks and excel geniuses but I guess I'm just not advanced enough to care about stats other than goals, assists, gave is... the official ones. And even then they aren't telling the whole story a player could have a great game but still be snake bitten

Hockey is played on ice not in a basement with an excel computer or by math freaks

Chelios Is Not Too Fond of Shanahan

I think what Chelios said is perfectly fine, Shanhan has no experience at the job, he never coached or has been involved in a GM role and now he is taking on a huge job in THE hockey-market worldwide. Becoming a GM/president is hard becoming a good one is even harder and personally I appreciate guys who are working their way up more than someone who gets the job on a silver table. My favorite Chelios quote of all time

Wow just wow after Rene Rancord, O Donnel is the second best anthem singer

    Saluting the fans

Gregory Campbell, Patrice Bergeron are perfect examples on how to salute the fans: one broke his foot and still finished the shift, the other played through a ton of injuries just to help out his team. Gestures like that at least to me would mean much more than a stupid stick-saluting

    Doggone it Danny Cleary

I think he could be a good coach one day

    Saluting the fans

Wearing the flag on a suit, jacket, sark is not the same as the stupid saluting the fans because it actually has a meaning: it means having national pride, loving the fatherland and showing respect to those that risk their lifes by trying to protect each and every day. That's why I'm having one of all of my suits, car and of course backpack

Weiss has a place in the lineup now it's his chance to perform. Simple as that

    Saluting the fans

Shanahan has no experience at being a VP or defacto GM at all, the guy is still learning and so is Kyle Dubas, the only one with experience is Dave Nonis there but after a while I think this trio could work very well. Shanahan has the player experience, Nonis knows the in and outs of the business side and Dubas has some new ideas.

    Doggone it Danny Cleary

Just a great thing, kid will remember this day for the rest of his hopefully long and healthy life. Way to go Danny

    Saluting the fans

Not all of their fans are that stupid, loud and annyoing just the attention hungry ones. This whole thing is a gesture and nothing else I still can't believe how bothered the Torontomedia is by that. If I'm Phil Kessel I'll come out and tell them:,, you still don't understand that I'm shy so be it, from now on I won't reply to questions from Simmons, Feschuk or other Toronto Star? writers..and sorry to Mr. Siegel was a bad time to ask me I'll still reply to you.." The way some of the players are getting scrutinized there is beyond ridiuclous it's like 24/7 all the time, also if a 30 + goalscorer (best player on the team) gets boo'ed or finds himself in every trade-proposal on their board I'm not surprised that the team decided enough is enough. Personally I couldn't care less if the players are saluting the fans after a meaningless game, if its the first/last game of the season I can understand it but man they are making an elephant out of a fly there. Also I'm absolutely stunned how Carlyle can defend this crap from the media how about standing up for your players, they are the ones who will decide about your jobfuture..not the obnoxious reporters. Toronto really is something else in terms of pressure and media-hell wow.

    Inconsistency

Rebuilding/retooling team that isn't as skilled as it used to be, so inconsistency has to be expected. The team lacks gritty guys that can provide energy and change the momentum with a huge hit or blocking a laserbeam of a shot.

Nestrasil Waived / Claimed by Hurricanes

Well not that Nestrasil is anything special but not even getting a 7 plus rounder for him is a bit disappointing.

    In an odd way.....

A lot can happen in that timeperiod but: - the remaining stars will be long gone by then << replacing them is *not* going to be an easy task - other current contenders will be on the decline (Boston if they don't replace Chara, Pittsburgh Crosby will be 34 by then, Blues Backes would turn 37...) but other would be at the prime of their run (Tampa !, Sabers) So for now I'll gladly enjoy watching the young guns play and not expect anything, till this team is loaded in real redwingsstyle again

    General discussion for tonight's games

He is pissed about that hammer from Prout but he had to see it coming both dropped their gloves and were willing to go! But man this Bruins version isn't as entertaining as last years one. Thornton and Iginla are really missed. I mean, it's going to be one heck of a Saturday night, hnic and two original 6 clubs matches plus the chance of seeing Robbins back in the Bruins line up and Lucic finally going berserk I hope the Bruins don't re-sign him Lucic would look fantastic in a Winged wheel Here use another fight between fight two http://m.youtube.com/results?q=Lucic prout&sm=3

    Alfie not playing this season

Great player, should make it to the HHOF - although he might have to wait a bit - thanks for trying it Alfie, now go and enjoy your retirement with the Senators :-) Such a classy player, will for sure watch his retirement ceremony in Ottawa. I'm also glad, that he doesn't push it the guy has made his money and had one heck of a career. But I still think he should have finished his last year in Ottawa in hindsight I highly doubt he would have left them again

CBJ's Jack Johnson files for bankruptcy

Agreed yeah it was a mistake but nobody in his right mind would believe that your own family is taking 15 million $ and turn it into nothing. Sad story indeed at least now he fill find out who his real friends are nice to see that the Jackets are standing behind him also.
