Good god the Ducks had TWO hall of fame defenseman and a goalie playing out of his mind PLUS two coming all-stars, yeah hard to win a cup with such a roster. Carlyle hasn't had any success since then. Babcock is the best coach in the league and him getting this roster into the post season has been an unbelievable job, no other coach would have accomplished that.

Playoff hockey is physical and hardnosed the refs are trying harder not to interfere with the game simple as that.

I really like your thought process but I have to add something: After seeing Vanek and his first round performance I'd rather sign Niskanen + Moulson/Statsny and have a bit more capspace to get the Dekeyser signing done. Buying out Tootoo would be a waste of a buyout opportunity Weiss and Franzen are making much more and are signed longer, so that would make more sense. The lineup needs size and grit, so I would safe 2 - 3 million to fix the fourth line and go hard as McGrattan, Colton Orr and add at least two enforcers. Man McDonagh would be a dream for the defense but I just don't see it happening, he sadly loves NY. As for Monster I would re-sign him, the question is does he want to re-sign here? I'm indifferent on Ott he can be a physical force but also go completely unnoticed for long stretches

McPhee is the ideal guy for Burke in Calgary. Basically a yes man, who can build a playoff team just doesn't get them far. With this construction Burke could pull the strings behind the scenes and McPhee would just be a figure head, doing all the talking/signings. As for Oates read a pretty good article in the washington post about him and all I can say is wow, was this guy ever sure of himself. The next GM in Washington has a tough decision to make, do I trade Ovie and start the rebuild or not ? Trotz would be a great coach for the capitals, he knows how to create a defensive system and get blood from a stone. Although I'm not sure if he would like the scrutiny in Washington. TL must be really pissed with this season good for him.

If the Blues are out and it looks like that way I'm going to cheer for the Sharks in the West. McLellan is a great coach and they have a great team but never count out the Kings, if they win game 5 it's game on. Personally speaking I wouldn't have a problem with Boston winning it all, they are a well run original 6 franchise and despite all their talent the definition of a blue collar hockey team. I like their mean style a lot.

Bringing back Kindl and Quincey ? No way this off-season should be about making the team better not worse. If the Penguins is really looking into getting rid of Letang it might be worth a chance. And no, I don't think this current team has another shot at the cup they have to fight tooth and nails to make the playoffs. Holland has to pull off some magic this off-season, so the team can become nasty, bigger and also way better on the defensive side of the game. The cap is going up, buying out Franzen or Weiss adds even more to it so it will be interesting. This series is what it is a good but tough learning curve for the young players.
