Yzerman wins GM of Year (& other awards discussion)

False and false. I hate the Blackhawks with passion but I wouldn't have had a problem if either Keith or Seabrook won it. I've listed a bunch of people that I believe are more deserving because they are complete defenseman. Karlsson maybe does one thing better than everybody else = joining the rush but how often does he get caught and then Methot has to correct his mistakes ? Just look at the him at the start of the season with Methot out, guy didn't even play close to a number 1 defenseman but it seems the reporters are only looking at some stupid numbers, instead of the greater picture these days. It's so funny when people in the media are mentioning but Niedermayer, Lidström were offensive defenseman too...yes they were but they've also played incredible well on the defensive end. I mean, even other forwards admitted how tough it was to play against Niedermayer or even more so against our #5. When I'm thinking of an offensive defender who is also responsible in his own end I'm thinking of guys like Doughty, Duncan Keith and Alex Pietrangelo but for sure not EK. When I'm thinking of players I'd like out there to protect a lead...well that's for sure not Eric Karlsson. When I'm thinking of a fourth forward yes than I'm thinking of EK. Just mix offensive forwards with other forwards or split the Norris trophy it's a shame this trophy has been downgraded to the defender with the most points.

Yzerman wins GM of Year (& other awards discussion)

Personally I think a purely offensive defenseman should be in the same category as some other point producers. That would greatly improve the Norris and actually make sure that guys who shouldn't even be in the conversation for the trophy won't take it away from much more deserving players . Or if that's not possible just split it into the best overall defender and the one with the most points that way everyone knows which award is the more important one for a ..defender. I mean not even nominating Weber, Suter and Keith ? Too bad Giordano for hurt guy would have won otherwise.

Ehrhoff would also be an interesting choice for the right price. But if Franson becomes too expensive Wings should try to trade a few prospects to get a better draft position and go for Werenski. Green was the 3 defenseman on Washington and is very one dimensional let someone else overpay for him there is also his scary injury history .

Yzerman wins GM of Year (& other awards discussion)

I'm so done with that award it's a joke. The job of a defender is to well...defend and not play like another forward. Yes Karlsson is elite in terms of offensive ability but as a defender he is average . Keith, Weber, Suter, Seabrook, Doughty, McDonagh, PietrangeloAre all better at the defensive side of the game and yet only Doughty was nominated what a joke. Price with 4 awards is deserved this goalie had an unreal season, also the Jack Adams for Hartley is great and of course the best for the last award the captain winning GM of the year is just awesome . As far as the community awards just like the masterton everyone is a winner there but extremely happy for Z

    Will Wings Revisit Signing Phaneuf?

Well that's a Brian Burke phrase after some reporters questioned his fourth line over and over again, all that while comparing hockey to other sports. I mean just look at some posts after the Pasha, Z incidents or at how happy people are that hockey is slowly turning into something it shouldn't be and that phrase is simple true. Anyhow, in terms of Phaneuf if the Leafs are eating some money, the interested will go up even if the Wings are out.

So very well deserved he has turned this team around in only 4 years unbelievable job by the Captain

Thanks god I always forget that stupid rule. Personally I think some team will offer sheet him but man of it's Edmonton the two first rounders could be costly for them. Even with McDavid and Nurse in the team they aren't ready for the playoffs action this season in a few years the all be the new Hawks

    Will Wings Revisit Signing Phaneuf?

The best example is how good Phaneuf was when he first entered the league, this guy was heralded as a young Scott Stevens he was that good of an open hitter. I don't need the usual suspects flower power Greenpeace folks to know what I'm expecting from hockey and what I don't expect..sissy hockey, gimmicks such as 7 outdoor games , Rogers instead of Bell, less hitting hip checks, almost non exciting ufa lists...are for sure not things that I associate with hockey neither are showboaters and other questionable grow the game crap. Anyhow Phaneuf will get dealt and I think he benefit tremendously from it...Toronto is just too tough of a market for most athletes especially if one has the burden of the C

    Will Wings Revisit Signing Phaneuf?

I think we can all agree on this finally: hockey in the 90s and pre 2005 was just so much better and more exciting it's not even close. But as long as the stupid BOG doesn't act or finally getting changed to guys like Mr. I, Pegula...we won't see an improvement.

    Salary Cap Raised

Personally I had hopes it would go up higher around $ 74 million, Wings are an original 6 team so it would have helped us longterm either by 1. unloading bad contracts and 2. offer-sheet some guys that are worth it.

    2015 Draft

It's Damian Cox soPersonally I think the Wings should look at the option of trading down for Werensky, big hulking defenseman and in my mind the second best one in the draft after Hanifin. http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/2015/6/22/8825243/zach-werenski-scouting-report-nhl-draft-profile guy is exactly what the doctor ordered Plus he is a local boy so that adds some extra plus

I like it too, he has his own assistance coaches now and also an experienced one in Granato.

I think some team maybe Edmonton will be crazy enough to throw 7x7 at him, at that point I' rather offer sheet Hamilton with 8 x 8 but thats just me.

    OT Changes

I just don't get it, if the NHL(PA) and all others do hate the shootout so much either get rid of it or if for whatever reason they don't want to do that let it be the way it always was and hopefully will always be. This 3:3 is just turning this thing into another gimmick, like we've needed more gimmicks in a our game, which is more and more becoming something it shouldn't be.

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick

Arizona is rebuilding and they are looking to save not to spend money, so I doubt they'd trade for a veteran . Nashville would make sense but I am sure they'd be asking for something in return of they take in that contract maybe Jurco ? Canucks are trying to get younger they are rebuilding this year so yeah

Players who might be available due to teams cap issues

It's an asking price to get negotiations started nothing more or less, nobody will pay that much also keep in mind according to generalfanager the guy has a NTC so the number of teams Bowman can trade him too will be limited and I highly doubt, his prefered destinations would give up that much for him. To bbe honest I'm really worried about an involvment of the Wings...here. Don't get me wrong he is a great player but I would really prefer a defenseman for that package (i.E. try to get into Hanifin, Werenski range on Friday).

    Sean Avery - Transition Season

Obviously these guys aren't paying half their salary in taxes that would be crazy beyond everything. I'm sure most hockeyplayers and athletes in general do have some professional advisers to use every possible loophole in order to pay the smallest possible fee. Also why would players have to pay money to the NHL ? They are employees and employees aren't paying their employer back, the employer is paying them to work for him, her. I think what Avery is saying here, that players should do something, anything after their career is over or at least don't expect to continue flying around in private jets and use the top of the top hotels if the finances aren't there. I mean sure a guy like Lidström can still do it but we are talking about the elite of the elite here...the average NHL player will be lucky to last 15 years and take home ~ 4 million which is a boatload of money but I don't think it will last long if guys aren't responsible with their money.

    2015 Draft

I just don't think associating a 18 old kids with elite guys is doing them any favors. If Larkin turns out to be a Toews lite I would be incredible happy with that. A big local boy who just has the intangibles yep I'd take that . McDavid is probably the most NHL ready player since Crosby same goes for to a lesser extent Eichel..next up would be Strome I think Hanifin needs to work on his defensive game so whichever team drafts him will send him back to juniors. This draft will be the McDavid show mediawise.

    Sean Avery - Transition Season

Yeah my bad should have read it again also thanks for the site already one of my favourite new sites, just great. I mean 7,5 million is still a lot of money. I disagree with a lot of things he does and stands for but I will admit that having a restaurant - even if he isn't the majority owner located on broadway is a success. His advice is a good one but every hockey player is different, some NEED the time off to re-focus on their goals in life, while others might want to join the family business later and a lot of people just want to stay involved, so they become color commentators, analysts or insiders like PJ Stock, Aaron Ward, Jeff O'Neil or McLellan. I think even Tortarella worked for TSN before he was hired by the Rangers. The good thing is there are a lot of post hockey-options for hockey-players but giving up that luxurious life and being treated like a god must for sure be hard, so I think it's great that they are now getting help from the NHLPA and advises from former players (yes that includes Sean Avery).

Players who might be available due to teams cap issues

Chicago is not going to trade Seabrook because that guy is a huge reason why Keith can do what he does all the time, jump in on the offense and score. When I'm thinking of Keith, Seabrook I'm thinking of a marginal lesser top pairing than what Weber/Suter were a few years ago. Hawks will move a lot of players before Seabrook I think after Toews, Kane and Keith he is by far their most valuable player. A few years ago the Wings had the chance to offer-sheet Pietrangelo with a Weberlike contract (before the new CBA) but didn't something I still can't understand till today. Sure Franson will cash in and I can see teams like Dallas, Calgary lining up with trucks of money for his services, maybe even Boychuck like

    2015 Draft

Sure the draft position is just another step and it's not THE step but I think Strome has all the tools to become a very succesful NHLer maybe even a star. He is big, has a good two way game and seems to be dedicated to working hard. Personally I don't care if Larkin would be a 7, 1 or whatever in a draft. The fact of the matter is we got him at 15 and everything else is just speculation. His job now is to work as hard as he can and the Wings job is to bring him along at a realistic pace which means, let him acclimate to the pro game and when he's ready bring him up. Just for the record I would have said the same thing if we got him at #2. Yes I honestly believe he has no chance of becoming another Toews, Pasha or Kopitar otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it. I think it's hard enough to be a young NHL player especially if an original 6 team has drafted you, no need to put further pressure and incredible high expectations on an 18/19 old kid. I would be very happy if Larkin turns into a solid top 6 center with a better than average two way game. I think Toews is an awesome, awesome player and judging by their cup celebrations also a very lucky bastard, sadly he is their version of Yzerman but he could never do it alone, nobody in hockey can and that's the beauty of the game even elite players need others to help them out. That being said I think Stamkos will crush the 10,5 annually cap hit soon, I think 12 per at least maybe even 14 with a 71 million salary caphit.

Bickel makes 4 million per year for the next 4 years and was a healthy scratch..good fourth liner with third line upside but there are much better options available for the fourth line and especially cheaper ones

    2015 Draft

There is a reason why Strome is a top 4 pick and Larkin wasn't . Stop overhauling every prospect. Especially the comparison to Toews. as good as Toews is he also has a lot of help in the form of Keith, Hossa, Sharp , Seabrook and Kane . Larkin will never be another Pasha , Toews or Kopitar that's just through the roof expectations . Whoever gets Strome has a close to NHL ready center in their hands.Larkin will need at least another year in the nhl to get used to the pro game.
