  1.  Awesome article and great inside into what makes Sid the kid, McDavid, Price and Keit such stars.

    https://www.theplayerstribune.com/mark-scheifele-top-5-nhl/

    My highlight is this:

    On Sid the Kid:

"...But even if you’re as smart as Sid, and as physically gifted, there are a million other variables going on. Maybe you’re on a back-to-back on the road. Maybe your coach is on you, or you got into an argument with your girlfriend, and you’re up in your own head. Can you do it every single night, for 82 games, plus the playoffs, for more than 10 years, without ever regressing?

This is what Sidney Crosby has done, and it really is mind-blowing..."

    On the next one, McDavid:

"...I remember the first time I saw Connor skate in person, I was like, O.K., this guy was just born different. He’s genetically superior. He was created in a hockey lab. I mean, he’s taking the same amount of strides as everybody else … he’s wearing the same skates as everybody else … and somehow he’s going twice as fast? There’s not a single NHL team that has figured out how to handle his speed on the rush..."

I always knew Scheifele is an outstanding player but boy does this guy ever understand the game and players around him. Possible future headcoach wow

I am sad this thread still exists figured he would have signed by now in fact said 2.2 for 2 3 days before camp.  Wondering is it him or the birdies(agent, friends etc) showing him his highlight reels saying you are worth waaay more than 2.2.

Time to either sheet or get off the pot.....

The Winged Wheel podcast had a pretty level headed take on the situation and I really agree it's basically a win win situation:

AA signs: Wings have a young third line winger with second line updside

AA walks: capspace plus the Wings are worse thus improving their chances for Dahlin

And that's exactly where I'm at now I don't care anymore because it's really a win win situation

Well Holland was after Suter and Stamkos in their primes when they became available.  He managed to sign Hossa in his prime.  So he has gone after big names in free agency.  As for mismanaged, the Wings missed the playoffs for the first time in 26 years last season.  The Isles haven't been past the 2nd round of the playoffs for 24 years and have been a joke of a franchise for decades.  Not saying Tavares is interested in the Wings, but we're not worse than the Isles in any way.

long story short JT wants a cup, neither team (Wings and Isles) can offer him that.

Why would JT come to Detroit? Because a top 6 of JT, Zetterberg, improved versions of Mantha/Larkin, Nyquist, and Tatar is a very good top 6. And despite what you say about us, we are still the Detroit Red Wings and that means something. Same reason why Babs went to the Leafs and 2 years ago they were a bigger s*** show then us.

The days of tanking for the 1st overall pick are not what they used to be. Didn't Colorado/Philly teach you anything this year?

Of course it means something but like it or not the chance to win a cup means more to players. The guy wants to win a cup not be part of another team that doesn't have any chance at doing so otherwise he could just sign an extension with the Isles.

Every season and team needs something to look forward to and for me that's the chance of drafting Dahlin or at least the guarantee to draft Tkachuk.

It may be true that the RFA market is changing, but it's certainly not drastic. Some players are skipping the typical bridge deal, most still aren't (albeit very often because they don't yet have enough NHL experience when their ELCs expire). But the ironic thing here is doing so would generally be a bad thing for the player, as it would delay their big payday. If there's someone looking to resist that trend in the RFA market, logically it would be AA.

And we're not looking for a discount, per se, just market value (as could be derived from the deals given Donskoi, Lindberg, Faska, Hyman, Dzingel, Andrighetto, Nemestnikov, Rieder, Baertschi, Borwn and probably a few I missed). You could say that all RFAs are a bit of a discount relative to UFAs, or you could go the other way and say UFAs cost more (without being "worth" more) because you have to pay a premium in order to acquire them.

It might be true that we would have already made a better offer if we had more cap space, but the fact that we don't have the space to offer what we're already offering and could in fact already offer more based on the logical move we would already have to make suggests otherwise.

I'm guessing they'll end up settling somewhere in the $2.1-2.3 range.

Of course he isn't in the McDavid etc. situation only %o of NHL players is and I also think you are right they'll settle somewhere in the low to mid 2 mill range which is still a very tradable contraact if the relationship is damaged so in either case both sides would win.

Not ideal, but yes, I'd rather see that.

No thanks I'd rather see 2 guys who are both reliable on the defensive side of the game, so at least try Danny D and Daley. Also come trade dead line  Green will be gone  so I'd rather use him on the PP to boost his points and maximize the return for him.

Also it's funny how hung up people are over a GMs and coaches contract extension, when all it means is basically gifted money if they get fired. Best example of this is Winnipeg, does anyone really believe Cheveldayoff and Maurice will be there next year if Winnipeg misses the playoffs again? I for sure don't and a few million here and there are like pocketmoney for the Illitches and Thomsons' of the world BUT it makes the organization look good in the eyes of future GM and coach candidates because they know even if they get fired they'd get a nice goodbye present.

    RFA deals =/= UFA deals

Maybe it's breaking news to some but the RFA market is changing and it's changing drastically. Í just refuse to believe that the Wings wouldn't offer a better contract if they had the capspace to do so maybe I'm wrong and it's still the old way of expecting some sort of discounts in order to have the honor to wear the winged wheel. But AA is not in the wrong here he thinks he is worth a bit more and if he gets it good for him. Connor Brown whom I'm a huge fan of is making 2,1 million per year maybe if the relationship is sour the Wings could trade AA for him.

  8. Nothing against Pierre it's knowledge is unbelievable but this is the same clickbait as the Detroit and Stamkos  article. Why would JT want to come here? Whenever the rebuild starts it willtake years of good drafting and some luck to build towards something that hopefully 1 day can win a cup(s)! again.

JT will be 27 years old and should have another decade of hockey left in him given how he serious and hard he works. If I were him I'd be looking at Nashville (great city, great team and absolutely no media pressure), St. Louis or Tampa...imagine Stamkos, Tavares on the same team they'd basically have a 1a and 1b line depending on the specific needs of the game.

What the Wings need to do is simple: hopefully finish last but damn Vegas, Vancouver and Newjersey will be tough to beat...in order to secure a top 4 pick which could be Brady Tkachuk a center with good size and some mean streak going on is exactly what the Wings could need...given that they don't win the Dahlin lottery. I don't care if it means that some (overhyped) young players would need to have a bad year for that because neither of them will be the difference between winning or losing a cup in the future with maybe Larkin and Mantha as the exception.

At the end of the day its a business, and AA having no leverage is just what comes with not being arbitration eligible. Ferris can demand whatever he wants, but Holland has all the leverage here. Sure AA can leave eventually when he becomes a UFA, but if Holland wants to trade him at some point (which I think he does) you want that contract as team friendly as possible to maximize your return. If you are a player like McDavid, then sure the player has leverage because the fear of losing a player like that would be devastating but when you are a 3rd liner with one season under your belt, its advantage team.

Also I dont think 1.9 is low-balling, it may be a bit less then he is worth, but I believe comparable contracts are around the 2.1 - 2-3 range.  Low-balling would be if Holland offered 1.1mil.

You very right, AA has no leverage but this can also set a bad precedent for Mantha and Larkin (whom I'd argue are the 2 most talented current young Wings on the team by far) they also have no leverage so does that mean they should take a low ball offer? Well a team can "force" them to do it and then face the consequences, players wanting out or signing for much much more when the leverage situation takes a turn.

I know a lot of Wings fans are high on AA but the difference between 1,9 and let's say 2,3 doesn't really decrease/increase his value outside from his speed he is your everyday young, talented but somewhat rough winger every team seems to have and their trade value isn't as high compared to centers and defenders.

But hey I really don't care that much either way it just urks me that everyone saw this situation coming and yet the highly paid Wings front-office stuff didn't. Yeah it's a business first but more often than not the it's a business thing only comes up when the team has the leverage when it comes down to a player signing an extension, the word "team friendly" is coming up more often than not. To be honest I'm surprised AA hasn't signed in Russia  yet, he could make 3 mill no taxes, play for the Russian cup and in the Olympics

I don't think this has anything to do with the cap situation, I think it's about not creating a precedent in regards to RFA's. We only have around $966,000 to spend and Holland has offered AA I believe 1-9-2.1mil meaning he obviously will make a move once he gets AA signed.

I see where you are coming from with the first sentence, but what makes you put him at 2.25-3mil? I am not even arguing you, just wondering what your comparable's are.

Well the thing is this old model of thinking is not going to fly. At some point the team has go figure out who the new core is and pay them to keep them. If I were Ferris I'd tell the Wings you knew the situation before but let's meet in the middle your offer is 1,9 we want 3 how about 2,4 and be done with it, else trade my client.

Just to be clear, I'm not commenting on whether AA is worth it or not I'm just totally surprised by the lack of longterm thinking. I'm not even sure if AA is part of the core but low balling a young talented player is a game the Wings in their current state can't afford to play and if they do at least get something back for the guy.

Enough of this AA drama, just go play in Russia already. AA will bolt in 2 years anyway, IF Blashill is still the head coach which I am sure he will be and Ken Holland will  still be here as well I am sure.

Honestly it would be the best decision for him. Can't believe the Wings thought they could still offset cap problems by low balling young players like this.

just trade the guy because there is no way he stays after all of this.

I can't imagine them taking attention away from the team and building to retire Fedorov's number on opening night. Maybe next year.

I think they'll focus on the new experience in the new building instead of taking attention away from the team

Why step down though? You have a young star in Matthews, a very good young team on the verge of breaking out. And why would they not want to renew the guy in charge when the team is heading upwards? It doesn't make any sense. Both sides are benefiting greatly right now. It seams like a no brainer that he gets renewed.

Even if Chris does extend Ken he can still be fired they just would have to pay him for the duration of the contract.

I think the next GM in Toronto is going to be that young genius kid Dubas, he is learning at every position from top guys be it coaching, GM, draft or even the governor.

Off mlive.com this morning the odds of the cup being raised by a team. We are deeeead last with the other bottom feeders. Think at 100 to 1 50 bucks down would be worth the payoff...LOL

Looking at it positively it means the Wings only have 1 other team to beat in order to get the best odds at the first overall

  15. Mr. I wanted Steve as the GM period. There is no indication if he was on board with a rebuild or not also fact.

The video is telling the truth in a funny and entertaining way whether some people like it or not.

Thankfully for the Wings the next draft should be better and they alongside Vegas should have the best odds at the first overall pick.

Also if people wouldn't bring up the lame excuse of missing the playoffs for the first time there wouldn't be a need to remind them of what was sacrificed for that.

Most likely. This franchise was legitimately on top for about 20 years which in completely unheard of. Since things started to go downhill, have some questionable/bad moves been made? 100%, there is no denying that. But no management team in sports can keep a team on top forever given the cyclical nature of sports. Had Yzerman taken over and this team went downhill, fans would be screaming at the captain, and wanting Holland back.

Whoever was steering the ship during the decline was going to get s*** on.

As far as this video goes, I'm not going to say that there are zero relevant points, but you guys can't be serious when you say its well done. For me, his tone is way too over the top.

Things were clear after the team got destroyed by Nashville and when Lidstrom retired

Sure some elements of the video like the voice were funny but all the points are true. Stevie took over Tampa and told everyone what to expect, the Wings didn't accept reality that's all true.

  17. AA basically has 1 asset which is tremendous speed and he is still young enough to maybe witness a deep run in the distant future but the guy doesn't seem to have any defensive abilities so he will never be a reliable 2 way player.

Saying he is already better than Nyquist is wrong Nyquist to me is the most dangerous pure goal scorer on the team right now but the league has long adjusted to him so it's much harder to do  it regular.

The NHL teams also planned for Larkin and he has yet to figure out how to adjust his game, the same is going to happen with AA stopping him is not that difficult keep the guy on the outside and force him to shoot his release is not that good.

With that being said this whole saga just proves that the Wings are having the wrong priorities. Can't or don't want to sign him fine the trade the guy and get a pick or else sign him. The days of young guys signing low ball offers are over maybe the Wings front office needs to learn that the hard way.
