Personally I find what Varlamov is accused of to be even more reprehensible than vehicular manslaughter. Someone who commits manslaughter had no intention of harming anyone, generally its a death as the result of an accident. If Varlamov did the things he is accused of, its not an accident but a willful act intended to hurt a woman. There are 2 sides to every story though and he has the right to defend himself so I'll wait until all the facts are out before casting any judgement on him.

Smith will get back in but right now Lashoff is actually playing surprisingly well and Smith was off to a rough start. Hopefully this motivates him to be better when he gets back in the line-up. There is also the possibility that he's one of the guys potentially moved out to clear cap and roster space.

FIghting has never been part of hockey. Fighting happens in hockey (and will continue too long after its banned) but its not part of the game. The OHL has already started working towards punishing fights with game misconducts and the rest of the CHL won't be far behind. The substance abuse in most of the NHL's suicides has been prescription pain killers taken due to the strain on the body fighting every night causes. I took this from another board but basketball went through the same phase in the 70's. The league will absolutely work to reduce fighting to the absolute minimum levels and the game will be better because of it.

Saying those of us who have no problem with game misconducts for fighting should go watch soccer is no different than us saying you should go watch MMA or boxing if you want to watch fights. What you see as destroying the game will in all likelihood increase the number of viewers and the number of kids playing hockey. Very few fans will actually stop watching hockey when fighting is removed from the game, many say they will, but many also said they'd stop watching over the lockouts yet almost all of them came back. What you see as "dumbing down" the sport is actually putting the focus back on hockey and drastically improving the product on the ice. If we can get rid of the Colton Orr's of the league and replace them with guys who actually play hockey then the product has been improved considerably. If the players got to decide everything about how the game worked, they'd still be playing helmetless...sometimes decisions have to be made on their behalf. Its not a matter of if fighting will be removed from the game its a matter of when. If you really like fighting more than the game itself then you better get your fill in the next few years because like it or not its going to be gone sooner rather than later.

I'd be ecstatic if the Wings even made the finals!! For Playoff Series we can easily split the games between all of us who want to do them. I don't plan on doing a ton of them this year, I'll just fill in for Hockeytown when I can and there might be a game or 2 that I ask for if I have a really good idea in mind.

So are you arguing that unless we can get rid of ALL risk in the game, we shouldn't try to remove ANY risks at all? In those instances a fight would still happen, just when it was over McCarty would get a game misconduct. The fights that most people use to justify keeping it in the game would still happen. The game misconducts would get rid of enforcers though, who don't play more than 5 minutes a night and only fight other enforcers. With the settlement that just happened in the NFL its inevitable that fighting will eventually be banned in Hockey. It doesn't matter how the players feel about it, if its going to cost the league hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars in settlements/legal judgements, the league will just make the decision for them. As many have tried to explain earlier, fighting is NOT part of the game, that would be like arguing slashing, cross checking or hitting from behind is part of the game.

According to Brendan Savage he accepted a deal at the exact same terms he rejected from the Wings in order to test the FA market. I guess his decision was based on ice-time and opportunity to play in the top 6. I don't think he was going to get that opportunity under Babcock, and especially not after adding Alfredsson to the line-up. I hope he does well in NJ...just not against the Wings.

To each their own I guess. I'd rather watch Eddie Olczyk than Tim and Sid, and I'd watch Jay Onrait read the phone book.

Actually from 1994 to 1997 Jim Devellano and Bowman were co GM's. Ken was the assistant GM and took over as GM in July 1998. Bowman hasn't run the show anywhere in over a decade. Do you really believe he's running the Blackhawks from his home in Buffalo? Even in his last years in Detroit he was a consultant to their coaching staff. He was far from a managing force for the team.

He's not currently a GM but he was one several times during his career including just before Holland took over for the Wings. He was the GM who had worked out a trade including Yzerman going to Ottawa for Alexei Yashin before getting shut down by either the rest of management or by Illitch himself.

Best coach ever, but terrible GM. I'd take Holland over Scotty as GM anyday.

Who knows if they will reach their respective ceilings but both have the potential to be that good or better. They were both defenceman of the year in their junior leagues, with Sproul taking the honor of CHL defenceman of the year on top of the OHL prize. I wouldn't trade either for Cody Franson straight up.

Streit was willing to make a deal before Free Agency....as evidenced by him actually doing so. Flip told the Wings and all potential suitors that he was not willing to sign any deals until free agency started. Teams are only going to give up a pick if they are given at least a short period of exclusive bargaining. Flip actually prevented us from getting anything in return for his rights.
